Creative He(Arts) Club, Lizbeth D. Chavez, Karen Martinez
Honors Expanded Learning Clubs
The goal of the club is for students to explore different areas in the visual arts–including drawing, painting, printmaking, and pottery– and gain knowledge about a variety of materials and skills. By the end of club, students will have expanded their knowledge in art history and have learned about the components, elements, and principles of art. At the same time, the projects planned will allow students to apply what they learn to their own creativity and ideas.

Child’S Play: A Service Learning Project Conducted At Roroš, Nové Mešto Pod Smrkem, Sanaya Attari
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
For my Independent Study Project, I designed a board game for young children inspired by the service learning activities held at ROROŠ. ROROŠ is a private organization located in the town of Nové Mešto pod Smrkem, offering different activities for children which provide a meaningful use of their leisure time. For a period of three weeks, I lived in Nové Mešto with Yveta Svobodová, one of the head directors of the organization. During my stay, I partook in several activities each week and used my experiences to generate new ideas when designing the final game. The game was completed by …

When Crayons Meet Tibetan Living Room Walls: Early Childhood In Exile, Emma Hart
When Crayons Meet Tibetan Living Room Walls: Early Childhood In Exile, Emma Hart
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study aims to understand early childhood caregiving among Tibetan refugees living in Nepal. Due to the brain’s enormous developmental plasticity from ages zero to three, children’s experiences during this period are extremely important to explaining their future learnings in school, interactions with people, and engagements with their surroundings. Through interviews and observations, Tibetan parents shared their conceptions of early childhood, parent-child interaction norms, dreams for their children, and how their status as refugees in Nepal affects these. Research was conducted in two Pokhara district Tibetan settlements and one settlement in Mustang. Connected by the flow of children and adults …
The Relations Between Anxiety Symptoms And Friendships In Adolescence, Phoebe Welcome
The Relations Between Anxiety Symptoms And Friendships In Adolescence, Phoebe Welcome
Honors College
Anxiety symptoms can often be experienced as a silent struggle in adolescence, as many anxious adolescents do not exhibit outward symptoms. Identifying adolescents who are struggling with subthreshold anxiety symptoms can be even more difficult. As adolescence is a time where friendships become primary sources for emotional support, youth who experience anxiety symptoms and associated distress may have trouble navigating close relationships with peers. The current study aims to investigate the relations between adolescents’ anxiety symptoms and their friendship functioning, as well as the impact of their anxiety symptoms on friends’ emotional adjustment. Data were taken from a larger project …
Prekindergarten Teachers' Experiences Using Journals To Reflect On Video Recordings Of Their Classroom Instruction: A Phenomenological Investigation, Katherine Orpilla Alvarado-Mirarchi
Prekindergarten Teachers' Experiences Using Journals To Reflect On Video Recordings Of Their Classroom Instruction: A Phenomenological Investigation, Katherine Orpilla Alvarado-Mirarchi
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore prekindergarten teachers’ experiences using journals to reflect on video recordings of their classroom instruction in an eastern Pennsylvania prekindergarten program. Three theories guided this study. Knowles, Holton, and Swanson’s (2015) theory of andragogy framed this study with a focus on the unique attributes of adult learners. Kolb’s (2015) experiential learning theory informed this study with an emphasis on the importance of workplace experiences for individual development. Dewey (1967) and Schon’s (1987) theory of reflective practice examined the process of reflective thought that is initiated by uncertainty that challenges one’s beliefs. …
A Phenomenological Exploration Of Early Childhood Educators' Perseverance Experience, Alison Lee Mellott
A Phenomenological Exploration Of Early Childhood Educators' Perseverance Experience, Alison Lee Mellott
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the experiences which motivated early childhood educators to persevere in their positions at the same early childhood education center, for five or more years, in south-central Pennsylvania. For the purpose of this research, perseverance was generally defined as continuous teaching at the same site for five or more years. The theory guiding this study was Herzberg’s (1968) motivation hygiene theory as it addressed experiences which impacted job satisfaction and dissatisfaction, directly impacting perseverance. One central research question and two supporting research questions were used to guide the study. The central …
Book It, Bullies: Using Children's Literature To Address Bullying In The Classroom, Kamryn Gottier
Book It, Bullies: Using Children's Literature To Address Bullying In The Classroom, Kamryn Gottier
Senior Honors Theses
Bullying is an ever-present issue rampant in schools and society today. It is incredibly eye-opening to consider the striking rates, harmful effects, and possible coping mechanisms associated with bullying. When considering this heavy topic from an educator’s point of view, it is critical that children’s literature be discussed as a powerful weapon to combat bullying. Educators should utilize literature to address bullying and initiate discussions concerning this challenging subject within their classes; prepare their students for being in an inclusion classroom among peers with and without disabilities; inform their students about disabilities that some of their classmates may be diagnosed …

Self-Report Qris: Challenges With Validation, Jacob A. Esplin, Brionne G. Neilson, Ann M. Berghout Austin, Alexander Fronk
Faculty Publications
Research Findings: The current study looks at the validity of a voluntary self-report Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) and the characteristics of participating childcare centers. The self-reported quality indicators are compared to external ratings of quality Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-Revised ([ECERS-R]) and correlated with variables such as size of center and number of state subsidy clients. ECERS-R scores were unrelated to capacity but significantly lower for centers with a large percentage of state-supported clients. Regarding self-reported quality, centers frequently under-reported their quality and what was claimed was not always externally validated, suggesting a self-report QRIS may not be …

Prek Special Education Inclusion Practices In Maine: An Exploratory Study Of Three Districts, Janet C. Fairman, Amy F. Johnson
Maine Education Policy Research Institute
The question of how to best meet the social and emotional needs of PreK students in Maine has been a legislative focus in recent years, including two attempts to convene legislative task forces to restructure the provision of special education services for children aged 3 to 5. This Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI) study sought to address the research gap on PreK special education inclusion. Specifically, this study sought to learn more about current practices and views regarding the inclusion of special education students in public PreK programs, what challenges schools and teachers face in serving these children, and …

Approaches To "Grow Your Own" And Dual General And Special Education Certification, Catherine Fallona, Amy F. Johnson
Maine Education Policy Research Institute
The shortage of special education teachers is a persistent problem in Maine. In addition to the shortage of individuals prepared to work as special education teachers, there is also a need to support special education students in the general education classroom. The majority of students who are identified with disabilities spend most of their time in classrooms with general education teachers. Yet, general education teachers' preparation to work with the special education students in their classrooms is limited. In order to address the need for teachers who are prepared and qualified to work with students with disabilities, the Joint Standing …
Implementation Of Response To Intervention Programs In Maine, Amy F. Johnson, Benjamin Hutchins
Implementation Of Response To Intervention Programs In Maine, Amy F. Johnson, Benjamin Hutchins
Maine Education Policy Research Institute
As a response to the 2004 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) federal statute, Maine enacted a rule requiring all schools to provide additional support to students who are not on track for meeting state learning standards beginning in 2012. One intent of the requirement was to improve student achievement, and another was to reduce the number of children who are identified as having special educational needs and thus require an Individualized Education Plan. Recent policy discussions, including the 2018 report of the Task Force to Identify Special Education Cost Drivers and Innovative Approaches to Services, have raised the question …

Learning Through Play At School: A Study Of Playful Integrated Pedagogies That Foster Children’S Holistic Skills Development In The Primary School Classroom, Rachel Parker, Bo Stjerne Thomsen
Student learning processes
This scoping study seeks to understand the role and impact of learning through play at school. The evidence supporting learning through play’s positive impact on child development is strong. Yet many education systems have reduced opportunities for playful learning and increased emphasis on didactic and structured approaches to learning for school readiness and achievement. A re-calibration is needed, as experts have established that play supports the development of early literacy and numeracy skills while also cultivating children’s social, emotional, physical and creative skills. Eight pedagogical approaches are identified, namely active learning, collaborative and cooperative learning, experiential learning, guided discovery learning, …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
The library profession is one that serves the educational system of any nation, therefore both the educational and library systems must be in nexus if effective and efficient formulation and implementation of policies will be established. The impact of the library can be felt at all levels in the education sector, starting from the grass root, that is, School libraries in primary and secondary schools to the Academic libraries in the tertiary institutions. Hence the importance of the library in the educational development of a country cannot be over-estimated.
The library policy objectives have not been difficult to identify …

Supporting Social And Emotional Learning With Little J And Big Cuz: Case Study 3: Marion Primary School, Kathryn Moyle, Kevin Mcrae
Little J and Big Cuz
Marion Primary School is located 10 kilometres south of the Adelaide CBD. There is a high level of student transience due in part to the mobility of families in short-term rental accommodation, which includes parents who are students at the nearby Flinders University. Students come from a diversity of cultural backgrounds with more than 14 countries represented in the school. In 2018, there were 21 students enrolled who identified as being of Indigenous descent. To support these Indigenous students and their families, the school has an Aboriginal Community Education Officer, Eileen Butler, known to everyone as ‘Aunty Eileen’. A team …

Little J and Big Cuz
This case study explores how the television program ‘Little J and Big Cuz’ was incorporated into the education program at Morphett Vale East Kindergarten. Morphett Vale East Kindergarten in South Australia is a government-funded kindergarten for children aged between three and five years. Little J & Big Cuz was incorporated into the education program as the screen time activity, which was then followed with discussions about each story the children had seen. The choice of episodes was linked to the learning priorities of the Kindergarten. The viewing responses of the children are discussed as well as how Little J & …
