School choice is a long-standing tradition in the United States. New to the options available to K-12 parents are full-time virtual schools, and this option is an even more recent development for Grades K-6 parents. Very little research exists on why parents are choosing full-time virtual education for their school-aged children, and almost no research exists on why parents of younger children (Grades K-6) are choosing this option. Over one year in planning, the inaugural issue of the Journal of Organizational and Educational Leadership (JOEL) is now live. Reflecting on Machiavelli’s prescient words, we launch with equal measure confidence and humility. Any one who has ever led the development of a new product or program knows full well the pitfalls of disrupting the status quo even when people have demanded change. And frankly, it is not as though the world has been clamoring for yet another professional journal. Fear of failure, then, promises to keep us humble.

Colleges and Universities in Arkansas are concerned about retention and graduation rates due to an interest in improving degree attainment. Over half of students entering higher education in Arkansas require remedial coursework, and mathematics is the subject area most commonly needing remediation. Arkansas Colleges and Universities perform below the national average in first to second year retention rates, and the problem is greatest at the two-year college level. This study focused on students at a two-year college in Arkansas who attempted a developmental mathematics course during the fall 2013 semester. A recent dispute from Columbus, Ohio, that made some national headlines dramatically illustrates what can happen to teachers who fail to preview materials and consequently show inappropriate films or use other media unsuited for student instruction.

The outcome of that case was more dramatic and unusual than in similar cases. Even so, this incident demonstrates that educators in K–12 schools can lose their jobs if they fail to use their discretion and comply with board policies in selecting appropriate materials and subjects for their classes and previewing materials before using them in instructional settings.

In recent years, Hungary has been frequently criticized about press freedom issues by organizations including Human Rights Watch, Freedom House and others. The current context of K-12 education emphasizes a strong focus on standardized test results to inform school improvement planning. Concerns about this phenomena center around the methodology used to determine actions intended to improve student achievement. Some educational experts suggest many schools rely solely on test results to develop school improvement plans (SIPs). Subsequently, solutions often address symptoms rather than foundational issues. For this reason, one educator shares her journey through the mediated intersections of media, culture, and education. The reform efforts of the late 20th century and early 21st century have involved legislative acts to improve accountability for student performance. This study was conducted to analyze the relationship that exists between student perceptions of learning and the role of instructors in an integrated World History I and World Literature I course. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) brought high-stakes accountability testing into every American public school with the goal of 100 percent proficiency for all students. Making annual yearly progress (AYP) toward this proficiency goal for the total student population as well as at-risk subgroups was required in order for schools to avoid possible sanctions, such as school restructuring. In implementing NCLB, states had flexibility to determine the minimum size of these subgroups as to provide statistical reliability and accountability for as many schools as possible. This non-experimental, correlational, explanatory, cross-sectional study using quantitative methods sought to determine which combination of 20 out-of-school community demographic factors, while controlling for two school level variables, predicted and accounted for the most variance in New Jersey schools’ percentages of students scoring Proficient or above on the 2010 NJ ASK Language Arts Literacy in sixth and seventh grades. This study focused on both community variables and school level variables to determine whether the current federal and state evaluation policies in place for schools and school personnel that utilize student outcomes on high-stakes standardized assessments are reasonable. This cross-sectional, correlational, explanatory study sought to explain the influence of student mobility on the total percentage of students who scored Proficient or Advanced Proficient (TPAP) on the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) on both Grade 5 Language Arts Literacy and Mathematics in 2010-2011. The analysis included simultaneous and hierarchical regression models for student, school, and faculty variables. All data explored in this study pertained to 696 public elementary schools in New Jersey during the 2010-2011 academic year. The results of this study revealed that student mobility had no statistically significant influence on proficiency levels on …

This capstone paper explores the issue of social integration between international and U.S. national students and focuses on the international student community of the Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS), a non-profit that supports students at the University of Washington-Seattle (UW). A survey was administered to 106 UW students involved in FIUTS to test the hypothesis that the FIUTS community desired to have more U.S. nationals involved in the program. Educators across the nation have seen an increase in diversity in their classrooms, which challenges them to be more aware of the need for cultural intelligence in working with their students. Demographic data indicate that the Latino student population is the fastest growing minority group nationally. The growing Latino population has also been noted in states where that population has historically been low. In Arkansas, a nontraditional destination state for Latino immigrants, that population increased by 114% from 2000 to 2010.
