This study explored associations between acting school principals’ perceptions of state mandated professional development in preparation of TESS evaluations in the field. The study sample included 20 practicing principals that had completed TESS training. Personal interviews were used to draw conclusions and make recommendations to the Arkansas Department of Education on ways to make TESS professional development and preparations more applicable to practicing principals. Prior research indicated that most principals desired more in depth professional development. This study explored female refugees’ perceptions and life experiences at the Za’atari Camp in Jordan. While the study explored challenges and difficulties refugee women have endured while living in the camp, emphasis was placed on how they faced these challenges, coping mechanisms used for overcoming and enduring such circumstances, and what new life roles they had to assume. Utilizing Schweitzer, Greenslade, and Kagee’s (2007) model, this study explored, through qualitative phenomenological methods, the tenacity, resilience, and strength that empowered refugee women throughout their experiences in the camp. Legislators in Arkansas have proposed a bill to increase educational choice through an Education Savings Account (ESA) program available to every child across the state. While many studies on the financial impact of existing ESA, voucher, and scholarship programs in the United States have found overall benefits to the state and individual districts, it may not be the case for a universally-accessible ESA since most existing programs are targeted to students based on need. Who Is More Free? A Comparison Of The Decision-Making Of Private And Public School Principals, M. Danish Shakeel, Corey A. Deangelis

While an abundance of school choice literature focuses on student achievement outcomes, little has been done to determine the mechanisms involved in producing such outcomes. We present a comparative analysis of private and public school principals using data from the School and Staffing Survey (SASS) 2011-2012. We add to the literature by examining the differences in private and public school principals’ abilities to influence important decisions at their schools. We conclude that private schooling may have a systematic advantage over public schooling since private school leadership exhibits more autonomy in influencing relevant decisions.

“Science Is Not My Thing”: Exploring Deaf Non-Science Majors’ Science Identities, Cara L. Gormally, Amber Marchut

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing are underrepresented in science majors, yet we know little about why. Students from other underrepresented groups in science—women and people of color—tend to highly value altruistic or communal career goals, while perceiving science as uncommunal. Research suggests that holding stereotypical conceptions about scientists and perceptions of science as uncommunal may strongly hinder recruitment into science majors. This study sought to explore the science identities of students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing signers. Private Schooling Promotes Political And Economic Freedom? An International Fixed Effects Instrumental Variables Analysis, Corey A. Deangelis, M. Danish Shakeel

Additional private schooling within a nation-state may increase citizens’ political and economic freedom through increased educational quality, balanced power relationships, and increased civic engagement. We employ a two-stage-least-squares time and country-level fixed-effects analytical technique to examine how private schooling could affect political rights, civil liberties and economic freedom indices. We also use a new instrumental variable, short-run fluctuations in the demand for schooling, to predict private schooling. We examine 174 different nations across the globe from 1999 to 2014, and find significant evidence to suggest that private schooling leads to enhanced political and economic freedom. Professional Development Schools (PDSs) provide teachers with multiple new opportunities for leadership. As teachers are encouraged to assume new roles outside of the classroom and beyond the school, it is important to examine the concept of teacher leadership in practice--specifically, how it is perceived by those most closely associated with it. This study identifies a shared understanding of teacher leadership from collaborating teachers, using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design in PDSs within a large, diverse southern New Jersey school district-university partnership. Head Start Preschool Parent-Teacher Engagement And The Parent’S Transition To Kindergarten, Nicole Gagnon – Arsenault

This mixed-method study seeks to better understand the relationships that Head Start preschool teachers have with parents and how those relationships impact a parent’s transition to a public school when their child enters kindergarten. Findings revealed that parents have a deep connection to their child’s Head Start teacher, feel informed and empowered to advocate for their child’s needs. Interviews revealed that parents do not feel as connected to their child’s education in the public school. Recommendations for educators include creating more opportunities for parents to connect to the public school during the supportive Head Start school year.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to better understand how FBA information could support students who were currently unsuccessful with their existing check in/check out intervention. Teachers were interviewed to both better understand their perceptions of the existing check in/check out system and query their thoughts on the altered intervention. This study further explored the effect(s) that information, obtained from a brief functional behavioral assessment had when incorporated into an existing tier two behavior intervention system. Students’ standardized test scores and frequency of office discipline referrals were also evaluated.

This mixed-methods study examined the impact of barriers on student achievement and how promising practices can overcome barriers and increase success. Results found that barriers impact success greatly, however, promising practices can help to overcome them. Significant findings included insights into the proficiency-based educational model, uncontrollable circumstances, and opportunities for students to provide evidence of learning in nontraditional ways. Recommendations consist of increasing paraprofessional training, bringing a bigger system of LCSW support, showing how to co-teach, and finding ways for inclusion to be solidly effective.

This study explores family perceptions of a kindergarten transition program guide. The purpose of this study was to gain information pertaining to language and literacy skills for pre-kindergarten students and how educators support the acquisition of such skills. Educators shared their strategies and perceptions in regards to teaching these skills to all students. The students, ages four and five, participated in task completion activities that showcased the language and literacy skills each possessed. The data revealed that effective teaching strategies assist in yielding high success rates for students at school. For students who demonstrated below proficient abilities, educators determined next steps to best support them individually.

The purpose of this study was to implement digital portfolios using Seesaw (Student Driven Digital Portfolios) to explore its possible effect(s) on home-to-school communication and facilitate the use of technology in a classroom setting. Previous educational research had clearly established that parent-teacher communication can be beneficial and technology’s continuous evolution can spur change to more traditional practices of home-to-school communication. Multiple interventions to the digital portfolio were conducted during this action research project and pre/post questionnaires were used to gather participant perceptions of school-to-home communication in a rural Maine middle school.

This research explored several types of instructional coaches currently used in school districts throughout Maine. More specifically, this research examined how those positions are funded and whether those positions can be maintained as an embedded form of professional development for all teachers. Findings indicated that there are multiple avenues that can be used to fund instructional coaches for school districts, however, whether all of these forms of funding can be sustained for districts to cover the operating costs in future years remained unclear.

The purpose of this study was to assess principals’ and faculty senate chairs’ perceptions of the effectiveness of WV BOE Policy 5000: Procedures for Designated Hiring and Transfer of School Personnel, in improving teacher hiring practices in West Virginia schools. Policy 5000 was enacted on September 16, 2013; therefore, West Virginia’s schools were required by state policy to include a configuration of faculty senate committees in the hiring process, if the faculty senate voted to participate. Statistics on the number of students who leave high school underprepared for postsecondary education, and have to take remedial coursework upon entrance to college vary, but, unfortunately, for at least the last 10 years, these statistics have remained high. This study examined the effectiveness of one transitional high school math curriculum called Essentials for College Math and its impact on 887 students in the state of North Carolina for the 2014-2015 academic year.
