A Comparison Of The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test And The Wechsler Scales, Samantha Denhart

The present study was designed to determine the correlation between a commonly used cognitive ability test (i.e., Wechsler) and a verbal memory test (i.e., Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test) by analyzing archival data from a clinical sample of adults. Many researchers have continued to establish the relationship between cognitive ability, or IQ, and learning and memory skills; however, there is little research regarding when differences between IQ and memory scores are statistically significant. Results of this study indicated 17 of 20 IQ index/memory correlations were statistically significant and a series of simple regressions generated standardized residuals. In the United States, we have produced and institutionalized unreliable educational practices that limit the potential for Mexican American students K-12.

Factual examples presented in the films Walkout (2006) by Edward James Olmos, Stand and Deliver (1988) by Ramón Menéndez, Spare Parts (2015) by Sean McNamara, and Niki Caro’s McFarland, USA (2015). These films show the undeniable need for teachers willing to stand alone and go against the societal expectations placed upon Mexican American students.

Our research suggests that stereotypes have restricted and diminished the potential for Mexican American students.

Note-taking can be a powerful learning tool for students. Effective note taking asks students to condense information for recall and then expand ideas back into paraphrased full sentences to use in presentations and essays. However, note-taking is hard for students with learning disabilities.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are educational specialists who can help. This case study is a follow-up to a larger Speak and Sketch treatment study. Students were taught three learning strategies: pictography, written notes, and verbal (or whisper) rehearsal of their own spoken, well-formed sentences.

We examined the academic self-efficacy, positive subjective task values, and perceived effort costs of first-year undergraduates with (n = 168) and without (n = 314) a self-reported history of reading difficulty, and further their relations with academic achievement and satisfaction. Students with a self-reported history of reading difficulty described lower academic self-efficacy, earned lower grades, and accrued fewer credits. The groups did not differ significantly in their positive task values, effort costs, academic satisfaction, or institutional retention. Path analyses indicated that for both groups, academic self-efficacy and effort costs were predictive of first-year academic performance while intrinsic value was predictive …

Historically, African American male students have been disproportionately overrepresented in special education under the eligibility categories emotional disturbance, and behavior disorders. Additionally, African American male students with disabilities have consistently underperformed academically. The after-high-school outcomes for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families are less than desirable. The current study employed an exploratory sequential mixed methods design in order to enhance understanding of the family adaptation process during transition. First, a qualitative study was conducted in order to understand the stressors, external and internal support, coping strategies, and family adaptation outcomes during transition, from a parent’s perspective, using the ABCX model. Thirteen parents of adolescents and young adults with ASD were interviewed. These parents reported a continually high level of stress due to normative strains and ASD-related demands. They clearly …

This study was conducted in the Punjab province of Pakistan to examine the lives, aspirations, and perspectives of the largely invisible and marginalized group of older adolescent girls (ages 15–19 years) who are “not in education, employment for pay or profit, nor in marriage” (“NEEM”). The study seeks to identify the reasons for the exclusion of the NEEM girls from education and participation in paid work; explore opportunities and avenues for changing these girls’ existing opportunity structures; and probe the gender norms and behaviors underlying their marginalization to obtain insights into what it would take to change their situation.

Children with hearing impairments show balance and motor deficits mainly due to damaged or undeveloped areas of the vestibular system. The auditory sense plays a dynamic role in producing functional movements and motor coordination skills. Self-advocacy for students with disabilities was noted throughout the literature as a necessary element for student success (Brinckerhoff, 1996; Daly-Cano, Vaccaro, & Newman, 2015; Gould, 1986; Williams & Shoultz, 1982). The literature also found that self-advocacy was particular crucial as students entered higher education (English, 1997; Stodden, Conway, and Chang, 2003; Vaccaro, Daly-Cano & Newman, 2015).
