A Case Study Of Rti Data Teams, William Lee Washington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative case study addressed the persistent achievement gaps in annual measurable objectives (AMO) data at a public rural elementary school in the Mideast United States. Response to intervention (RTI) data teams from 2010 did not produce expected student gains after 5 years of implementation in the school under study. Based on Mandinach and Jackson's data-driven decision making conceptual framework, the purpose of this study was to examine the work of the RTI data teams as they attempted to improve student learning and close achievement gaps. A purposeful sample of 13 staff members involved in the RTI implementation process was …
The Effects Of A Concept-Based Curriculum On Nursing Students' Nclex-Rn Exam Scores, Patricia Allen Edwards
The Effects Of A Concept-Based Curriculum On Nursing Students' Nclex-Rn Exam Scores, Patricia Allen Edwards
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Institute of Medicine and the National League of Nursing have called for curricular reform that promotes high first-time pass rates on the National Counsel of Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). A campus in the southeastern region of the United States implemented a concept-based curriculum; however, the effect on the first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates was unknown. The purpose of this comparative study was to determine if the concept-based curriculum improved student scores on the NCLEX-RN. Dreyfus' model of learning guided this study because of the andragogy tenets, which in turn supported the concept-based curricula. The research questions examined the …

Elementary School Teacher Perceptions Of Using Formative Strategies To Improve Instruction, Deborah Peterson Bennett
Elementary School Teacher Perceptions Of Using Formative Strategies To Improve Instruction, Deborah Peterson Bennett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Standardized test data from a southern suburban elementary school showed lagging student scores behind those of students from similar settings. These scores suggested a disconnection between teachers' understanding of and practice in formative assessment. Bloom's revised taxonomy, backward design planning theory, and differentiated learning theory guided this study, which focused on how elementary teachers use formative strategies in the classroom to inform instruction. Data collected through face-to-face interviews from 10 teachers were transcribed and organized in codes and themes. Member checks were then used to ensure credibility of interpretations. The key results showed that these 10 teachers used many formative …

Elementary (K-5) Teachers' Perceptions Of Differentiated Instruction, Christopher Maddox
Elementary (K-5) Teachers' Perceptions Of Differentiated Instruction, Christopher Maddox
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Differentiated instruction is a pedagogical method used by classroom teachers to enhance student learning. Researchers have described how students benefit from differentiated lessons, but have not explored the relationship between teachers' perceptions of differentiation and student success. This gap is problematic because teachers' instruction directly affects student achievement. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore how elementary (K-5) teachers define, familiarize, use, and perceive differentiation. The conceptual framework was rooted from a synthesis of ideas found in current refereed literature, and the educational concepts and constructionist theories of Piaget and Vygotsky. Purposeful sampling identified 12 participants for …

Using Interculturally Aware Teaching Methods (In Revisiting The Characteristics Of Effective Education), Steven K. Homer
Faculty Book Display Case
Teaching interculturally was not addressed in BEST PRACTICES FOR LEGAL EDUCATION. Legal scholars have studied how legal pedagogy both reflects the values and approaches of dominant groups within legal academia (i.e., privileged white men), and also how these approaches to teaching can alienate students — such as women, students of color, and gender and sexually diverse students, among others — who do not share all of the dominant group’s traits. However, more research is required to help law teachers fully understand the extent to which the structures of legal education affect non-dominant groups and how legal education may be changed …
