Are Today's Teachers Being Prepared For Diversity? An Analysis Of School Catalogues, James Jennings, Illene Carver
Trotter Review
A recent content analysis study shows that while leading educators in Massachusetts stress the importance of preparing teachers for an increasingly diverse world, most teacher preparation schools virtually ignore the issue of racial and ethnic diversity in catalogues recruiting new students. This not only discourages people from diverse backgrounds from becoming teachers, but could also create a lack of understanding in the classroom of the black, Latino, and Asian students being taught.

Trotter Review
This issue of the Trotter Institute Review is devoted to a two-part proposition. The first is that institutions, agencies, businesses, and schools must begin to reflect the increasingly diverse ethnic and racial characteristics of American society. America is in the midst of a demographic revolution. It is unfortunate that some educators have chosen to ignore the social, economic, and intellectual implications of this change and that others have even become angry and attacked efforts to create an appreciation of multiculturalism.
This unfortunate resistance to the implications of America's unfolding demography leads to the second proposition reflected in this issue of …

Using Student Ratings Of Faculty In The Instructional Development Process, Phil Backlund

Student ratings remain the most common yet least trusted feedback source for college teaching improvement and personnel decisions. This article reviews misconceptions about their reliability, validity, and relationship to factors such as course level, elective status, and grading patterns, drawing on decades of research to show that well designed instruments can yield consistent and informative results. It argues that ratings should function as one element within a broader instructional development model that also incorporates self reflection, peer review, and administrative data. "Vaine Opinions, Flattering Hopes, False Valuations": Some Problems In Faculty Evaluation And Recruiting, Peter Garvie
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Drawing on historical anecdotes, this essay critiques the bureaucratization of faculty evaluation and recruiting in U.S. universities. Using the 1768 appointment of poet Thomas Gray as a starting point, it traces how informal, patronage-based hires evolved into multi-layered procedures that create an ‘absurd’ faith in objectivity. Four fallacies are identified: the illusion of abundant objective evidence, the belief that numerical scoring enhances accuracy, the assumption that codified detail guarantees wiser judgments, and the conviction that involving more reviewers ensures better decisions. Through examples of distorted reference letters, anonymous allegations, and tenure cases deferred until the final year, the analysis shows …

Alumni credited coursework in interpersonal communication, theory, and internships for career readiness and life skills, expressed strong satisfaction with faculty engagement, yet requested additional practical skill offerings. Gender income disparities and perceptions of curriculum gaps inform recommendations for expanded applied courses, systematic advising, and ongoing longitudinal assessment. By integrating alumni …

A Theory And Research Oriented Communication Major: Communication Studies, Mark V. Redmond, David W. Waggoner
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques the dominance of performance based courses within speech communication curricula and presents a model for a theory and research oriented undergraduate major in communication studies. Drawing on institutional experience at a land grant university, the authors identify structural and philosophical barriers that arise when departments prioritize public speaking service courses over scholarship and conceptual learning. Five guiding principles are proposed: redefining departmental identity beyond service roles, displacing public speaking as the defining gateway course, elevating theory and research above skill practice, aligning grading and rigor with disciplinary standards, and protecting faculty scholarship from teaching overloads. The resulting …

This article responds to critiques of a proposed communication studies curriculum by defending the primacy of theory and research over performance instruction in undergraduate programs. Grounded in experiences at a land grant university facing budget constraints and external service demands, the discussion identifies five threats to disciplinary integrity: limited scholarship production, insufficient curricular rigor, dominance of performance courses, heavy service orientation, and an over emphasis on public speaking. The authors argue that merging theory and practice in an introductory gateway course does not resolve these issues, citing grade inflation and unclear performance standards as evidence. Instead, they advocate reallocating resources …
