The gender stigma of work-life balance (WLB) policies as concessions for mothers and female caregivers originated with the push by the Women’s Movement for gender workplace equity in the late 20th century. Unfortunately, this perception continues in the 21st century and retains the additional stigma of employee participation in these policies–—regardless of gender–—as a detrimental career move. Thus, home and work responsibilities for professionals of all genders who desire more occupational flexibility remain unreconciled. Despite this dominant national and international outlook, this article encourages new century organizations and profes- sionals to reject the traditional perception of occupational inequity through gender- …

Design-thinking is an abductive and participatory process in which designers are required to manage constraints, generate solutions, and follow project timelines in order to complete project goals. This exploration study sought to look at how designers in various disciplinary fields approach design projects. Designers were asked to describe a project and a decision that they had to make. Decisions were analyzed to determine whether they were ready-made versus custommade solutions and the process by which the designers arrived at the decisions was categorized as idea-imposition or discovery. The purpose of this study was to compare the reading and math performance of students who attended a year-round elementary school to the performance of students who attended a traditional calendar elementary school in one small urban school division in Virginia. As a part of the study, the performance of these students was also examined as they transitioned into the same traditional calendar middle school to determine if year-round education had long-term effects on student achievement. Analysis of Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) raw score data was used to determine the level of performance in reading and math for the …

An Evaluation Of A Central Virginia Alternative School : Do Students Benefit From Their Experience?, Anthony H. Francis

The purpose of this study was to determine if students benefited from attending a Central Virginia alternative school, defined as a remedial alternative school which scaffolds students both socially and academically so they may return to their base school. Twelve students took part in the study that examined the academic indicators of grade point average, attendance, and number of disciplinary infractions as well as students’ perceptions of their experiences. The difference in trust levels was minimal, but students had accurate perceptions of how their grades, attendance, and discipline had changed while attending the alternative school. Community colleges are expected to contribute to economic development efforts by implementing new programs that respond to the needs of business and industry. Program development is complex, especially for community colleges in rural areas where business and industry are scarce. This qualitative study explores the factors that influence successful occupational programs at rural community colleges. Participants included administrators, faculty members, and students associated with three rural community colleges in West Virginia, as well as one state-level administrator and a former community college president. This study examined the educational attainment and income of nontraditional students in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and its connection to workforce development efforts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The population for this study included first time students between 25 and 64 years of age who attended KCTCS either full-time or part-time during the academic years of 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009. The Kentucky Center for Education and Workforce Statistics provided archival data that included information from this population regarding the type of educational credential earned. This dissertation was designed to examine the impact of the South Carolina Initial Mentor Training on the self-efficacy of mentor teachers. The study discussed the current training program for mentors in South Carolina and the expected outcomes the training is supposed to produce. The South Carolina Initial Mentor Training was studied in a cohort of nine school districts in the midlands and upstate of South Carolina in partnership with Winthrop University. The purpose of this program evaluation was to analyze the effects of the Ventures for Excellence program on the hiring process of a northwestern North Carolina school district. The perceived problem was that in this particular school district there was a need for a hiring instrument that provided a large applicant pool of quality teachers and created an efficient hiring system. There was also a need to have a hiring system that would protect the school district from any legal issues that might arise from the interviewing of teacher applicants.

Practices of academic dishonesty are prevalent on college campuses (Chen, 2009; O’Rourke, Barnes, Deaton, Fulks, Ryan, & Rettinger, 2010; Simkin, 2010). The pressure to excel, peer perception, and the lack of faculty enforcement are among several factors that lead students to cheat. Building on an initial multi campus 673 participant-survey results, circumstances of academic integrity among Saudi students at a Midwestern university are examined through in depth interviews. Findings revealed prevalence of academic misconduct behaviors among study participants. Academic misconduct behaviors ranged from simple utilization of cheating on tests to utilizing internet paper mills. Findings also showed a gap between …

The Supreme Court ruling in Christian Legal Society v. Alcohol Use At Otterbein, Otterbein Student Affairs Office, Otterbein Athletic Department

The 360 Proof Personal Feedback Index (PFI) was developed to measure alcohol usage and attitudes among college students. During the spring of 2014, 441 Otterbein students, including student athletes and Greeks, completed the PFI. The data indicates that that 58 percent of Otterbein students drink between zero and three drinks per week; 60 percent drink between zero and three drinks per occasion. The average number of drinks consumed per week at Otterbein is 5.8, which is consistent with the national average. PFI data indicates that Otterbein students drink slightly less than other college students in the nation. See the full …

For U.S. students, ninth grade is a critical year in the educational pipeline, often dictating a school-to-school transition period. The author evaluates the ramification on achievement following such a school-to-school transition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a ninth grade transition program called Link Crew, which was implemented by a large comprehensive urban high school. Do transition programs assist in maintaining achievement and readiness?
