Mature Librarians And The University Faculty: Factors Contributing To Librarian's Acceptance As Colleagues, Jean A. Major

In an exploratory study, eighteen mature librarians who are considered colleagues of teaching faculty were interviewed to understand actual instances of acceptance within an institution. Participants demonstrated that performing the role of librarian and exploiting campus governance activities contributed significantly to collegial acceptance and were used to advantage more often than a common interest in research. The most important factor, however, was self-confidence as a librarian. Models and mentors reportedly helped subjects learn to be colleagues with other faculty; library school often did not.

This study examined the relationship between teacher salaries and certain wealth and demographics of Indiana school corporations. Source data were obtained through the Indiana State Department of Education, the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners, the Indiana School Board Association, and the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board. Data collected were the teacher salaries, the demographic type, average dai1y memberships (ADM), assessed valuations (AV), General Fund tax rates, and Property Tax Replacement Credit amounts of all Indiana school corporations. This study investigates selected Indiana school superintendents' perceptions of student evaluation using standardized and teacher-made tests. In the survey instrument used for the study, superintendents' perceptions of student testing were verified from the perspectives of their age, experience and school district location. The survey instrument also incorporated questions intended to identify participating superintendents' opinions on student evaluation with tests from their educational beliefs, assumptions, and philosophical orientations. Two hundred Indiana school superintendents were selected to participate in the study. The method of selection was the stratified random sampling technique. The purpose of this study was to identify variables that have contributed to the growth and development of successful women and to explore whether those variables were the same for Black and White women by comparing the perceptions and backgrounds of women who have reached top level positions in the fields of education, business, human services, and government.

Post release follow-up was conducted on a total of 95 Kentucky Correctional Facilities inmates, who had acquired a General Equivalency Certificate in the years 1981-1983.

The rate of Recidivism of this group was compared to that of all parolees released during that period.

It was found that the parolees in general who were released during that time period returned to the institution at a rate of 36.7 percent, The parolees who had completed the GED Program in the institution prior to release returned at a rate of 35.78 percent.
