This study seeks to understand how one at-risk middle school in Nebraska is consistently beating eighth grade Nebraska State Writing Assessment (NESA-W) averages. The school has significant populations of Hispanic, special education, and low-income students. The study answers the following two research questions. What strategies does the at-risk school utilize to enable its students to exceed the Nebraska average on the NESA-W? What attitudes do the school’s writing teachers, administrators, students, and their parents hold about the NESA-W? Students and their parents answered a multiple-choice survey; teachers and administrators answered a longer, open-ended survey. The researcher used a combination of …

Teaching Speaking Focused On Pronunciation To Adult Esl Learners In The Us, Josephine Charlotte Petkovski May 2016

Teaching Speaking Focused On Pronunciation To Adult Esl Learners In The Us, Josephine Charlotte Petkovski

Master's Projects and Capstones

Learning the language of English for any adult English as a Second Language (ESL) learner is a challenge in and of itself. This is particularly pronounced in speaking skills. On top of that, if adult ESL learners try to learn the pronunciation of certain consonant sounds in English, where the consonant does not exist in their mother language, pronunciation can be an impeding factor to the improvement of oral skills. In fact, learning how to speak a language is one aspect of learning it, but correctly pronouncing the sounds of certain consonants is an added challenge to one's learning. Specifically, …

Creating Curriculum Cartographers To Instruct English Language Learners And Support Heritage Languages, Christopher Kaiser May 2016

Creating Curriculum Cartographers To Instruct English Language Learners And Support Heritage Languages, Christopher Kaiser

Master's Projects and Capstones

Students learning English as a second language are using the ESL teacher’s curriculum and instruction as their primary means for becoming privileged bilinguals. However, teachers are being provided textbooks with little direction as to how to build an inclusive curriculum plan that supports their English language learners in meeting their goals. As ELLs, students’ goals include reaching a certain level of proficiency in English, but more importantly, they also aim to maintain an equivalent proficiency in their primary languages as they strive for bilingualism. Teachers are often unwilling or unable to incorporate ELLs into their class curriculum, and therefore do …

Civil Aviation English For Pilots: An English Air-Ground Communication Course Based On Simulating Videos, Yuting Li May 2016

Civil Aviation English For Pilots: An English Air-Ground Communication Course Based On Simulating Videos, Yuting Li

Master's Projects and Capstones

Communication between pilots and ATCs is one crucial element that affects flight safety. As a result, with the significant increase of international air service, ICAO decided English as the mandatory language of international civil aviation in the 1950s. According to the English requirement of ICAO, an English proficiency test was required in China. However, pilot’s lack of English background and the imperfect English air-ground communication curriculum in China cause a dilemma. To solve this problem, a simulating video based English air-ground communication course with an effective language teaching approach, CLT, was developed in the project.

Culturally Aware Teaching: A Supplemental Reference Guide For Intermediate Secondary School English Language Learners, Jessica A. Mccrane

Master's Projects and Capstones

This project takes a critical eye at the cultural biases in place in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) curriculum and the New York State (NYS) English Regents examination currently being used in the state of New York. Taking into account the diverse population of students currently attending secondary school in NYS, more culturally diverse lesson activities have been created. These activities take the Whorf-Sapir Hypothesis (Whorf, Lee, Levinson, & Carroll, 2012) and interlanguage pragmatics (Martínez Flor & Alcón Soler, 2008) into consideration to help English language learners (ELLs) learn the language in a manner that lowers anxiety and is …

Education Sciences and Professional Programs Faculty Works

In 2013, Spencer, Goldstein, Sherman, et al. reported the promising effects of a supplemental, technology-assisted, storybook intervention (Tier 2) containing embedded instruction targeting the oral language learning of preschool children at risk for delays. We sought to advance knowledge of the intervention by replicating it in a new sample and examining children's responses to the narrator's instructional prompts and associations with learning outcomes. Results indicated that children were highly successful in responding with the narrator's task-management prompts (i.e., "turn the page"), particularly after the first book. Children were much less proficient in correctly responding to the narrator's word-teaching prompts (i.e., …

Reflect & Connect- Helping Students Make The Most Of Their Study Abroad Experience, Rachael L. Dean May 2016

Reflect & Connect- Helping Students Make The Most Of Their Study Abroad Experience, Rachael L. Dean

Capstone Collection

In our world of internationalization and global networking, students that study abroad have a definite advantage when transitioning into the professional world after graduating college. However, when asked, many have a difficult time articulating and marketing their international experience. When transitioning back to the United States and campus culture, students also go through varying degrees of reverse culture shock. They want to talk about their experience and share their newfound love of another culture, however many run into disinterested friends and glossy eyes.

The Education Abroad office at Central Palm International University is looking to expand their outreach and commitment …

The Teaching Alliance As A Framework For Advancing A Relationally Oriented And Jesuit Inspired Teaching And Research Agenda, Fernando Estrada May 2016

The Teaching Alliance As A Framework For Advancing A Relationally Oriented And Jesuit Inspired Teaching And Research Agenda, Fernando Estrada

Journal of Catholic Education

While the interpersonal relationship between the student and teacher is important for learning, the quality of the student-teacher relationship in higher education and its effects on learning is understudied. Striving to enliven this area of study is the concept of the teaching alliance as understood through Jesuit tradition. The alliance defines the quality of the student-teacher relationship as the degree of shared agreement over the goals and tasks of a course, as well as the presence of a positive interpersonal bond. Through an Ignatian lens, this framework brings to focus themes in teaching that can bolster learning. An illustrative example …

Bearers Of Diverse Ecclesiologies: Imagining Catholic School Students As Informing A Broader Articulation Of Catholic School Aims, Graham P. Mcdonough

Journal of Catholic Education

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, although not exhaustive, picture of the kinds of real concerns and concurrently inferred ecclesiological perspectives practicing Catholic students have. It reports findings from an interview study with 16 students at a private Catholic high school in Canada who self-identify as Catholic in order to demonstrate that it is in a Catholic school’s best interest not to rely on narrow or singular definitions of Catholic identity, especially insofar as these are tied to minimal and external markers of institutional affiliation. While the sample’s size and particularity do not generalizing to a …

The first GAISE College Report came out in 2005. Over the past ten years our discipline has changed in many ways, including but not limited to what type of data is easily available, the technology that we use, as well as how we teach students. In this presentation we will briefly start with how the new GAISE 2016 guidelines and goals have changed, including the two new emphases of statistical thinking: giving students experience with multivariable thinking and with the investigative process. So how do you start to implement these new ideas? In this presentation, we will demonstrate an activity …

Differences In Remedial Pedagogy Approaches Between Teachers And Students, Jessica Accurso-Salguero May 2016

Differences In Remedial Pedagogy Approaches Between Teachers And Students, Jessica Accurso-Salguero

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study determined and assessed the perceptions of both students and teachers on the best approaches to remedial education. Although much of the research in the remedial education field has used quantitative approaches to determine the impact of taking remedial classes on academic outcomes, qualitative research has been less extensively used but offers a better understanding of why students do not remediate successfully. While remedial programs work well when students successfully complete remedial courses, students often fail to complete them. Therefore, it is important to understand why remedial programs sometimes succeed but so often fail. Based on the Grubb and …

Hereisthefamilymotherfatherdickandjane: An Analysis Of Parenting And The Dick And Jane Readers In Morrison’S The Bluest Eye, Rachel Roseman

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

First-generation college student Rachel Roseman has found the American educational and cultural systems to privilege the white, upper to middle classes. As Toni Morrison demonstrates in The Bluest Eye, those who do not fit this mold often lack educational support and have to learn how to navigate cultural systems on their own. Unlike the character of Pecola, who features in the following essay, Roseman had a strong community and family who supported her decision to attend college and, as a result, achieved success.
