We live in a culture dominated by boundaries of all sorts. Personal space is precious to us, and we become uneasy when others do not honor those invisible borders, ignoring, perhaps, the ways in which those borders shift with age, class, gender, and ethnicity. We have office doors, house doors, and bedroom doors that we close and lock. Many of us demarcate a sharp separation between private life and public work, arguing, as does Michael Bèrubé that the life lived has nothing to do with the work written. Reading aloud to children has always been a part of classroom instruction, but it has been neglected in recent years because of time constraints in the classroom due to the requirement for accountability, competency testing, and other demands on time. The media, however, point out that reading aloud to children as young as one year of age will increase vocabulary, improve listening skills, and enhance ability to comprehend. It would appear that many parents and teachers hear the message but do not take this advice seriously.

This article presents a theoretical framework for conceptualizing power relations in educational settings and argues that research on the metamorphic effects of social power provides an empirical basis for the constructive use of power in the college classroom. It recommends that teachers should concentrate on strengthening their informational, expert, and referent power bases; limit their use of legitimate and reward power; and avoid the exercise of coercive power at practically any cost.

Preservice Teachers’ Use Of Curriculum-Based Measurement In An Informal Assessment Based Reading Clinic, Tina M. Schroeder

This study investigated 13 preservice regular education reading teachers' use of curriculum-based measurement (CBM) data under specified conditions. Conditions included: (a) providing preservice teachers with 75 minutes of training in the use of CBM in reading, (b) biweekly CBM administration and graphing during a 10-week practicum experience, and (c) concomitant use of other reading measures [e. g., Reading Miscue Inventory (RMI), Running Records (RR)]. Exit interviews indicated that preservice teachers made use of CBM data in some, but not all, of the important ways suggested in the research literature. Preservice teachers provided the following positive ratings of CBM: (a) CBM …

This study's original goal was to present data about teaching that would facilitate reflection on how all of us can become better teachers, especially teaching after the first year of law school. However, during the process of data analysis, the overall conclusion became broader and far different from what was initially contemplated. In the author's opinion, this professor's teaching is best understood as an attempt to address the effects of stress in law school. The present study examined the effects of the use of humor and/or profanity on students’ perception of a male or female Psychology instructor. Groups of subjects (N=389; 203=females, 186=males) in a classroom viewed a taped lecture and then completed a questionnaire assessing the instructor and lecture. Each subject viewed one of eight video-taped lecture conditions: (1) non-humorous, non-profane male, (2) non-humorous, profane male, (3) humorous, non-profane male, (4) humorous, profane male, (5) non-humorous, profane female, (6) non-humorous, profane female, (7) humorous, non-profane female or (8) humorous, profane female. Functional assessment of aggressive, aberrant, and challenging behavior has dominated the literature with relatively little attention given to the potential utility of functional assessment in academics. The purpose of this article is to advocate functional strategy assessment as a procedure for acquiring data to support the formulation of intervention hypotheses by school-based personnel with the aim of improving the academic performance of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. A functional strategy assessment model is presented, and two case illustrations are employed to demonstrate the feasibility of this assessment model for use by practitioners.
