This study examines the relationship between mathematics achievement and the instructional approach used (flipped versus traditional). A suburban school district located outside of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul implemented flipped learning instruction in one-half of all six elementary sites across the district. Half of the students in fifth grade mathematics classes received instruction via traditional lecture-style teaching methodology while the other half of the students received instruction via flipped learning instruction. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to discover the lived experiences of Third Culture Kids transitioning to postsecondary education in the United States, and what role social media had in building or maintaining bridging and bonding social capital. All the participants in this study were Missionary Kids (MKs). MKs, a subgroup of Third Culture Kids (TCKs), spend a significant part of their developmental years outside their passport culture due to the nature of their parents work. The purpose of this study was to investigate the personal, institutional, and environmental factors that influenced a principal’s decision to leave his or her school. Respondents included six elementary principals in rural Minnesota who left their positions within the past year. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded, and analyzed for themes. Transferability and credibility were enhanced through the participation of the researcher in a bracketing interview to identify potential biases, independent coding by an outside analyst of the bracketing and regular interviews, and repeated checks with respondents about transcriptions, codes, and themes. A qualitative case study was conducted in a rural Title I school in the Piedmont of North Carolina using a pre and post-intervention survey and participant interviews, during the summer of 2016. The intervention was a workshop for parents to show them how to use online reading apps at home to help their child with reading. The goal was to determine if that workshop would improve parental engagement. The study found that the one time offering of the workshop for parents did improve parental engagement. This was a comparative case study that used in-depth interviews of parents to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of two grade configurations, and the possible influence of grade configuration on parent participation and parental attitudes toward their schools. The purpose of this study was to gain deeper insight into the differences of two grade configurations from the perspective of parents, and determine if parents reveal more advantages of one model over the other model. Abstract This is a quantitative cross sectional survey design dual method study to test a theory that relates arts integration to achievement for students in grades two through six at three arts magnet schools and five non-arts schools in two school districts in Minnesota. Demographic groups studied included special education, ethnicity, socioeconomic status (FR), Limited English Proficiency (LEP), gender, and gifted. The dual design method included the use of cross tabulations, chi-square tests, MAP RIT results, and teacher practice survey responses to find relationships. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between cognitive and noncognitive variables, and academic performance among Physician Assistant (PA) students. Noncognitive variables (i.e. personality traits) were assessed using the Big Five Inventory and the Marlowe Crown Social Desirability Scale. Academic performance outcomes were defined by the participants’ preclinical GPA, clinical GPA, PACKRAT score, PANCE score, and PANCE pass/fail. Cognitive variables were assessed using participants’ overall preadmission GPA and science GPA. The study followed 146 PA student participants’ in seven class cohorts, from matriculation to graduation (first time PANCE). Pearson correlations were computed for each of the cognitive …

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze the impact of principal turnover in the principal’s office on the successful maintenance indicators of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The study sampled identified PBIS-utilizing, public, elementary and middle schools in the state of Minnesota. Research has helped established PBIS as an effective behavioral intervention in the United States. This dissertation took a phenomenological approach in order to take a deeper look into the experiences of five agricultural education teachers that taught English Learner (EL) students and factors that affected those experiences. Dunkin and Biddle’s (1973) Teacher Model provided the conceptual framework and underpinnings for the literature review. The study identified a pilot study teacher with EL experience and 4 agricultural education teachers that taught agricultural education at schools with at least a 15% EL student population. Recent studies have shown the predictive nature of mindset and motivation. Students tend to have one of two mindsets: a growth mindset or a fixed mindset (Dweck, 2000). Those with a growth mindset believe that their knowledge can increase and they are able to continuously improve. Students with a fixed mindset believe that their intelligence was bestowed upon them, and that they cannot really change how smart they can become. This is a quantitative study using archival data to focus on the achievement of students identified as gifted and talented in four schools in the Midwest in the same district. This study attempted to find if differences in student reading performance existed between 27 students identified as gifted that were placed in a homogeneous classroom compared to those placed in heterogeneous classrooms. Movement is important for brain development. This qualitative, multi-case study investigated the effects of the Minds-In-Motion Maze targeted movement program on the students at a small, private school in the Midwest. Case studies encompassing 14 elementary students, represent the educational ability level, racial, and socio-economic diversity of the students in the school. The findings suggest that targeted movement activities showed noteworthy gains in auditory digit span in students who participated in the maze. A review of related literature highlighted the dominance of for-profit movement based interventions targeting students with social, emotional, and learning problems. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the use of social media among elementary school principals in Minnesota. The survey collected data from elementary school principals across the state of Minnesota gathering demographic information on age, years of service, presence of a district social media policy, gender, school location, school size, and school poverty level as defined by its free and reduced lunch rate. The intent of this exploratory, descriptive narrative inquiry was to understand the experiences of selected evangelicals serving as public school administrators who lead in the midst of skirmishes involving evangelical Christians and the local public schools where they serve. These conflicts are part of the larger cultural conflict between evangelical Christianity and public education. The narratives of five leaders were captured through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The purposeful sample of participants included administrators from Texas, Southern California, and the South, the Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest. This applied dissertation investigated how Muslim parents of children with special needs bring understanding to raising their child with special needs. This researcher conducted a qualitative study to find out if Muslim parents from different ethnic backgrounds had similar experiences to those studied by Jegatheesan, Miller, and Fowler (2010). The researcher developed and administered qualitative interviews to four Pakistani Muslim parents in England and three Somali Muslim parents in Minnesota.
