Unfreezing Language: A Decolonial Reframing Of Translanguaging Pedagogies In English As A New Language & Dual Language Bilingual Education Settings, Cristian R. Solorza
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This qualitative multi-case study examines how elementary teachers in English as a New Language (ENL) and Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) settings conceptualize, implement, and reflect upon translanguaging pedagogies, with particular attention to translanguaging rings as tools for language differentiation. Grounded in a rearticulation of language as a dynamic, socially, politically, and historically constructed subject and object, this study challenges monoglossic ideologies that position named languages as bounded systems at the center of language education. Instead, it centers students’ lived, embodied, and agentive language practices as foundational to language learning and to their participation as knowledge producers in ENL and …

Bilingual Teacher Advocacy, Agency, And Leadership: A Model For Teacher Education And Professional Development, Grace Jue Yeon Kim, Zhenjie Weng, Jingyi Zhu
Faculty Journal Articles
Research has examined bilingual teachers’ work and their
experiences through the theoretical lens of teacher advocacy,
teacher agency, and teacher leadership. This research synthesis
analyzes the current research on the three frameworks in bilingual
education and examines how they intersect. Bilingual teachers
advocated for educational change to address the needs of
emergent bilinguals. Despite various context-specific constraints,
bilingual teachers agentively created bilingual spaces for
linguistically diverse students. Furthermore, bilingual teachers
actively took up leadership roles, demonstrated increased
consciousness, and developed leadership identities. Through this
exploration, this paper proposes a model that integrates the three
frameworks for bilingual teacher education and …
Bilingualism Matters: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of California Language Policy, Benjamin V. Roath
Bilingualism Matters: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of California Language Policy, Benjamin V. Roath
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In June 1998, California voters passed Proposition 227, a ballot initiative mandating that all public school instruction be conducted in English, with over 61% approval. This policy imposed additional challenges on students with limited English proficiency (LEP), many of whom are immigrants or children of immigrants. At the margins of these political and educational agendas lies the issue of bilingual education. This study examines the role of bilingual education in multilingual contexts and critiques the continued reliance on monolingual frameworks that marginalize linguistic diversity. Focusing on Proposition 227 (1998) and its repeal through Proposition 58 (2016), the research explores shifting …

Although long-standing research has documented the many benefits of dual language (DL) education programs in the K-12 setting, there are few studies on the impact of DL in higher education. This study analyzes DL education at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) where certain classes are taught in Spanish or bilingually across diverse disciplines. In this mixed methods research study, we examine (1) how enrollment in these classes impacts student success through an analysis of cumulative grade point averages, retention, and time to degree and (2) how students perceive these classes through an analysis of course evaluations and surveys responses from current …

Decidiendo Lo Mejor Para Su Educación: Immigrant Latine Madres At The Intersection Of Confianza, Ideology, And The Illusion Of Choice, Emmeline Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative multiple case study examined the decision-making processes of immigrant Latine caregivers selecting schools and language programs for their children classified as Multilingual Learners (MLLs) in New York City. Although policy frameworks position caregivers as central decision-makers, bilingual program access remains limited, especially in charter schools, and families must navigate language ideologies that privilege English as the safest educational pathway. Ten immigrant Latine participants, nine mothers and one grandmother, whose children attended traditional or charter elementary schools in one NYC district, shared their experiences through semi-structured interviews conducted in Spanish. Data were analyzed through iterative coding and thematic analysis …

Bilingual teachers enact agency as language policymakers and advocate for
students in providing holistic support. This ethnographic study examines 2nd
and 4th grade Spanish-English dual language bilingual education teachers’
agentive actions in implementing pedagogical strategies informed by translanguaging
and funds of knowledge during blended learning in 2021. The
findings revealed that the teachers identified challenges and posed questions
as they transitioned to blended learning for the first time. They celebrated
the positives of returning to in-person schooling, agentively
navigated the new environment, and provided holistic support for the
students. The teachers also supported emergent bilingual students’ language
and content learning …

Emergent Bilingual Educators’ Viewpoint Of Biliteracy Spaces: Building Capacity For Language Preservation And Development, Maria A. Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the perspectives of emergent bilingual (EB) educators regarding the value of learning two languages simultaneously for EBs at the elementary level in Texas. The problem examined was that EBs were losing their primary language while acquiring English. More EBs were entering bilingual programs with no language dominance or mixed language dominance, and researchers had explored this issue from various perspectives, including teacher language ideologies and assessment practices based on monolingual standards. This inductive qualitative case study aimed to identify what educators perceived as the benefits of bilingual education in primary classrooms where students learned two languages simultaneously. …

Seeing The Bigger Picture: A Comparative Approach To English Language Learner Policy And Practice In Mississippi, Anne Haughton
Honors Theses
As the number of English Language Learners (ELLs) in Mississippi’s public schools continues to rise, the state’s current systems of support have been lagging. This thesis examines how English Language Learners (ELLs) are supported in three states with distinct policies and programs: California, Texas, and Arizona. Then, these approaches are compared to the current situation in Mississippi. Using public education policies, state department guidelines, and existing research on instructional models, the study highlights key differences in program options, teacher preparation, and graduation outcomes in each state. The findings show that while states like California and Texas have invested in bilingualism …

Researchers have analyzed the results of the What’s Hot, What’s Not in Literacy surveys over the past two decades to increase literacy priorities and possible impacts. However, there is a lack of research in the field of bilingual education. Topics such as bilingualism, multiculturalism, social justice, biliteracy, minority representation, family engagement, culturally responsive pedagogy, college readiness, and 21st-century skills have not been as highly rated as in the past, yet these should warrant more attention to assist bilingual students better. The purpose of this study was to describe the current trending topics in bilingual education. Bilingual experts, teachers, and students …

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
The scope and breadth of the content of college courses is often limited to the students who attend them. This is particularly true regarding theoretical courses, such as those involving theories and practices related to bilingual education. A new podcast created by an instructor of such a course aims to expand the reach of the course content to other students, educators, and the general public, who may not have taken such courses. This opinion piece addresses how the podcast came into being, as well as its current and future goals.
Impact Of A Two-Way Dual Language Program On English-Dominant And Spanish-Dominant Elementary School Students’ Academic Achievement In A High-Density Hispanic Area: A Quantitative Longitudinal Study, Michael Heidelberg
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study explored the long-term academic impact of Two-Way Dual Language (TWDL) programs on both English-dominant and Spanish-dominant Hispanic students in a high-density Hispanic area. Specifically, it compared their academic performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math over a 3-year period to that of students enrolled in traditional English-only General programs and Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) programs. One key focus of this research was examining whether TWDL programs can maintain their effectiveness when the traditional 50:50 balance of native English speakers (NES) and minority language speakers is not met, substituting English-dominant Hispanic students for NES. The findings demonstrated that …

Exploring Language Ideologies: Integrating Digital And Computational Literacies In Bilingual Teacher Education, Jessica Velez Tello, Veronica Paredes
Publications and Research
This research takes place in a graduate online course, part of a teacher education program leading to bilingual certification in the United States. As teacher educators, the authors noticed that bilingual teachers are seldom given the time to deeply reflect on themselves and how their identities and lived experiences may affect their instructional pedagogy for linguistically diverse students. To provide students with the digital space to rethink their design choices before moving to instructional practice, the authors intentionally used collaborative methodology to guide course design to 1) weave content knowledge with computational and digital literacies and 2) explore the intersections …

The Role Of Language Ideologies In Curriculum Design: Possibilities In Computational And Digital Literacies Integration In Teacher Education, Jessica Velez Tello
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Literacy and language are linked in its usage, perception, and practice. As new forms of engaging with literacy are explored, digital practices and tools are being employed as useful supports for students and their language practices (García et al., 2017). As emerging technologies are further introduced in educational spaces, education programs have a role in shaping how computational and digital literacies (CDLs) are integrated and how teacher candidates and teachers learn about them, especially those who are being trained to become bilingual teachers or will inevitably work with emergent bilinguals and linguistically diverse learners[1], as the intersections between …

In this paper we identify, name, and operationalize six borders typically found in school settings that include dual language classrooms: bordered languages, knowledge, content areas, bodies, selves, and teachers. We identify these borders as a point of departure to show an example of how a two-way dual language classroom operated through a form of border-crossing pedagogy that respects children and reveals authentic multilingual learning. We use this example to propose that, if dual language classrooms are to truly respect racially and linguistically marginalized students, educators must engage in a practice of protest and refusal toward curricular and social violence.

As teacher education programs encourage more candidates to pursue bilingual certification, a need exists to improve the ways that preservice teachers (PSTs) are prepared to teach in bilingual classrooms. Research suggests the importance of preparing PSTs in the area of linguistic ideological clarity. Scholars define ideological clarity as an ongoing process through which individuals can critically consider their ideological orientations as well as dominant ideologies that favor those in power, with an aim of becoming agents of change through this process (Alfaro & Bartolomé, 2017). This case study sought to understand the opportunities that bilingual PSTs have to develop ideological …

This research was guided by two autoethnographic questions, namely: How does autoethnography enable understanding of the needs of emergent bilinguals in the sociopolitical context of local and federal language policies in the United States? As well as extended by the following ancillary questions: a. What are the patterns and variations that emerge from journal entries crafted by the author of this study? And b. What are the patterns and variations that emerge from state and national news pieces between the years 2015 and 2020?
This narrative serves not only to present the challenges encountered within the field of multicultural education …
Developing Hispanic Pre-Service Elementary Bilingual Teachers’ Cultural Competence And Teacher Identity Through Mixed Reality Simulation, Yajaira A. Flores
Developing Hispanic Pre-Service Elementary Bilingual Teachers’ Cultural Competence And Teacher Identity Through Mixed Reality Simulation, Yajaira A. Flores
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the constant migration of diverse populations, multicultural communities are developing across North America. As a result, multi-culturally diverse classrooms are multiplying (Allen et al., 2017). Our pre-service teachers must be multi-culturally prepared to enter diverse classrooms and effectively teach students without implicit bias (Ladson-Billings, 1995; Banks, 2010; Paris, 2017). Pre-service teachers' identity and cultural competence should be prioritized in teacher preparation programs. Using Latino/a Critical Race Theory (LatCrit), Practice-Based Learning, and Teacher Identity as conceptual frameworks, this study will answer how Mixed Reality Simulation (MRS) may be used as a teacher preparation tool (Aguilar & Flores, 2022) to …

In Texas and throughout the United States, the increasing linguistic diversity within educational settings necessitates the expansion of bilingual and ESL programs. Approximately 5 million school-age children in the U.S. are identified as English learners, and many more are raised in non-English-speaking households. This represents about one-quarter of all K-12 students in the U.S., amounting to nearly 18 million children, most of whom have immigrant parents (Mitchell, 2020a). The urgency to address their needs is amplified by concerns that prolonged school closures could worsen the challenges faced by this demographic, which already includes heightened risks of homelessness, hunger, and educational …

Bilingual Students' Language Use, Identity, And Investment In Dual Language Classrooms, Stephanie Eller
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative multi-case study examined the co-construction of elementary dual language students’ language use and identity to understand how five individual students positioned themselves as bilingual individuals as well as how this relates to their investment in the language-learning process. This study also investigated the influence of translanguaging on student language use and identity expression. The classroom investment of the students was explored through the students’ identity expression, ideology and beliefs, and through forms of capital in which students expressed importance. Framed by a dynamic understanding of both language and identity, as well as investment theory, this study collected data …
Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez
Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez
International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest
This chapter unearths some of the diverse attitudes towards Spanish of a third-generation child in Los Angeles (L.A.), California, her family members, and school personnel. L.A. is a tension-ridden contact zone (Pratt, 1991) where Spanish has traditionally been subjugated and is still a lesser-taught language (LTL) despite decades of research showing that bilingual education positively impacts student attitudes (Potowski & Muñoz-Basols, 2020). Lack of continuity (Caloi & Torregrossa, 2021) in formal instruction and inconsistent heritage Spanish use in the home may entail divergent attitudes towards Spanish, possibly hindering multigenerational transmission. Decades-long turbulent California language policies (CLP) (Macias, 2001) have consistently …

A Strategic Exploration Of Bilingual Education Policy: An Interpretive Policy Analysis, Abbie Strunc, Helen Berg, Amber J. Godwin
School Leadership Review
Language diversity in the United States has always been part of its history, yet policy and funding have not always promoted bilingualism or multiculturalism. Throughout the history of bilingual education, administrators, politicians, and policymakers have changed their preferences and practices in response to trends and ideological shifts (Crawford, 2004). Even with a plethora of research regarding the benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy in support of bilingual education (Baker, 201; Camilleri, 1996; Fuh Suh, 2022; Goodman, & Tastanbek, 2021; McCarty, 1980), the literature on bilingual policy exclusively focuses on the use of two languages as languages of instruction with the sole …

As the Latinx population in the United States continues to rise, La Escuela SMART Academy — a bicultural school in Toledo, Ohio — serves as just one example of how educational systems are seeking to cater to their respective needs. Previous research provides us with information explaining why bilingual education is valuable and worthy of promotion — including cognitive, cultural, linguistic, and economic benefits — as well as best practices. Using this information, I create a set of conditions that, when met, have the best potential of yielding an effective bilingual institution. In order to determine where La Escuela SMART …
