Recruiting And Retaining New Faculty In Communication, Deborah Borisoff Jan 1992

Recruiting And Retaining New Faculty In Communication, Deborah Borisoff

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Communication departments seek faculty who strengthen programs yet frequently confront a mismatch between recruitment hopes and retention realities. This article explains how limited candidate pools, affirmative action pressures, and inconsistent hiring processes complicate selecting colleagues who will thrive and earn tenure. Once appointed, new professors often describe their early years with metaphors of endurance rather than excitement, citing confusion, isolation, heavy expectations, unclear criteria, and budget anxiety. Administrators commonly underestimate these stresses. Six strategies are presented to bridge the gap between administrative intentions and faculty experiences. Regular orientation meetings clarify procedures and build peer support. Reduced teaching and targeted service …

Perceived Parental Communication And Adolescent Self-Esteem: Predictors Of Academic Performance And Drop-Out Rates, Linda Lanza-Kaduce, Lynne M. Webb Jan 1992

Perceived Parental Communication And Adolescent Self-Esteem: Predictors Of Academic Performance And Drop-Out Rates, Linda Lanza-Kaduce, Lynne M. Webb

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Drawing on the coordinated-management-of-meaning perspective, this study probes whether adolescents’ perceptions of parental communication forecast two major risk factors for dropping out of high school: low academic achievement and chronic absenteeism. Survey data were collected from students (enrolled in an alternative vocational high school in the southeastern United States. Participants rated how often mothers and fathers expressed three message families—control/autonomy, emotional support, and shared participation—while a 12-item semantic-differential scale captured self-esteem dimensions (efficacy, positive attributes, power). Official school records supplied GPA-to-ability ratios and absence counts. Separate path analyses for males and females revealed modest, gender-specific patterns: for boys, perceived maternal …

Scholarship In Mass Communication, 1915-1990: An Analysis Of Active Researchers' Productivity, Mark Hickson Iii, Randall K. Scott, Don W. Stacks, Jonathan H. Amsbary

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using author-index data from 19 major mass-communication journals spanning 1915-1990, this study constructs a longitudinal yardstick for individual research productivity among active scholars. All 28,466 author citations listed in the 1990 Index to Journals in Communication Studies were coded; scholars who had published within the previous five years were classified as active. The analysis identified 11,476 active authors with a mean output of 2.48 articles and isolated the 26 most prolific, each with at least 17 publications. Degree-granting institutions for these high performers clustered at Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Stanford, while current appointments were dispersed across 18 universities. The authors argue …

Basic Communication Course Directors: Results Of A Midwest Survey, James Benson, Lori Carrell Jan 1992

Basic Communication Course Directors: Results Of A Midwest Survey, James Benson, Lori Carrell

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This study documents how communication departments manage multiple sections of the basic public speaking course through a dedicated administrator called the Basic Course Director. A survey of Midwestern universities shows that most institutions appoint such a director whenever more than a handful of sections run each year. Directors are almost always tenure track or tenured professors and usually receive a course load reduction instead of direct monetary compensation. Reported responsibilities cluster in three areas: supervising instructors through mentoring evaluation and hiring; implementing standardized curricula and assessments to assure consistency across sections; and representing the course to students other departments and …

Liberality In The Arts: A Call For Academic Integrity In The Training Of Young Artists, Gerald Ratliff

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article calls for a renewed commitment to liberal arts breadth in educating young artists. Arguing that studio centered traditions and artist to artist apprenticeship leave critical gaps, it advocates a classroom based model that integrates communication, humanities, languages, mathematics, social and natural sciences. Such breadth, it claims, sharpens critical insight, enriches individual perspectives, and expands artistic vision. The article outlines quality instruction that pairs practicing artists with academic scholars, leverages technology, and fosters analytical discourse. It proposes curricula that blend liberal studies with tutorials, artistic internships, and experiential learning in real world settings. Evaluation strategies should combine classroom performance, …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using a mailed questionnaire to recent university graduates, this study evaluates how well undergraduate programs equip communication majors for communication and information technologies common in the workplace. Respondents reported that fax machines and word processing software were the only tools present in more than seventy percent of their work units, while voice messaging was the sole technology most of them used daily. Yet fewer than half felt competent with even these basic applications. Alumni said they acquired skills for nineteen of forty four surveyed technologies only after graduation, and most rated their campus preparation as only somewhat useful or not …

Implementing Speaking Across The Curriculum: A Case Study, Mahia Strohmaier, Marcia Stratton, Donald Novak, John Leipzig Jan 1992

Implementing Speaking Across The Curriculum: A Case Study, Mahia Strohmaier, Marcia Stratton, Donald Novak, John Leipzig

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Responding to evidence of weak oral communication competence among college students, this case study chronicles how one university embedded speaking across the curriculum within a new general core. Defining advanced literacy as critical comprehension plus public participation, the reform added a required presentation oriented basic course followed by an upper division oral intensive course in each major. Three emphases emerged: public speaking, small group, and technical presentation, each shaped by shared grading weights, developmental tasks, minimum audience size, and structured feedback. Speech Communication faculty revised the basic courses, delivered faculty workshops, and produced a handbook covering assessment, anxiety reduction, and …

The Public Relations Need In Assessment Reporting, Joan E. Aitken, Michael Neer Jan 1992

The Public Relations Need In Assessment Reporting, Joan E. Aitken, Michael Neer

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

University mandated assessment can improve learning but also carries political stakes that shape department survival. This article chronicles five years of assessment activity in a communication program after a statewide directive and shows how faculty moved from resistance to cautious optimism as they refined competency based tests portfolios and interviews. The central argument is that assessment findings double as public relations messages heard by administrators legislators and the media. When results are reported without strategic framing strong programs may appear weak and become targets for budget cuts. The essay details missteps such as offering candid commentary that was later quoted …

The State Of Communication Undergraduate Academic Advising, Beth M. Waggenspack, Wayne E. Hemsley Jan 1992

The State Of Communication Undergraduate Academic Advising, Beth M. Waggenspack, Wayne E. Hemsley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Based on a national questionnaire sent to every U.S. speech-communication program, this study maps the landscape of undergraduate academic advising in the discipline. Results show advising remains overwhelmingly faculty-based: 73 percent of departments assign all tenure-track (or all faculty) to the task, yet advisee distribution is skewed, with a median load of 23 students and 56 percent of departments allocating advisees by faculty area specialty. Preparation and rewards are thin; one-third of advisors receive no training and only 9 percent gain any course-load reduction, while 86 percent report no formal compensation. Training, when provided, is usually a brief workshop or …

Mass Communication Education Belongs To The University, Jeffery Mccall Jan 1992

Mass Communication Education Belongs To The University, Jeffery Mccall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay argues that mass communication programs must reclaim their place in the liberal arts rather than serving as vocational finishing schools for the media industry. Decades of deference, it contends, have let professionals dictate skills-heavy curricula, foster the belief that universities exist to supply entry-level labor, and equate education with training. To regain intellectual legitimacy—and political and financial standing on campus—the discipline should consolidate scattered sequences, emphasize theory, criticism, and media effects, and design courses usable by non-majors. Faculty hiring must meet the scholarly standards of other liberal arts departments, shifting evaluation from “war stories” to research and conceptual …
