The assumption that all Asians are model minorities is incorrect. The largest group of Asian American people is comprised of Filipino people followed closely by Chinese people; although Filipino people comprise the largest population, they lag behind Chinese and other Asian American groups with respect to academic achievement. Hence, Filipino American people are underrepresented as educational leaders in K–12 public schools in California. It will also show that Tapa and the designs/motifs found within tapa are often shared cultural designs across the Pacific. One young Mexican woman, Anay Palomeque de Carrillo, rode the tumultuous wave of these economic activities from her rural home in tropical southern Mexico to the factories in the harsh desert lands of Ciudad Juárez during the early years of the city’s notorious violence.

The struggle between homogeneity and difference that is so characteristic of European communal identity is expressed in the five European picturebooks analyzed here, as a negotiation of identity. Identity, or the self, is not taken for granted by the anthropomorphic animal protagonists. In this sense, all five heroes are to an extent actively and diversely constructed social selves: they view the self not just as something we are, but as an object we actively construct and live by, taking up or resisting the varied ways in which others perceive their identity.

This study examines the educational persistence of women of African descent (WOAD) in pursuit of a doctorate degree at universities in the southeastern United States. WOAD are women of African ancestry born outside the African continent. These women are heirs to an inner dogged determination and spirit to survive despite all odds (Pulliam, 2003, p. 337).This study used Ellis’s (1997) Three Stages for Graduate Student Development as the conceptual framework to examine the persistent strategies used by these women to persist to the completion of their studies.

The authors conducted a qualitative study in order to understand the preconceptions novice TESOL teachers might have about teaching English language. Long interviews were conducted with nine students (six native English Speakers and three non-native speakers (NNS)) enrolled in one of two courses offered in a TESOL teacher education program. None of the participants had experience as an in-service teacher. Inductive analysis of tape transcripts suggested the presence of several conceptual themes discussed in the teacher thinking literature. Findings suggest that novice TESOL teachers, like their more experienced counterparts, have a system of metaphors to conceptualize teaching. The apprenticeship of …

The transference of classic characters across the multilingual literary universe is a widespread phenomenon in international children’s literature. Characters from classic works transgress national and cultural boundaries, currying with them their national identities or forming new identities, adjusting to their new surroundings. As they engage in fresh metafi ctional adventures, their intertextual journeys (as described by Umberto Eco), and their multiple transformations, often serve national ideologies within the cultures that receive them; authors tend to invest national and cultural capital on these characters’ classic status.
