The Impact Of College Recreation Center Renovation On Overall Participant Utilization And Frequency, James R. Kilchenman

The purpose of this research study was to investigate changes in student utilization of a campus recreation center following a two-year renovation project that added 3,500 square feet to the existing facility. The variables studied for this investigation were the recreation center user age, class level, ethnicity, and sex. Data for this study were collected though activity reports produced when users swiped their University ID cards for admission to the recreation center. Overall there was a 189% increase with unique users following the renovation project. Mean student uses also increased for most variable categories, most notably with freshman and sophomore …

First-year experience initiatives have been underway in a variety of forms. Today, first-year seminar classes are popular transitional aids for new college students throughout the country. First-year seminars typically have common learning goals for new students. Academic achievement, social success, and personal growth and development were the learning goals assessed during this study. The influence of a college students living environment has been under investigation for many years. The purpose of this study was to analyze college student living environment factors that influenced college success at a mid-west metropolitan university. To narrow the definition of college success, this researcher specifically focused on retention, academic study habits, and student satisfaction.

This researcher identified three groups of students that lived in different living environments including on-campus, a hybrid on-campus/off-campus, and an off-campus arrangement. Freshman seminars have become standard in higher education programming. Although there is evidence that these programs are effective in helping the freshman-to-sophomore year persistence rate, there is little research into the specific components of such programs and how they affect academic persistence and career planning. There is also little research on how different students perceive the effectiveness of such programs. This research examined the perceived influence of a freshman seminar on academic persistence and career planning between two student cohorts, a business-major and an undecided-major, via a post-course questionnaire.
