The purpose of this study is to identify organizational culture types and leadership roles among research and non-research libraries in higher education institutions in the United States and to reveal trends that can assist in enacting needed organizational change. Organizational culture and leadership are two intertwined concepts that are strongly aligned with the human element of any supervisory experience. The purpose of this study was to examine legislative and societal developments in the United States in relation to changes in educational administration and determine the existence of bifurcation points of change. The effects of legislative and societal changes on the tasks on which administrators focus their time were evaluated. The administrators were surveyed to determine if changes in time on task have occurred to meet the demands of current legislative priorities and if any demographic relationships existed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between leadership styles and organizational culture within schools of nursing. A non-probability convenience sample (N=149) of subjects was obtained from BSN schools of nursing within the Southern Regional Education Board geographical area. Three data collection tools were utilized including a demographic questionnaire; the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire (Bass & Avolio) which measures transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles; and the Organizational Culture Assessment Inventory (Cameron & Quinn) which measures four culture types including clan, market, adhocracy and hierarchy cultures. Survival Of The Fittest? The Rebranding Of West Virginia Higher Education, James Martin Owston

During the years 1996 to 2005, West Virginia produced the greatest proportion (56.25%) of regionally accredited institutional rebrandings. In addition, the state experienced the greatest proportion (25%) of the specific “college-to-university” rebranding strategy than any other state. This study set out to discover the reasons why West Virginia produced such a high percentage of “college-to-university” changes. Using a mixed method approach of analysis, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative methods to determine the rationale, strategies, and implications of the college-to-university change. Mr. Hamlin is a local (Huntington, WV) attorney who is an alumnus of Marshall University. Mr. Hamlin was the quarterback of the 1964 Marshall University football team and has been a long-time supporter of the football and athletic programs at Marshall. Following the expulsion of the University from the Mid-American Conference and the plane crash of 1971, Mr. Hamlin became actively involved in trying to convince the University's administration to seek membership in the Southern Conference.

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This article discusses concerns related to professional integrity in academics and to the use of collegiality as an informal criterion for employment and evaluation decisions. We question the nature of the educational enterprise and the academic environment within which both students and faculty operate. We use the AAUP Statement on Professional Ethics to guide our examination of collegiality, and the three traditional areas of faculty evaluation (teaching, scholarship, and service), as they relate to professional integrity. We discuss potential pitfalls in situations involving integrity concerns, and suggest that the use of collegiality in professional decisions is more prevalent and potentially …

Allocating For Graduation--A Correlation Analysis Of Institutional Education And General Expenditures And Six-Year Graduation Rates At All Public, Four-Year Or Above Degree-Granting Colleges And Universities, Danny R. Cantrell

This study utilizes six-year graduation rates and E&G expenditures for the population of all public, four-year or more degree-granting institutions in the United States, as reported in the National Center for Educational Statistics’ IPEDS database, to examine the correlation between graduation rate and institutional expenditures expressed as percentages of total institutional E&G expenditure. Results of this study’s partial correlation analysis revealed there is not a strong correlation between graduation rate and levels of E&G expenditures. Further, the study showed that the proportions of E&G expenditures do not vary appreciably at institutions with the highest, lowest, or mid-level six-year graduation rates. …

This study examines West Virginia P-12 teachers’ use of the Internet as a professional and instructional tool. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to gather descriptive data. Based on an extensive review of the literature, the researcher developed survey included 30 questions on the use of the Internet by teachers as a professional tool and by their students as an instructional tool. Two hundred forty-two West Virginia P-12 public school teachers participated in the study with fourteen participating in interviews. Interviews provided anecdotal information of teachers’ experiences in finding, creating, and using the Internet for professional and instructional activities. Findings …

The purpose of this study was to identify thinking style preferences of female college and university presidents and determine if differences in thinking style exist with regard to the independent variables of Carnegie classification, institutional control, highest academic degree earned, academic background/specialty, age, and total years of presidential experience. The Inquiry Mode Questionnaire (InQ) and a demographic data form were distributed to all 595 female presidents with institutions classified as Associate’s or higher by the Carnegie system. The purpose of this study was to analyze existing wage data to quantify the employment success of community and technical college graduates by program as an indicator of economic development in West Virginia. Data for the variables were obtained from archival databases and a cooperative agreement between state agencies. Descriptive statistics were utilized to examine employment rates, range of earnings, and employment in-industry of community and technical college graduates from 23 programs from 1997 to 2002. The purpose of this study was to determine if principals perceive a relationship between six job-required abilities and ten designs of professional development. The Larry Survey: A Web-based Questionnaire was used to gather demographics of participating principals, designs of professional development in which principals participate and those in which they would participate if given a choice, and the value principals believe specific designs have for their use/knowledge of job-required abilities.
