At this juncture when policymakers are being asked to choose between deregulation and reform, problems affecting the superintendency need to be framed appropriately and policy decisions need to be based on evidence and not raw politics or emotion. Deregulating a profession clearly is a serious matter that is prudent either when the need for the state to protect the public from practitioners is no longer valid or when the underlying knowledge has been found to be fraudulent or irrelevant (Kowalski, 2004). Why Are School Districts Abandoning The Core-Plus Mathematics Curriculum, Amber Rae Richgels

In this paper, the author establishes that high schools are abandoning the Core-Plus Mathematics curriculum and determines the need for curricular reform and the motivation to develop such standards-based programs. She discovers that although Core- Plus is a nationally recognized, exemplary mathematics curriculum, school districts are deciding to discontinue the curricular option of Core-Plus. The author reviewed literature and interviewed teachers from schools that have recently decided to abandon Core-Plus in attempt to determine factors leading to these decisions. This paper discusses those interviews, provides suggestions for the future adoption of Core-Plus, and concludes with recommendations that further study be …

With the current research study, investigations were thoroughly made and suggestions are provided on the improvement of faculty performance in the use of technologies at the institution to teach and convey knowledge to their students. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (P.L. 94-142 [20 U.S.C., §1400 et seq.), authorized by Congress in 1975 and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004, guarantees all children with disabilities the right to a free appropriate public education and guarantees procedural safeguards to assure protection of the rights of these children and their parents. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) (PL-107-110 [20 U.S.C. §6301, et seq.], 2001) requires, among other things, that schools be accountable for education results through annual standardized testing and through additional standards that determine a school’s adequate yearly progress (AYP). The project examined key elements of success in large high school conversions to smaller learning community complexes. The review of current research found that the mere act of making schools smaller by size of staff and student population is not enough of a structural change to affect student learning and achievement. Six defining characteristics of a small school were identified as key elements to a learning community that can demonstrate success by significantly improved graduation rates, testing scores and college applications and acceptances. Teacher workforce and careers

This research was conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in 2005. The study was a result of the New Zealand Primary Teachers Collective Agreement 2004-2007 which specified that a workload study be complete to consider how the work of a teacher could be better structured, resourced and organised to support more effective classroom teaching. The purpose of the study was to gain an understanding of the nature and patterns of primary teachers' work. The research was commissioned by the New Zealand Ministry of Education.

This inquiry is an analysis of the trend toward infusing practitioners into the preparation of school administrators. Motives for increasing the number of part-time employees in higher education are identified and specific problems associated with the deployment of these instructors are discussed. The argument is made that the merits of this trend depend on the extent to which department policy addresses adjunct faculty employment, deployment and development in relation to a reform vision and strategy. Essential policy considerations related to involving practitioners are recommended.

Clearly, no issue is currently more crucial to the future of the position of school district superintendent than the battle being fought over professional preparation and state licensing. The intent of licensing professionals is to protect society and not the licensee. Consequently, a decision to deregulate a profession should not be made solely in political arenas in which self- and group interests are more likely to outweigh societal interests. The purpose of this study was to identify the possible relationship between spiritual well being and college adjustment in first-year college students. The Spiritual Well Being Scale and the College Adjustment Scales were administered. Relational analysis was used to investigate 91 college freshmen enrolled in a freshman seminar course at Charleston Southern University, Charleston, South Carolina. This relational analysis included both psychological and developmental aspects of college adjustment in nine specific areas of college adjustment: anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, family relationships, academic problems, and career problems. Evaluating A Moral Thinking Assessment Model For Evangelical Christian Liberal Arts Colleges, Michael A. Hayes

A model using moral judgment and cultural ideology (political and religious ideology) for predicting moral thinking about critical social and political issues, developed by Narvaez, Getz, Rest, and Thoma (1999), was assessed for utility with students at evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges. Freshmen (N = 199) and seniors (N = 230) from 2 evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges participated, completing the Defining Issues Test 2, Inventory of Religious Belief, and Attitudes Toward Human Rights Inventory. The regression model predicted a significant amount of variance for the students in this study; however, the R² value (.22) was much smaller than …
