The Effects Of Evidence-Based Practice In Undergraduate Athletic Training Education, Dennis Allan Perkey

This dissertation examined the incorporation of evidence-based practice into undergraduate athletic training education and its effects on the Board of Certification Examination scores for first-time candidates. A secondary purpose examined various demographic factors and their relation to the Board of Certification Examination. One hundred twenty-four program directors completed the questionnaire that assessed the amount of exposure to evidence-based practice undergraduate athletic training students have obtained in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings. The results found that evidence-based practice was broadly used in all three of the educational settings, and no statistical significance was found to support that more exposure to …

Examining Leadership As Public Pedagogy For Social Justice, Patrick M. Jenlink, Karen Embry-Jenlink

The authors’ purpose in this study was to report on research that examined the meaning of leadership as a public pedagogy of socially just practice. Drawing on practitioners’ voices, the authors’ focused on what social justice means in the world of schools, what socially just practice is from a practitioner’s perspective, and the role that educational leaders play in connecting social justice and democracy in the educational setting. The authors engaged in an analysis of the narrative discourse related to social justice practices of practicing school leaders. This past summer, the University of Dayton offered its first study abroad course for graduate students in the Department of Counselor Education and Human Services (EDC). Eight school psychology graduate students, three students from other EDC programs, and two faculty members spent two weeks in Buenos Aires, Argentina learning about their educational system and experiencing firsthand what it feels like to be immersed in another culture.

Principals and teacher leaders are expected to provide many learning opportunities for the colleagues with which they work and for the students they teach. The model employed to empower teachers to grow in the education profession and improve collaboration among colleagues and facilitate collegial conversation is the Professional Learning Community (PLC). The PLC model is exercised in many schools throughout the United States. As schools employee the PLC model, levels of leadership change, and teachers may or may not grow professionally. Though schools attempt to implement positive change, the sustainability of professional development can be in jeopardy.

Educators are focused with efforts to improve student achievement through reform and policies; a majority of the efforts are focused on accountability reform. The learner-centered model focuses on school reform that is organized around the personal domain for systemic reform. How principals work with students is greatly influenced by policy and what they believe about student learning and behavior. This dissertation attempted to establish principal beliefs and their effectiveness on student achievement on the End-of-Grade and End-of-Course test in the state North Carolina.

A small public school system in the piedmont of North Carolina was the setting for this study. Individual school data, as well as aggregated data from studied schools were analyzed in order to form overall conclusions of perceptions of leadership within the district. Schools were grouped according to the age of the student (elementary K-5, secondary 6-12) in an effort to provide the opportunity for further data analyses.

This dissertation examined the Beginning Teacher Induction Program of a rural school system in North Carolina. The effects of mentoring, induction sessions, administrative support, ongoing staff development, and other support offered at the system level to beginning teachers were carefully analyzed.

This dissertation was designed to explore the transition of a group of ninth-grade students into a large rural upstate South Carolina high school. The primary focus was to ascertain the students' levels of academic intrinsic motivation toward English, math, science, history, and their general orientation toward school learning, and to explore those freshman academy experiences that the students felt most directly impacted these attributes. The freshman academy at this school was implemented in 2006 as a district initiative to strengthen the transition to high school and ultimately increase the graduation rate.

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to examine the lived experiences of students attending a predominately Latino urban high school in the southwest region of the United States, using interviews, focus groups, and observations to gain an insight on student engagement and disengagement from school. Riverview High School was selected as the prime site for exploring student engagement based mainly on the poor student population of color, low school retention rate, and high suspension rate. This paper presents some of the benefits of using learning contracts by some in the USA who have used them for many years, and others in Italy who had never used them, but were beginning to experiment with using them. This project focuses on how we are not preparing students to step into much-needed leadership roles. Leadership, when it is taught at all, is typically taught in a traditional and linear way – as a set of skills, a particular role to be filled, or as a hierarchy of one person above others. This type of leadership is not effective in solving today's problems. First, it is fragmented and specialized while the world's problems are complex and interconnected. This is a proposal for a community/university partnership which would integrate education and activism, "Sustainable Activism" into the PSU sustainability curriculum. This collaboration would provide students and community members with the opportunity to share expertise and resources in addressing the dangerous transportation and storage of nuclear wastes in our bio-region. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore principals' perspectives on how they make sense of their leadership roles in a new pay-for-performance system. The study describes the perceptions of six principals, two each from elementary, middle, and high school levels, regarding leadership in a recently changed system. Principals were asked about their leadership roles in implementing a pay-for-performance system, and responses focused on leadership styles, actions, beliefs, preparation, and experience of leading in a time of change. The purpose of this study is to evaluate leadership styles of respiratory managers in the hospital environment, through examination of B.M. Bass's (1995) model of transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership. The author measured leadership alignment and outcome factors through the multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ 5x-short) survey. Respiratory managers are a large part of the healthcare team. They provide the respiratory therapist they manage with education, orientation and supervision. The respiratory managers of 200 Magnet recognized hospitals located within the United States were mailed a MLQ 5x-short survey. Each manager was asked to fill out the survey and return it in …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The aim of this paper is to explore students’ positive experiences of their learning through the use of visual narratives, observation, and field notes in two secondary school classes in Sweden. Four themes were found: (1) knowing the needs of mind and body, (2) embracing each other in mutual support, (3) learning in a facilitating environment, and (4) using a variety of learning modalities. Students wished to have a voice in setting the curriculum, favored a variety of assignments, and sought to expand their learning environment beyond the classroom. Finally, challenges for teachers and school leaders are discussed.

Backpacking and leadership development are two of my passions. I wanted to create an opportunity where the two come together. Thus, the concept of Leaders Unplugged was conceived. This five day, twenty-three mile backpacking adventure will provide students with an opportunity to push themselves as leaders and as people.
