Writing Creatively In First Grade, Susan Grant Raye Jan 1984

Writing Creatively In First Grade, Susan Grant Raye

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Learning to write their own words increases students' success in learning to read, provides practice in thinking skills, increases their self-concept and provides early positive attitudes about writing.

However, most writing done in first grade classrooms today consists mainly of copying from the blackboard. This is a tedious and boring task for first graders, and gives them bad attitudes about writing as they begin their school careers. Many teachers don't require young students to write their own words because of the students' inability to spell words and form grammatically correct sentences. However, if a teacher is accepting of the students' …

Interview With Nancy Topping Bazin: "Old Dominion University: Affirmative Action In The Curriculum", Peggy Mcintosh Oct 1981

Interview With Nancy Topping Bazin: "Old Dominion University: Affirmative Action In The Curriculum", Peggy Mcintosh

Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications

Believing that the concept of affirmative action should extend to the curriculum, Nancy Topping Bazin, director of the Old Dominion University (ODU) Women's Studies Program, has strived for a change in the school's mission statement to reflect this conviction. If we have a concensus that equality is a good thing," says Bazin, "then the commitment to the philosophical principle of equality should automatically transfer to the curriculum. We should hire people who are experts in women's, black, and third world studies who can integrate their research into the various departments and help other people change their courses."

English Through Drama: Rationale And Description Of Materials Developed In An Esl Drama Project In Israel, Enid Carol Kumin

MA TESOL Collection

This paper examines the rationale and design of a series of skits which three others and I wrote and presented in Israel during the course of an "English-through-drama" program which we conducted in the public school system. The paper presents one skit, used for fourth - sixth grades, as an example of the work we produced and as a basis for clarifying the way our teaching assumptions and objectives were reflected in our materials. The skits are of interest because of the way in which they integrate various drama techniques to meet both affective and linguistic needs in the classroom, …

Culture-Based Humanities Units, Nancy Hogan Jan 1981

Culture-Based Humanities Units, Nancy Hogan

Masters Theses

My personal goal and purpose is to learn what work and time is involved in creating humanities activities for the classroom. I feel units such as this should be made available to teachers to provide them with ideas, materials, and the incentive to teach interrelated arts. Portions of this project could also be supplemental to World History, Literature, or Social Studies classes.

There is a need for and current trend toward combining the arts in higher education that should be circulated at a much more accelerated rate to the schools of the area. My observations in working with students indicate …
