Recent research on problem solving explores its potential as a pedagogical practice. This emphasis rejuvenates the interest in problem solving as a learning activity. This paper presents the practice of using a selected problem together with its variants in a single lesson. The practice was implemented in middle school classroom settings with gifted students and with mixed ability students as well as in teacher education classrooms. Experiences from practice are used to illustrate that the use of a set of closely related problems is likely to make students more eager to share their solutions, to generate several solution strategies, and …

Education Of Mathematically Talented Students In Hungary, Julianna Connelly Stockton
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Hungary is famous for its production of large numbers of highly talented mathematicians and physicists. This study explores the Hungarian system for educating mathematically talented secondary school students with the goal of identifying successful features that may be applicable to education in the United States. Highlights of the Hungarian approach include an emphasis on problem solving, problem posing, detailed explanation or proof for solutions, and development of mathematical creativity through the search for multiple solution paths.

School Mathematics Education In Uganda: Its Successes And Its Failures, Immaculate Kizito Namukasa, Madge Quinn, Janet Kaahwa
School Mathematics Education In Uganda: Its Successes And Its Failures, Immaculate Kizito Namukasa, Madge Quinn, Janet Kaahwa
Education Publications
This paper examines the character of school mathematics education in Uganda. It focuses on its successes, failures and its history. The methodology involved analyzing Ugandan curriculum documents and teaching resources. The analysis is through a comparative and post-colonial approach. The analysis reveals that Ugandan mathematics education is largely not influenced by recent international reforms; it purely essentialist; and it focuses on the gifted and students. To be sure this study is relevant for curriculum development in developing countries. From a post-colonial perspective the study is relevant to mathematics education of indigenous and marginalized populations in developed countries.

Gifted University Students: Last Chance To ‘Come Out Of The Closet', Rozz Albon, Tony Jewels
Gifted University Students: Last Chance To ‘Come Out Of The Closet', Rozz Albon, Tony Jewels

If, as some people believe, university teaching is all about allowing or enabling students to attain their full potential, rather than merely creating more ‘bricks in the wall’, gifted students provide a particularly thorny problem for teaching academics in the contemporary university environment. Many gifted students, by the time they reach university, have long since established, in their attempts to ‘fit in’, how to hide their special talents. A university environment may well be the final formal opportunity for gifted students to be accepted as such, and most importantly, for them to take better advantage of these capabilities in their …

A Decision To Serve: Decision Making Through Service Learning, Elizabeth A. Romey
A Decision To Serve: Decision Making Through Service Learning, Elizabeth A. Romey
Perspectives In Learning
The use of service learning and community service with students at all levels of ability is becoming increasingly prevalent, especially with gifted students, because of their need to prepare for college applications. These applications often require a range of activities including community service as well as straight academic success. However, the distinction between community service, a reactive activity, and service learning, a proactive process in which students take leadership roles in their community, is not always emphasized. The role of structured decision-making processes, like those in Talents Unlimited and Future Problem Solving, to enable gifted students to take proactive leadership …

Can students with learning and attention difficulties in school actually be talented scientists in disguise? This article presents a model that was highly successful in identifying and developing scientific talent in these special students. The factors that contributed to the success of the model were the following: The emphasis was on helping students become creative producers. The model also featured a strong mentoring component that included role-modeling and problem solving within specific scientific domains and provided students with authentic, discovery-based, experiential, advanced level subject matter of the domain. Finally, the alternate means of assessing student achievement focused on a student’s …

In 1993, two decades after the 1972 U.S. Office of Education Report on the status of gifted and talented programs (the Marland Report), U. S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley issued a report stating that gifted education is essential to our nation’s future and documenting the “quiet risk” faced by gifted children and gifted education programs in the United States.
