This paper is a review of the research available on manipulative use in the mathematics classroom. Mathematical manipulatives, objects that are used to aid a student in learning a mathematical concept, provide a way for students to learn abstract mathematical concepts in a non lecture situation through hands-on learning and discovery. It specifically focuses on the use of manipulatives in the secondary Algebra classroom and how they can be integrated into a traditional curriculum. Problem
The problem investigated in this study is how the oikoscode (Haustafeln), a pattern of ethical education replicated by earliest Christianity, can be developed into a theoretical model. The oikoscode is the lifestyle pattern, the lifecode of attitudinal framing and behavioral conduct that guided earliest Christianity, the generation of the first 25 years after the resurrection of Jesus.

Mathematics learning and teaching are optimized in classrooms when reform-oriented culture (ROC) is present. This report presents a case study that illustrates how ROC manifested and influenced mathematical Discourses in one sixth-grade classroom. The data was drawn from a study that addressed the question: How do classroom interactions influence mathematical Discourses? The study used interpretive methodology for analysis. One finding was that classroom boundary interactions either enhanced or hindered mathematical Discourses dependent upon sociocultural context alignments. An implication of this research is when “effective” learning and/or teaching strategies are identified, “effective” implementation may require paying close attention to sociocultural context …

Educational practices are improved because of brain research. Cognitive and behavior sciences have provided important concepts for educational practice. Within recent decades, neuroscience has also contributed to the field of brain research, thus enhancing our understanding oflearning. Three main concepts from neuroscience are explored: synaptogenesis, critical periods, and enriched environments. When the entire body of knowledge from all disciplines of brain research is viewed together, then fmdings can be applied to educational practices.

This qualitative study was designed to examine teacher feedback concerning the application of multiple intelligence methods in their classroom. The study found the theory of multiple intelligences was being implemented throughout the curriculum and students were maintaining an evident level of engagement; in turn teachers found it to be a useful intructional method.

Student interactions are important which provokes the idea that cooperative learning should be incorporated into classrooms. Research states many benefits for incorporating cooperative learning and are included in the literature review. Cooperative groups were introduced and studied by the author, who ultimately concluded that cooperative learning does have a place in Mathematics classrooms and should be used when the lesson lends itself to a cooperative environment. PBL is described as small-group collaborative learning; however, literature on how collaboration is enacted in PBL contexts is limited. A two-year ethnographic study examined the experiences and responses of Asian students to the obligations of PBL in a Western context. Participant-observation, videotape data, and video-stimulated recall interviews provided insights into collaborative behaviors in PBL classrooms. Even though students recognized that listening and speaking were important to collaboration, speaking was clearly privileged over listening in this PBL setting. A framework was developed that incorporated both collaborative and noncollaborative listening and speaking behaviors. This Collaborative Listening/Speaking (CLS) framework provides a structure for …

This study focuses on two prospective teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) who were enrolled in a master's program and were being tutored as they prepared to write a scholarly review of literature. The methodology involved videotaping four tutoring sessions, each tutor was assigned to participate in two tutoring sessions each with the same participant. The videotaped data was then transcribed and analyzed for significant scaffolding occurrences that may have promoted successful transfer of responsibility facilitating autonomy for the learner. Wireless technology has advanced significantly in recent years and has shown great potential and promise for use in education. To better understand the use of wireless technology in education, this research adopted a grounded theory approach to explore how students use wireless technology to support and facilitate their learning. We collected data by interviewing students regarding their experience and opinions of using wireless technology for education. The data were analyzed following the procedures of grounded theory: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. An Extension Of The Reinforcement Contiguity Issue – The Effect Of Retention In The Goal Box After Reinforcement, Marilyn L. Grey

This study investigated one prediction of Guthrie's theory of learning (1936, 1952)--that retention in the goal box after reinforcement increases the likelihood of incompatible responses to the goal stimuli and, thus, decreases learning. Three measures of learning were used: number of trials to criterion, total number of correct trials in the first twenty trials, and number of subjects who met criterion of five successive correct responses within forty trials.
