School of Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper identifies benefits and challenges of computer-mediated collaborative writing for L2 learners and provides some useful guidelines for L2 instructors and instructional designers. Many studies found that collaborative writing using CMC technologies improved L2 students’ writing skills and had a positive impact on their motivation, based both on the technologies themselves and the social interactions such tools facilitated. However, not all studies found positive effects on students’ performance. Some of the negative effects found were technological limitations and interpersonal issues inherent in collaborative learning, which demands constant interaction between people with diverse backgrounds and characteristics. More attention should be …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Today’s intelligent software systems, such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning systems, are sophisticated, complicated, sometimes complex systems. In order to effectively interact with these systems, novice users need to have a certain level of understanding. An awareness of a system’s underlying principles, rationale, logic, and goals can enhance the synergistic human-machine interaction. It also benefits the user to know when they can trust the systems’ output, and to discern boundary conditions that might change the output. The purpose of this research is to empirically test the viability of a Cognitive Tutorial approach, called Explicit Rule Learning. Several approaches have been used …

[First Paragraph] We live in a global society in which we are constantly exposed to new technologies, people, and situations that transform our perceptions and worldviews. As we are exposed to these new experiences, it is increasingly necessary to maintain a critical eye and question what we are seeing. It is not enough for higher education merely to teach material; instructors should also teach the responsibilities and ethics that coincide with it. Encouraging criticality in higher education helps learners to develop a deeper understanding of social justice, inequality, and oppressive systems, and it teaches learners how to combat those issues …
