Efforts to prepare teachers to be leaders are often impeded by a number of barriers in society and schools. Obstacles in the workplace are largely products of organizational cultures and climates that place teachers in subordinate roles. The argument is made that consideration of these barriers must be incorporated into revisions of teacher education curricula.

The purpose of this study was (a) to investigate if differences exist in stakeholder perceptions of barriers to implementing shared decision-making (SDM), and (b) to investigate if differences exist in stakeholder perceptions across the following constructs of shared decision- making: empowerment, leadership, motivation, organizational culture, accountability, and learning organizations. Randomly selected members from the stakeholder categories of: parents, board of education members, superintendents, principals, and teachers, were the sample (N = 100). Stakeholder perception was compared on a composite score of the survey instrument. Perceptions were also compared across the six constructs of SDM for each of the stakeholder categories. …

Due to mounting school improvement demands, the role of the principal has increasingly received pressure throughout the past decade. Although frequently referred to as the catalyst for effective school change, few empirical studies exist addressing organizational variables influencing this key administrative position. It has strongly been suggested that the interpersonal relationship principals share with their superintendent may affect the principal's job satisfaction and performance evaluation.

This study intended to determine 1) if, among administrators in higher education, commitment to the work role, commitment to the family role, and work-family role conflict varied by gender and other demographic variables, and 2) what combination of variables best explained level of work-family role conflict in this population.

A random sample, stratified by type of institution, was selected from the 4,679 department chairs in 196 public colleges and universities in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) member states. The study compared social climate perceptions of allied health educational (AHE) program directors in order to discover the potential for high performance in accredited allied health educational programs. The study sought similarities, differences, and relationships in workplace social climate perceptions of program directors grouped by selected demographic characteristics.

Directors from accredited AHE programs were surveyed using the unmodified Work Environment Scale (WES) instrument. Forty null hypotheses were tested using multiple means comparison and linear regression.

WES scores showed no significant differences when compared by levels of allied health specialty, tenure status, highest degree, public or private institutional governance, and number …

Schools are being called upon to restructure, to make fundamental systemic changes which require a change in the culture of schooling. Little is known about how school culture develops. What role do leaders play in shaping culture? What influences do building size and the socioeconomic status of the students have on the culture?

The purpose of this study was to explore these relationships and to cluster and describe the culture profiles among Iowa elementary schools. A survey of a random sample of 250 Iowa elementary principals provided perceptual data from 214 respondents.

The purpose of this study was to describe the implementation of a major curriculum change at the fifth grade level in two different school district settings; an urban district and a suburban district. The major curriculum change was a shift from traditional reading and language arts instructional approaches to an Integrated Whole Language instructional approach. This study examined the history of the West Virginia Board of Regents from its inception in 1969 until its termination in 1989. The history was developed around a social systems theory concept and the identification of internal factors and forces that had an impact as the Board attempted to deal with the higher education issues that came before it. The principle objective of this study was the investigation of whether or not an enrichment program would increase the success of remedial students attempting to complete a university program of study. An descriptive analytical design was utilized to test a null hypothesis related to selected control and experimental samples of remedial students.
