A Survey Of Theatre Programs, Part Two: Analysis Of Graduate And Undergraduate Populations, Faculty Compositions/Activities And Theatre Courses/Productions, Mary Helen Brown, Deborah Roach Barker, Larry L. Barker Aug 1989

A Survey Of Theatre Programs, Part Two: Analysis Of Graduate And Undergraduate Populations, Faculty Compositions/Activities And Theatre Courses/Productions, Mary Helen Brown, Deborah Roach Barker, Larry L. Barker

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reports findings from a national survey of theatre departments in the United States and Canada, analyzing patterns in faculty composition, student enrollment, course offerings, and production activity across institutional types. It documents correlations between the highest degree awarded by a department and factors such as undergraduate and graduate theatre major populations, availability of faculty release time, and the number and variety of staged productions. The analysis reveals that departments offering terminal degrees—particularly the PhD and MFA—tend to have more students, fuller curricula, greater faculty resources, and expanded opportunities for creative or scholarly reassignment. In contrast, associate and bachelor's …

The Context Of The B.A. In Theatre, Joanna Rotte Aug 1989

The Context Of The B.A. In Theatre, Joanna Rotte

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reflects on the termination of a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre program at a private university, examining the institutional, cultural, and political contexts that rendered the decision possible. It critiques the marginal status of the fine arts in higher education, arguing that theatre is especially vulnerable due to its exclusion from the broader educational experience of most Americans. The article calls for theatre educators to revise curricula with pluralistic awareness, contemporary relevance, and a commitment to aesthetic and historical truth. It urges faculty to advocate for theatre education not as vocational training or audience development, but as essential …

The Employability Of Graduates Of Liberal Arts Programs, Al Weitzel Aug 1989

The Employability Of Graduates Of Liberal Arts Programs, Al Weitzel

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the employability of speech communication and liberal arts graduates, assessing claims about career outcomes through a review of empirical studies, national surveys, and employer perceptions. While some data suggest liberal studies graduates perform competitively in long term professional advancement, particularly in managerial roles, findings reveal that immediate employment prospects remain limited due to employer preferences for business and technical degrees. The article critiques optimistic narratives that overstate workforce demand for communication majors, instead calling for more accurate academic advising and targeted institutional strategies to improve graduate outcomes. These include integrating career planning into curricula, cultivating business partnerships, …

Faculty Evaluation At A Community College, Dick Stine

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article offers a descriptive case study of faculty evaluation practices at a midwestern community college, highlighting key differences between two year and four year institutional expectations. This article reviews the development and implementation of external evaluation systems for assessing creative achievement in academic theatre, particularly in the context of promotion and tenure decisions. Tracing the evolution of national guidelines and professional task force recommendations, the discussion outlines key principles for documenting artistic work, including peer and extramural review, open evaluator selection, and extended timeframes for assessment. It explores tensions between educational and professional standards, addresses the risks of overemphasizing directing over other creative roles, and raises concerns about the potential for artistic conservatism under continuous scrutiny. The article argues that evaluation practices must reflect diverse institutional …

The Role Of Indirect Tests In Assessing Communication Competence, Michael R. Neer Aug 1989

The Role Of Indirect Tests In Assessing Communication Competence, Michael R. Neer

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reports on the design, implementation, and analysis of an indirect assessment instrument developed to measure communication competence among graduating seniors at a public urban university. Developed to support diagnostic placement and curricular review, the assessment includes components in public speaking, communication theory, mass communication, and media writing, emphasizing cognitive understanding rather than observed performance. Results indicate moderate reliability across test components and reveal that academic performance, internship experience, employment status, and time to degree completion mediate assessment outcomes. Grade point average alone was not a consistent predictor of performance, suggesting that behavioral application and contextual engagement play significant …

Problems With The Use Of Citation Indexes In Communication Research, Edward Funkhouser Aug 1989

Problems With The Use Of Citation Indexes In Communication Research, Edward Funkhouser

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article evaluates the limitations of using citation indexes as research tools in communication studies, particularly when ranking journals, departments, or individual scholars. It examines how the omission of five major communication journals from widely used indexes distorts the visibility and influence of scholarship in the field. Through an analysis of citations to articles published in leading association journals, the study finds that approximately one third of all citations originate from journals not included in citation databases. These omissions reduce the effectiveness of citation indexes for literature searches, bibliometric studies, and faculty evaluation. The article advocates for the inclusion of …

Association For Theatre In Higher Education Task Force On Distribution Chair's Report, Jon Whitmore

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article presents a policy report from a national task force convened to examine workload distribution and program structure within collegiate theatre departments. Initially charged with developing guidelines for faculty assignment, the task force identified broader systemic imbalances affecting the discipline, including overextended faculty, declining student preparation, insufficient research capacity, and pressure to prioritize production over pedagogy. The report urges departments to define clear educational missions, align degree offerings with available resources, and reevaluate production models to prioritize student learning and disciplinary advancement. It also calls for workload policies that account for discipline specific labor such as directing, design, dramaturgy, …
