The photograph file provides a visual record of South Carolina elementary school life in the first half of the twentieth century. The hope for good speech lies in beginning with the kindergarten, and extending on through the other elementary levels. An integrated course of study has been worked out in this state by the Washington Speech Association with that goal in mind. The task of the teacher training school is to prepare all teachers for their part in that program, no matter in what grade, or subject, or activity they may be interested. The work on the emergency nursery school program in Washington started on January 6, 1934, in the State Department of Education. The purposes of the program as outlined by the state supervisor are pertinent here.
