The evaluation models described in previous issues of the Quarterly represent some of the major paradigms of educational program evaluation; they have been used to guide many evaluations and they have influenced the thinking of many practicing evaluators. Models provide a broad base for designing evaluation activities by offering a framework and conceptualization that guides both the focus of the evaluator and the orientation of the evaluation. But models do not provide strategies for implementation. Guidelines are provided by the design, which establishes the conditions and procedures for collecting the data required to answer the questions of concern. The design …

Brought up and socialized in a peaceful, prosperous era, showered with love and affection by their parents, and provided with the finest education and life-style that money could buy, American youth experienced a series of shocks when they confronted the unfortunate realities of their own society (prejudice, inequality, etc.), and the seemingly brutal conduct of that society toward other societies (the Vietnam War). In recent years, it has become as commonplace in American colleges and universities for students to grade professors as for professors to grade students. Despite the impressive growth of student evaluations, controversy over their use continues without letup. Unfortunately, it has been exacerbated by the not infrequent misuse of student feedback. To facilitate more appropriate and equitable use of student evaluation, this paper will present specific strategy suggestions and general guidelines to help implement and maintain successful programs.

Instruction is more likely to be successful when the instructor is clear about his/her goals. Upon this axiom, a large number of instructional practices are based. One derivative of this axiom is the following: instruction is more likely to be efficient and effective when the instructor can state his/her instructional goals in clear behavioral objectives. To further clarify the instructor's goals, one might undertake a task analysis, job analysis, content analysis, an analysis of competencies, a needs analysis and/or a learning hierarchy. As I guide it through its second year of life, I look forward to corresponding with many of you, as contributors, reviewers and readers, and in maintaining the editorial standards and policies which have been established by the Editorial Board and upheld by David.

A 1975 ETS survey by John Centra reported that close to 60 percent of the 2600 degree granting institutions of higher education in the United States had some type of staff development program or someone who coordinated staff development activities (Centra, 1976). As the decade of the 80's begins, there are no indications that staff development has experienced the loss of momentum so characteristic of other innovative ventures in higher education; rather, the interest in the development of staff is continuing to grow. Improving discussion participation is one of the most widespread concerns of college instructors. Like most consultants, I often make suggestions based on my own experience and on hunches formed from observing a variety of teachers at work. Yet I have felt the need to test these hunches, and to generate solutions to the problem that are based on objective, systematic evidence. To take a step in this direction has been the purpose of the research project presented here.

Learning Styles: A Tool For Faculty Development, Daniel W. Wheeler

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Grasha and Reichmann (1975) developed a questionnaire to assess student learning style. This instrument allows the student to identify preferred styles described as Independent, Dependent, Avoidant, Competitive, Collaborative and Participant. This material has been used in various faculty development programs.

Kolb (1976, 1977) developed a self-report instrument, The Learning Style Inventory, to measure perceived learning styles. The instrument uses as its basis the experiential learning model with its origin in the work of Jung (1923) and Lewin (1945).

The Learning Style Inventory has been used to assess individual preference for the four identified learning abilities as shown in Figure 1. …

What does one write in one's final statement as editor? David Outcalt, the previous editor, suggested I remind the readership of how difficult it was to follow in his footsteps. Sandy Inglis, who will be the new editor, thought it might be appropriate to remind people of the hard work and long hours that accompany this position. Both are correct and deserve thanks and support, respectively. However, I have something else in mind.
