School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

To meet the challenges of the next century, continuing higher education is recreating itself to assume position of campus-wide leadership. Traditional continuing education units that were simply the university's off-campus course providers are using their organizational flexibility to take on innovative and expanded roles that include for-profit distance learning centers, international educational partnerships, welfare-to-work initiatives, and post-baccalaureate programs for the changing workforce. While maintaining the academy's high standards of scholarship and research, continuing education is also being asked to become a lead voice in conceiving the new academy and in linking the university to the demands of society. These new …

African-American Female College Presidents And Leadership Styles, Runae Edwards Wilson Jan 1998

African-American Female College Presidents And Leadership Styles, Runae Edwards Wilson

Trotter Review

The leadership characteristics of African-American female college and university presidents have rarely been studied. The lack of research in this area is due, in part, to the absence of African-American females in leadership positions at four year higher education institutions. A contributing factor to the shortage of African-American female top level administrators is the "double whammy," or belonging to two groups that are discriminated against, African-Americans and females. The wage gap, institutional kinship, the old boy system, and role prejudice (a preconceived preference for specific behavior by the visibly identifiable group) are factors that have proved prohibitive to the ascension …

Leadership For Diversity: Effectively Managing For A Transformation, Adrian K. Haugabrook Jan 1998

Leadership For Diversity: Effectively Managing For A Transformation, Adrian K. Haugabrook

Trotter Review

Diversity has become a contentious theme woven throughout many different aspects of higher education. Multiculturalism, ethnic studies, women's studies, curriculum reform, strategies for increasing access and opportunity to the under-represented and under-served and improving campus climate have all been vehicles to promote and further diversity initiatives. Diversity stands to challenge much of what has been the traditional views of higher education. The efforts to promote multiculturalism and diversity have caused the academy and the enterprise of higher learning to introspectively examine and reexamine its values, beliefs and relationships to a much larger society. American higher education now sees itself in …

Leadership In Higher Education: A Changing Paradigm, Allen L. Sessoms Sep 1994

Leadership In Higher Education: A Changing Paradigm, Allen L. Sessoms

Trotter Review

Senior administrators at public colleges and universities have previously been in the enviable position of managing reasonably stable institutions that have enjoyed an essential place in society. These institutions were born of society's desire to ensure access to the fruits of learning by a broad spectrum of citizens and to ensure that the knowledge developed was put at the service of industry and of the nation. In the past, and particularly after World War II, public institutions of higher education enjoyed explosive growth in both the numbers of students and in terms of public support. In addition, after the launch …

Preparing For Change: Management Concepts For The Future—Ideas From Supermanaging By Brown And Weiner, Ladonna Mcmurray Geddes

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reviews concepts from Brown and Weiner’s Supermanaging and considers their application to communication administration in higher education. The discussion highlights rapid social and technological change, the growth of continuing education, and shifting demographics, all of which demand flexible and future-oriented management. Key ideas include environmental scanning, “error-embracing” leadership, and the importance of marketing strategies for organizational survival. Middle managers are urged to redefine their roles by fostering self-motivating environments, networking, anticipating issues, and demonstrating unique contributions. The article also stresses the significance of social contracts, balancing responsibilities to employees, clients, communities, and funding agencies. Applying these concepts to …

Preparing For Change: What Is Learned From The Knowledge Executive?, Robert M. Smith Oct 1987

Preparing For Change: What Is Learned From The Knowledge Executive?, Robert M. Smith

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article discusses the concept of the “knowledge executive” and its implications for leadership, education, and communication in an information-dependent society. It emphasizes how rapid technological change and the growing centrality of information have transformed leadership roles, requiring executives to be generalists capable of synthesizing diverse perspectives, managing ambiguity, and fostering collaboration. The discussion highlights lessons for executives, including the need for integrative thinking, participatory decision-making, and foresight in anticipating second-order consequences. For education, it underscores the importance of liberal arts training in developing problem-solving, ethical reasoning, cultural awareness, and global perspectives. Finally, the article identifies communication as an essential …

Leadership And Conflict Management, Linda L. Putnam Aug 1987

Leadership And Conflict Management, Linda L. Putnam

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines conflict management as a central component of organizational life, particularly within educational settings. Conflict is defined as interaction among interdependent parties over perceived incompatible goals or actions, with potential to be either destructive or constructive. Constructive management emphasizes clarity, openness, and trust, while destructive approaches foster rigidity, defensiveness, and escalation. The discussion explores the unique features of academic organizations, including loosely coupled systems, competing goals, scarce resources, and divided professional loyalties, which make them especially prone to disputes. Strategies reviewed include conflict styles such as confrontation, forcing, smoothing, compromising, and avoiding, as well as bargaining approaches that …

Leadership And Management In The Academic Department: How Can Community And Bureaucracy Be Reconciled?, George Cheney Aug 1987

Leadership And Management In The Academic Department: How Can Community And Bureaucracy Be Reconciled?, George Cheney

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article explores the tension between bureaucracy and community in academic departments, offering leadership as a means of reconciliation. Bureaucratic structures, rooted in Weber’s analysis, are critiqued for displacing goals with procedures, obscuring social purposes, and minimizing individuals. These issues are shown to be particularly relevant in higher education, where efficiency, specialization, and management often overshadow academic ideals. The discussion contrasts management, associated with control and manipulation, with leadership, defined as guidance, inspiration, and cooperation. Drawing on organizational theory, leadership is described as fostering communication, articulating shared purpose, and enlisting cooperation. The metaphor of community is proposed to balance bureaucratic …

Corporate Management Strategies: Applications For Communication Administrators From Iacocca: An Autobiography, Ladonna Mcmurray Geddes Jan 1987

Corporate Management Strategies: Applications For Communication Administrators From Iacocca: An Autobiography, Ladonna Mcmurray Geddes

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article interprets Lee Iacocca’s managerial philosophy for application in academic and communication administration. Framing Iacocca’s principles of motivation, accountability, and leadership within a university context, the discussion explores how participatory management and clear goal articulation can improve departmental performance. The analysis emphasizes Iacocca’s model of “management by wandering around” as a strategy for maintaining visibility and fostering open communication. It also adapts his quarterly review system and “equality of sacrifice” concepts to faculty evaluation and workload distribution. Drawing from administrative experience, the author proposes a Distribution of Effort Agreement to formalize faculty commitments across teaching, research, and service, aligning …

Applications From In Search Of Excellence By Thomas Peters And Robert Waterman, Jr., Robert S. Goyer Jan 1987

Applications From In Search Of Excellence By Thomas Peters And Robert Waterman, Jr., Robert S. Goyer

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article interprets Thomas Peters and Robert Waterman’s In Search of Excellence (1982) for application in academic administration, particularly within communication departments. The analysis outlines the authors’ critique of the rational-analytic management model and their advocacy for a value-driven, people-centered approach to organizational effectiveness. Goyer argues that while analogies between corporate and academic contexts are imperfect, two of Peters and Waterman’s eight principles—“productivity through people” and “simultaneous loose-tight properties”—offer meaningful guidance for departmental leadership. The first emphasizes creating an environment in which every faculty member’s contributions are recognized and rewarded through systematic yet flexible evaluation. The second highlights the chair’s …

Corporate Management Strategies: Applications For Communication Administrators From Managing By Harold Geneen, James E. Roever Jan 1987

Corporate Management Strategies: Applications For Communication Administrators From Managing By Harold Geneen, James E. Roever

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article adapts Harold Geneen’s corporate management principles from Managing (1984) for use in higher education and communication administration. Drawing parallels between industrial management and academic governance, it examines Geneen’s key concepts—goal-oriented planning, open communication, leadership accountability, and data-driven decision-making—and applies them to the context of colleges and universities. The discussion critiques higher education’s reliance on long-range planning at the expense of short-term results, advocating for more immediate and measurable goals. It also highlights the importance of clarifying organizational roles, promoting trust among faculty and administrators, and fostering open communication to reduce campus politicization. The article suggests that academic institutions, …

The Joys Of Administration, Patti P. Gillespie Oct 1986

The Joys Of Administration, Patti P. Gillespie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the challenges and satisfactions inherent in academic administration, offering pragmatic reflection rather than empirical analysis. Using the metaphor of “joys” to structure the discussion, the author outlines four dimensions of effective administrative practice: the job itself, the self, the objectives, and the necessity of humor. The argument emphasizes the variability of administrative roles, particularly department chair positions, which may range from primarily managerial to deeply academic or externally oriented. Successful administrators are characterized by congruence between personal strengths and institutional needs, as well as the capacity to delegate tasks strategically. The essay critiques the common reversal of …

Administrative Style And The Small College Context, Joseph W. Macdoniels Oct 1985

Administrative Style And The Small College Context, Joseph W. Macdoniels

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the distinctive administrative challenges faced by leaders of small college communication programs and argues that prevailing managerial models are poorly suited to the values and structures of these institutions. It begins by distinguishing administration, management, and leadership, noting that contemporary higher education privileges managerial thinking oriented toward efficiency, control, and product driven outcomes. The discussion contends that this framework conflicts with the interpersonal, process oriented commitments of communication faculty and with the collegial traditions of small liberal arts colleges. The essay outlines the limitations of the management oriented model at the departmental level, where chairs are expected …
