This study shows that the school census is dropping rapidly in rural areas. It must be remembered that with the introduction of more labor saving farm machinery and the consolidation of small farms that the end is not in sight.

A greater percentage of children are enrolled in our schools. The percentage of attendance is higher and will continue to slowly improve. As consolidation of small schools progresses, school plants and physical equipment will improve.

Over one-half of the children in average daily attendance are transported. Percentage of enrollment and percentage of attendance are much better in the transported group. …

It is the purpose of this study to present the results of an investigation of these entrance tests, which were given under the auspices of the Registrar's Office and the Education Department to freshmen who entered school at Western Kentucky State College in September 1948.

The problem set up is of a three-fold nature, namely:

1. To determine the value, if any, of the entrance examinations as predictive agents for college success.
2. To study the weaknesses exhibited by students on the arithmetic achievement test.

In 1936 there was considerable dissatisfaction with the rating scale being used in the supervision of student teaching at the Central Washington College of Education, and it was felt that a new scale was needed. Consequently, three faculty members, the primary supervisor, the supervisor of rural teaching, and the director of personnel and placement decided to make a detailed study and to construct a new rating scale. The Ellensburg scale, originally evolved for the rating of student teachers with emphasis on guiding their growth, should be equally helpful in the rating and guidance of teachers in service.

In this study the records examined showed that the per capita cost of instruction in the one-room and the two-room schools varied from three to six times that of the larger schools. The one-room school is the most expensive means of education, yet it offers far fewer advantages and opportunities. The decline in the number of these schools has been in progress for a number of years. This has been true in the rural sections that have a larger number of improved roads.
