Improving Infant And Toddler Care Through Staff Development, Sandra L. Seavers

The author designed and implemented a series of workshops for staff to become more knowledgeable with the center's policies and procedures. A series of workshops was developed and implemented to achieve the stated objective. There was improvement in communication, as indicated by surveys and observation. Tasks completed were reduced, as indicated by documentation and surveys. Accidents were reduced, as evidenced by accident reports. There was improvement in providing appropriate activities, as evidenced by pretest-posttest test scores. The quality of care being provided was improved as a result of training program implemented.

A Program For Improving Student Achievement In The Geography Related Performance Standards Of The American History Curriculum, Michael C. Richardson

The program involved the development of materials for the instruction and testing of geography related performance standards to the American History curriculum. The program’s aim were twofold: 1) to assist the teacher in that materials were not available and 2) to address the problem of low achievement of the students in their basic geographical knowledge and its application to American History. The problems addressed by this practicum were identified by both teacher questionnaire and student pre-tests. Over nine-week period, students constructed a historical atlas of maps which correlated with the students/ regular history studies. Students also received a study guide …

The paper first established a reference for the study by reviewing the history, of associate degrees in the United States and those factors that influenced the use and the value of those degrees to students graduating from two-year institutions.

Improving Spelling Performance Of Sixth Grade Students Using Eclectic Spelling Strategies And A Cognitive-Based Approach, Marilyn L. Frieling

The poor spelling performance of a group of sixth graders was addressed by utilizing the Informal Spelling Inventory suggested by Mann and Suiter (1974). This criterion – referenced test determined that nine members of the sixth grade class scored well below grade level expectations in spelling. A cognitive – based approach and eclectic spelling strategies were implemented with the target group in order to improve their spelling achievement. The results indicated a cognitive-based approach through phonetic instruction and rule generalizations increased levels of achievement in the target group. The author developed and implemented a program to increase the preschool disadvantaged child's ability to follow oral directions. The program's aims were to help the child to follow one, two, and three step oral directions given by a teacher which is considered a minimum competency for entrance into the district's kindergarten reading program.

The conceptual framework used by Chabot College's Associate. Degree nursing program was criticized by the State Board of Nursing and by the nursing students as lacking in clarity and consistency in faculty implementation. The faculty subsequently discussed the need to formalized the conceptual framework and its implementation into a written guide book for use by both faculty and students. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a guide book that would incorporate the conceptual framework of the nursing program's curriculum.

Shelby State Community College (SSCC) is one of forty-six institutions comprising the State University and Community College System of Tennessee (SBR). The SBR enrolls large numbers of students each year who have educational objectives that are subject to change. Students who wish to transfer from two-to four-year institutions often lose credit, and are sometimes required to repeat course content already learned. This results in increased attrition, and loss of money and time for students, faculty, and taxpayers.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in reading achievement in male and female students in the elementary school. The subjects were 600 selected students from elementary schools operating in a public schoo1 system in the Southeast. The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) scores For 1987 were collected for 600 third, fourth, and fifth grade students. The purpose of this study was to determine what home economics teachers perceive they are teaching and compare their perceptions with what parents and social service agency representatives in economically depressed counties perceived students should be taught. In 1986, Johnson determined parents' and social service agency representatives' perceptions of the importance of home economics concepts for high school students. In March 1987, a questionnaire, adapted from Johnson's Nebraska Home Economics Needs Assessment questionnaire, was mailed to 50 high school home economics teachers from 41 economically depressed counties throughout Nebraska. Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article compares the administration of communication studies programs in the United States and Australia, using a faculty exchange between the University of Kansas and Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education as a case study. The analysis identifies three major areas of difference: historical development, philosophical orientation, and administrative policies. In the United States, communication programs largely evolved from speech departments with strong rhetorical and skills-based traditions, while in Australia the field developed more recently with interdisciplinary and critical orientations. Philosophical divergences are evident in curricular emphases, with American programs often stressing public speaking and skills training, and Australian programs incorporating …

This study reports findings from a survey of members of the International Communication Association’s Organizational Division regarding the status of organizational communication and public relations programs in higher education. Data from seventy-nine respondents indicate that relatively few institutions offer full baccalaureate degrees in these areas, with most providing emphases or cognates within broader communication or journalism programs. Content analysis of definitions shows organizational communication conceived as encompassing all communication processes contributing to organizational functioning, while public relations is framed as boundary-spanning communication directed primarily toward external publics. Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am particularly enthusiastic about joining you to discuss values education. It is one of the three most important challenges favoring American public education. The other two, parenthetically, are: (1) Successfully meeting the needs of children and youth at risk of school failure; and (2) The availability of sufficient quantities of quality teachers. In developing curricula and educational policy, arts educators must participate with students, parents and other members of the community in dialectic processes of values examination. Failure to do so can often result in the development of curricula and policies which send unintended and unacceptable signals about the purposes and importance of the arts in our society.
