A rapidly changing environment threatens the survival of many organizations. The global economy propelled by booming regional economies, new media and information technology, universal consumer cultures, emerging global standards, and opportunities for corporate cost-sharing, has dramatically changed the environment in which organizations exist today (Ohema,1998,p.17). This paper seeks to increase the growing body of knowledge relative to the “accompanying characteristics” or attendant attributes of caring (submissiveness, sacrifice, the ability to individualize, and being able to anticipate the needs of others). It also offers are four unique philosophical underpinnings of the attribute of caring. These dimensions include the reciprocal nature of caring, the hierarchical nature of caring, the requirement to be pro-active in caring, and being knowledgeable about the changing timetable of caring in people’s lives. In addition, an example of one university’s efforts to integrate caring across the curriculum is examined.

Orwell was a young police officer in the province that was still under British colonial rule. Douglas McGregor (1960) a thinker, leader, management and leadership theorist postulated over three decades ago that every leader has core assumptions about human nature and these assumptions influence the style of leadership practiced by the leader. McGregor’s views on leadership are important because he was the first to apply behavioural science findings to the world of business and leadership. The individualized education program (IEP) was the primary component of Part B of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975. Through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA 2004), the IEP has continued to direct the educational needs, goals and objectives, placement, evaluation criteria, present levels of educational performance, and duration of programming modifications for students receiving special education services (Drasgow, Yell, & Robinson, 2001; 20 U.S.C. § 1400). More than twelve million undergraduate students in the United States benefit from some form of financial aid. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Education (as cited in The American Council of Education 2008) indicate that 76% of undergraduates at public four-year degree-granting institutions during the 2003-2004 academic year received financial aid, while 89% of undergraduate students at private four-year not-for-profit degree-granting institutions were aid recipients.

Non-tenure track faculty comprise an increasing percentage of full time faculty employed by American universities. In 2001, the Association of American Universities (AAU) reported that 31% of full and part-time faculty were non-tenure track. According to a 2006 report by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), full-time non-tenure track faculty increased from 13% to 18.7% of total faculty between 1975-2003. These faculty often serve in most of the same roles as tenure track faculty, including teaching, research and service.
