Enabling Learning : The Crucial Work Of School Leaders, Jean Russell

Educational leadership

This paper addresses several fundamental questions. What are the most important, most highly valued and most powerful learning outcomes for students? What do students tell us about their experience of school, about the things that enhance or diminish their involvement in learning? What changes in teaching and learning approaches would enhance students' engagement in learning and help achieve the desired learning outcomes? Are school leaders seen by teachers to be important to the process of bringing about change in teaching practices? The paper argues that, amidst the complexity that constitutes school life, school leaders can enable learning through the maintenance …

Singing The Same Tune: Principals' And School Board Members' Perceptions Of The Superintendent's Role As Instructional Leader, George J. Petersen

Graduate Studies in Education

Understanding the multifaceted roles and responsibilities of the district superintendent as an instructional leader has proved to be a long-standing and sometimes elusive endeavor. In spite of the consistency of research findings, instructional leadership remains one of the more controversial characteristics associated with the examination of the district superintendent. The findings reported here are part of a larger study on the role and responsibilities of the superintendent as an instructional leader. Specifically, this investigation examined the covariance between school principals' and school board members' views of the instructional leadership of the district superintendent. Results from this correlational and regression analysis …

Evaluation Of U.S. Army Recruiters’ Satisfaction With Basic Recruiter Training And Their Challenges Encountering Today’S Youth Market, Richard E. Talley Colonel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Despite the U.S. Army's recent success in recruiting, recruiters have difficulties in communicating with and attracting today's youth to Army service. Army officials reiterate that complacency about recent recruiting figures is misguided, and that, without the Army consistently meeting recruitment quotas, national security could be unduly threatened. The purposes of this study were to evaluate Army recruiters' satisfaction with their basic training course and its application to performance standards, to evaluate challenges recruiters face in attracting today's youth by development and administration of a survey instrument, and to report recommendations for improving the training course and remedying recruiters' difficulties in …

No performance checklist existed within the Crafton Hills College paramedic program that tracks and documents the clinical and field exposures of the graduates that includes national, state, and local requirements. The purpose of this study was to develop, with plans to implement and evaluate, a performance checklist specific to …

Means And Ends Of The Andrews University Leadership Program: A Study Of Its Critical Components And Outcomes As They Relate To The Mission Statement, José A. Alaby

Dissertations

Problem. The history of education shows tensions between its means and ends. Tensions became more apparent in contemporary Christian educational institutions. The Leadership Program (LP) of Andrews University was developed as an alternative and innovative means of delivering graduate education with a defined mission. It is job-embedded-theory and practice are united in the participants' workplaces, where they show their competency in 20 areas. It stresses the importance of the individuality of the participant in the development of a teaching/learning community. Yet, the dialectical relationship of the LP's ends and means has not been systematically studied in light of its …

An Evaluation Of The Professional Development Of Credentialed Ministers Of The Assemblies Of God In Victoria, Australia, Brendan Roach

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The Assemblies of God (AOG) in Victoria is a diverse fellowship of Churches, ministers, and non-Church organizations. The fellowship has been growing in numbers and diversity significantly over the last 20 years. This diversity has made it increasingly difficult to run training programs that are relevant to individual needs. The problem is that the perceived professional development needs of AOG in Victoria ministers are unknown. It is also unknown if past professional development programs have met the perceived needs of the ministers.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived needs of credentialed ministers of the AOG in …

An Analysis Of Key Leadership Behaviors Of The Principal In A High -Performing Elementary School Serving Mexican American Children In South Texas, Alda T. Benavides May 2001

An Analysis Of Key Leadership Behaviors Of The Principal In A High -Performing Elementary School Serving Mexican American Children In South Texas, Alda T. Benavides

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study is based on the theoretical framework that defines leadership as an influence process, one that depends on the extent to which people eventually perceive leadership as a quality someone possesses and as a result of that perception, consent to be led (Greenfield, 1998). Leadership is the process of being perceived as a leader (Lord and Maher, 1993). Doing good work at one's school and being seen to do such work is likely to be the most powerful strategy for positively influencing teachers' perceptions of one's leadership. This study expands on the theory that it is what you do …

Development Of A Strategic Plan To Integrate Leadership And Management Concepts Throughout Frankford Hospital School Of Nursing Curriculum With Plans For Implementation And Evaluation, Jo Ann Runewicz

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem is that a gap exists between the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing (FHSN) curriculum design, increased National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) passing standards, and the revised NCLEX-RN examination that has integrated leadership and management concepts. The FHSN curriculum design does not adequately prepare students to address leadership and management concepts that are being tested on the NCLEX-RN.

The purpose of this project was to develop a strategic plan to integrate leadership and management concepts throughout the FHSN curriculum. A plan for implementation and evaluation was also developed. The following five research questions were addressed: (1) …

Development Of A Five Year Plan To Synchronize The Funding Of Existing Programs With Visionary Initiatives Of The Moody Bible Institute, Richard R. Epps

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Moody Bible Institute (MBI) is an 115-year-old institution located in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to its fully accredited vocational ministry focused educational programs, MBI has extensive broadcasting and publishing enterprises. MBI is heavily dependent on donations for its continued existence and expansion. The problem was that with a finite amount of financial resources, competition arises between the demands for funding existing core programs and the allocation of funds for visionary initiatives related to the expansion of education, broadcasting, and publishing. The purpose of this study was the development of a five-year plan that will synchronize the funding of existing programs …

The Development Of A Strategic Continuous Improvement Process Implementation Guide For The North Carolina Department Of Administration, George E. Millsaps Jr. Jan 2001

The Development Of A Strategic Continuous Improvement Process Implementation Guide For The North Carolina Department Of Administration, George E. Millsaps Jr.

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The North Carolina Department of Administration (DOA) is under pressure by the North Carolina legislature and governor's office to increase both the quality of services provided, and decrease the cost of providing services. The pressure is on mission expansion, reduction in the number of positions, and limiting budgetary growth primarily to cost of living increases in salary.

The leadership of the department knows of no other reasonable way to respond to these pressures except through the implementation of continuous improvement or total quality management (TQM). However, the department has attempted to implement quality initiatives four times in the past with …

Development Of A Leadership Development Program At The Dallas Market Center With A Plan For Implementation, Rudy Sanchez

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The Dallas Market Center (DMC) does not have a formal program to develop its employees into leadership roles. Therefore, the Dallas Market Center is at risk of losing its competitive advantage to other wholesale merchandise marts. Consequently, the purpose of this project was to design a leadership development program for the Dallas Market Center to be offered to employees in an effort to develop leadership skills and/or competencies that will in turn benefit DMC.

There were four research questions to be investigated. First, "What are the core competencies needed to be developed within the DMC leadership program?" Second, "What are …
