G92-1123 Spinach And Swiss Chard, Laurie Hodges
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This is a guide to the growing, harvesting and use of spinach and swiss chard.
Spinach
Spinach is a cool season crop and belongs to the goosefoot family (Chenopodiaceae), along with Swiss chard and beets. Spinach is low in calories. It is a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and minerals, especially iron. After washing the leaves, cook them in a covered pan using only the water clinging to the leaves. After cooking, add salt and butter, vinegar, or mustard for added flavor. Spinach may be prepared in a souffle, creamed soup, or used raw in salads.

G92-1078 Work And Family: Today's Juggling Act, Hrebert G. Lingren
G92-1078 Work And Family: Today's Juggling Act, Hrebert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Working families are under stress as they try to balance demands of job, children and spouse. Strategies are needed to prevent stress overload and burnout.
Over the past 25 years, women's and men's roles have changed dramatically. Today's women are better educated, have better paying jobs and are having fewer children. Women represent 45 percent of the labor force, nearly 80 percent work outside the home and 75 percent of mothers of young children are employed.
As women have entered and stayed in the work force in ever-increasing numbers, the dual-earner family has emerged. Married couple earners comprise more than …

In the 1990s, people live longer, they postpone marriage, more children are living at home to go to college, and an increasing number of adult children are returning home after a divorce or loss of job. Consequently, larger …

A major challenge in this stress-filled world of today is to make the stress in your life work for you instead of against you.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides a worksheet to organize your forage inventory and properly allocate forages of different qualities to various groups of cows.
Importance of Forage Quality
Properly feeding high quality forage to the dairy herd improves the profitability of the dairy enterprise. A dairy herd demonstration program involving 28 herds in Nebraska illustrated the importance of feeding high quality forage. Herds which improved forage quality over the two-year program produced 30 percent more milk yearly, with over 8 percent less feed cost compared with those herds that failed to feed high quality forage. University of Wisconsin research indicates maximum milk …

G92-1098 Cultivators For Conservation Tillage, Robert D. Grisso, Paul J. Jasa
G92-1098 Cultivators For Conservation Tillage, Robert D. Grisso, Paul J. Jasa
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Cultivating residue-covered fields and ridge-till considerations are among the topics covered here.
In any conventional, conservation or no-tillage planting system, crop cultivation can be an excellent method of weed control. Cultivators used in residue-covered fields must allow residue to flow through the implement without clogging.
Extra penetration force may be required to cultivate no-till fields as compared to tilled fields. While many high-clearance cultivators are designed to handle conservation tillage conditions, some older cultivators can be modified to work in residue-covered fields when residue flow and soil penetration are maintained.
Combining mechanical and chemical weed control is economical and effective …

Ec92-270 Conducting Pig Feed Trials On The Farm, Duane Reese, Walter W. Stroup
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The purpose of this publication is to provide fundamental information that must be understood before attempting to conduct a feed trial. The concepts and procedures described here are valid for most situations involving a comparison of two feeds. Any trial involving more than two feeds raises issues that are beyond the scope of this publication. Those issues are covered in university statistics courses on design and analysis of experiments.
We suggest that pork producers adopt a "best cost" feeding program tailored to the operation and based on sound nutritional principles. Feed cost per pound of gain is a major item …

Squash was among the first vegetables to be planted in Nebraska.
These crops can be used in many ways. The quick-growing, tender-skinned summer squash, when harvested and used while still immature, are delicious either steamed and buttered or sliced and …

2: "The Mapping Of Chromosome 16", Norman A. Doggett, Raymond L. Stallings, Carl E. Hildebrand, Robert K. Moyzis
Genomics: Past & Future
Human chromosome 16 is the main focus of the mapping efforts at Los Alamos. The large photomicrograph on these opening pages illustrates the starting point for those mapping efforts, the evaluation of our chromosome-16-specific library of cloned fragments. Among the 23 pairs of human chromosomes, one pair, chromosome 16, is identified by fluorescence in-situ hybridization. Thousands of yellow fluorescent probes derived from the clone library have hybridized to both copies of chromosome 16. The high density and uniform coverage of the fluorescent signals were a strong indication that we could use the library to construct a map of overlapping cloned …
