The problem addressed in this dissertation is whether summer vacation accounts for more of the reading-achievement gap between minority and non-minority children than does the school year. A positive finding would support the compensatory approach to minority education; it would indicate that school can close the gap between minority and non-minority children. To test for the summer effect, the reading subtests of the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills were administered to approximately 1200 fifth-grade children in fifteen public schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in fall 1972, spring 1973, and fall 1973. The relationship of socio-cultural variables to selected personality variables was examined utilizing a sample of 141 Pueblo adolescent boys and girls from grade 7 through 12 with a mean age of 14. 9. Each subject was administered the 16PF and the TIB and predictions were made about scores and scoring distributions based on the Pueblo socio-cultural system as described in the anthropological literature. With a few exceptions the sample mean scores and score distributions were not significantly different from those of the norm groups of the tests utilized. It was hypothesized that reading strategies used by children from Spanish-speaking backgrounds reading in English are influenced by the facility in English of those children. Maturational levels of English structures used by two such children, one estimated by the teacher to be reading above grade level and one estimated by the teacher to be reading below grade level, were measured by transformational analysis. The use and effectiveness of reading strategies including sound/graphic systems, grammar, and meaning were determined for each reader. The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyzes selected teacher and student variables pertaining to personal and background characteristics, perceptions, prefer­ences and achievement.

The study sample consisted of social studies teachers and their classes in 34 New Mexico rural or small-town schools. Most of t􀀏e selected schools have a relatively high enrollment of minority group, low socioeconomic status (SES) students. Subjects are 60 teachers and 1255 students, representing approximately one-fifth of the senior high population of the participating schools.

Th~ proactive interference (PI) release procedure was used in two experiments to assess encoding, differential encoding, and the relative: dominance of encoding attributes in children's short-term memory. The procedure consisted of Ss receiving a series of memory tests, each of which involved the recall of a triad of auditorily-presented words after a 14 second retention interval. The Ss in the experimental groups received four successive recall tests with triads of words which were homogeneous with respect to a given attribute. The model would classify dialectal variations in the areas of phonology, morphology and vocabulary. This is a study of the acquisition by children of one aspect of communicative competence, the ability to decide that certain kinds of language are more appropriate to speakers of one sex than the other. It was first established that adults had such competence, and then shown how children came to approximate it. One of the first tasks of mothering is the feeding of the child. It is recognized that certain mothers have difficulty carrying out this function. If the mother has extreme difficulty with this task, her child is at risk for neurologic and the subsequent educational problems.

This study looked at the amount of stress in the mother in the year preceding delivery to the rate of weight gain in her child.
