The Use Of Newspapers For Teaching Language Arts And Reading, Roy L. Gillis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this study was to determine if achievement scores in reading and language arts could be increased for students who participated in the newspapers in education program. Ninety-three seventh grade students were selected for the study; seventy-seven students completed the study, sixteen students were lost due to attrition. Two experimental groups and one control group were selected by random assignment from the seventh grade class at one school. Illinois Science Academy: A Proposal To The State Of Illinois, Corridor Partnership For Excellence In Education, Friends Of Fermilab
IMSA History
There is a widely recognized perception that the nation facing a crisis in fulfilling its needs for citizens trained in the fields of science, mathematics and technology. In particular, the State of Illinois has an obligation toward this national issue and to .its own need to develop these human resources that are so intimately coupled to economic leadership in a post-industrial society. This is a very broad challenge; here we propose to address only one important aspect: the nurturing of creative excellence in students of science and mathematics. We are concerned with the extraordinarily gifted person--the upper few tenths of …

Student Learning Objectives For A One Semester Junior High Aerospace Course, Jerry Wayne Salstrom
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project was to write a list of instructional objectives for a one semester introductory aerospace course at the junior high level. The objectives would be classified by topic for the aerospace class or for interdisciplinary use by teachers in other subject areas. While not all-encompassing, the list would be broad enough to allow some selection by individual teachers in developing their own programs.

The Effects Of Selected Motivational Rewards On Intelligence Test Performance Of Middle School Students, Janice B. Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was that of determining if intelligence quotient mean test scores of middle school students of different races, sexes, and socioeconomic classes could be significantly increased through the use of tangible and intangible rewards of money and praise. One hundred and thirty-five students from lower and middle socioeconomic classes were randomly assigned to three groups. The stratified groups, two experimental and one control, contained approximately the same numbers of male and female students. The students were identified as lower and middle socioeconomic class whites and lower socioeconomic blacks. A counterbalanced design was employed for the study. …
Language And Culture In Two Worlds: Teaching English To Hmong Refugees, Sherry Lieberman Preiss, Cammille Smith
Language And Culture In Two Worlds: Teaching English To Hmong Refugees, Sherry Lieberman Preiss, Cammille Smith
MA TESOL Collection
This project is a presentation of two curricula, one for teaching Hmong children and the other for teaching Hmong adults. The curricula provide the necessary guidelines to implement bicultural ESL instruction in a monolingual setting. Included are theoretical discussions that explain the rationale behind the format and content of each of the curricula. The curricula themselves are divided into situational units containing various linguistic and cultural components. The project stemmed from a student teaching internship in Rutland, Vermont, where the authors instructed several families (adults and children) of Hmong refugees. Although the project was primarily aimed towards teaching Hmong refugees, …

A Practical Handbook For Untrained English Teachers Of Lao Refugees In Vermont, Robert Ruud-Prestebak, Michael Mcalister Kennedy
MA TESOL Collection
This handbook is intended for use by untrained teachers or tutors in teaching beginning and intermediate English as a Second Language to adult refugees. The opening chapter provides information on the background of the Lao refugees. The novice teacher is then guided step by step through the process of designing a course syllabus, setting short-term objectives, and planning and executing individual classes. Other …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Confluent Language Arts Program, Carolyn J. Nave
The Development And Evaluation Of A Confluent Language Arts Program, Carolyn J. Nave
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The growing interest in the self-concept as a factor to learning and the idea of confluence as a possible motivator for building positive self-concepts influenced the direction and intention of this study. The problem of this study was (1) to develop a confluent language arts program designed to improve the self-concepts and reading achievement of students; and (2) to determine if there were increases in self-concept and reading achievement scores after participation in the program. The development of the confluent language arts program involved the following process: (1) theory formation to give substance and structure to the literature-language lessons; (2) …

Evidence From Science And Tradition Supporting A Two-Model (Evolution/Creation) Approach To Teaching The Origin Of Life, Robert P. Gardner
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This study gathered material presenting flood traditions in agreement with data concerning models of origins, selected material for supplementing classroom materials, and determined public opinion as how the subject of origins should be taught in public schools. Surveys recommend a two-model (evolution/creation) approach be taught within scientific limitations in public schools. Materials are available to promote this approach legally, fairly, and scientifically. Because of the evolution model's inadequacies, a reinterpretation of equivalent data allowing for catastrophic universal flood concepts is needed. Part of this reinterpretation may be supplied by the canopy model, as well as the many worldwide flood traditions. …

In this paper are discussed, first, the unique problems facing the teacher who finds himself teaching technical English. Second, ways in which that teacher can prepare himself to most effectively deal with these problems (used here in the sense of tasks to be mastered) are offered, together with practical strategies for establishing and maintaining his professional and emotional equilibrium. Finally, specific suggestions are made for presenting technical terminology to ESL students, as well as improving their general English language proficiency.
In addition, three appendices are provided. The first delineates examples of the special problems connected with teaching technical English. The …
