Publishing companies' consultants plan and implement staff development programs in reading to meet inservice needs of school districts throughout the United States. The changes that are occurring in reading education are impacting the role of the classroom teacher. Inservice programs that were previously successful must now be evaluated to determine if they meet the current needs of teachers.

Studies that assess student achievement indicate many students graduate from high school without basic skills essential for them to be productive members of society. The most basic of these skills is the ability to think. As a result of these studies there …

A Study To Determine Webster University-Kansas City Curriculum And Program Needs For The 1990’S, Richard D.J. St. Clair

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Kansas City is one of the forty-five extended centers operated by Webster University (WU) located in St. Louis, Missouri. The Kansas City center, which has approximately one thousand student enrollments, is the sixth largest provider of higher education programs in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Income generated annually at the center is substantial, and is important to the university as it helps defray operational and administrative costs within the Webster system.

The purpose of this major applied research project was to determine what, if any, curriculum and/or program changes should be made in anticipation of a changing workplace, specifically as …

Improving Social Studies Achievement: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Lindalee Kaminski Jul 1989

Improving Social Studies Achievement: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Lindalee Kaminski

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A high percentage of students in a second grade class with low socio-economic characteristics demonstrated exceptionally low achievement in social studies. The problem was addressed by the implementation of an interdisciplinary program to increase basic skills in all areas of the curriculum. Activities designed to increase the target group's understanding of social studies concepts while practicing skills in reading, language arts, math, and science were incorporated into all subject areas utilizing a whole language approach. An emphasis on critical thinking and daily news events allowed for student growth in inferential comprehension and the formation of attitudes about the world. The …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of An Instructional Program Preparing Disabled Students To Use A Canine Companion., Bonita M. Bergin

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Canine Companions for Independence (CCT) pioneered and has been in the forefront of placing dogs with disabled individuals to facilitate their independence through increased physical and social capabilities. With the number of applications increasing daily, CCI launched an expansion effort to include the development of six regional training centers located strategically across the United States to increase the program placement capabilities to more than 300 Canine Companions each year.

The increasing complexity of program management, training and monitoring resulting from this development had defined the need for a written curriculum to be used by staff involved in teaching the disabled …

Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby Jun 1989

Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

California community college reform legislation enacted in August 1988 was predicated on the willingness of the colleges to assume an increasingly more prominent role in local, regional, and statewide economic development. Many colleges, especially small community colleges, have not clearly defined their potential role as a catalyst and resource for economic development.

This study had three primary purposes related to the role of the community college in economic development. First, the results of this study should assist administrators at Crafton Hills College, a small two-year public community college in southern California, in defining and implementing the college's economic development mission …

The Use Of The College-Level Academic Skills Test For The Nontraditional Community College Student., Harry T. Albertson Mar 1989

The Use Of The College-Level Academic Skills Test For The Nontraditional Community College Student., Harry T. Albertson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In Florida, there is the anomaly of a student successfully completing a prescribed curriculum leading to the associate in arts degree and having the degree and access to the upper division delayed or denied because of an inability to pass a four-hour exam. The exam is called the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), and recent studies postulating biases within the Competency standards of the test et concern about statistically significant score differences between certain populations have raised issues about the test performance of nontraditional students.

Succinctly, this study utilized quasi-experimental techniques to isolate the performance of adult students. female students, …

A Determination Of The Important Computer Competencies Needed By Air Force Trainers: A Curriculum Plan For Achieving Computer Competency, William R. Dees Mar 1989

A Determination Of The Important Computer Competencies Needed By Air Force Trainers: A Curriculum Plan For Achieving Computer Competency, William R. Dees

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The lack of adequate computer competencies has been a serious deficiency of trainers assigned to the European Communications Division. Prior to this MARP, the important computer competencies needed by Alt Force trainers were not known and a curriculum for achieving computer competency did not exist. Determining the important computer competencies and designing a curriculum were necessary to compensate for limited training funds, reduced numbers of formal computer courses, and to keep pace with computer technology in work centers. Because computers are used in many work centers of the division for word processing and information processing, it is imperative that trainers …

Developing A Basic Introduction To Fiber Optics Principles And Applications, David C. Onuoha

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A new civilization (the information Age or the Electronic Era) is emerging in the United States of America. The new age j s characterized by a rapidly-changing technology; hence, general knowledge in a field of study soon becomes part of core curriculum in that field of study. In order to survive in the emerging information society, one has to be willing to continually retrain. There is a need to constantly review and update curriculum (particularly in vocational programs).

Creative Learning: A Curriculum For Preprimary Children. Unit 8, Dinosaur Era And Fossils, Marjorie L. Oelerich, Jean Peterson, Elizabeth J. Sandell

Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications

DINOSAUR ERA AND FOSSILS is one resource unit. It is hoped to serve as a resource to others as they guide the learning of young children. It is not a cut-and-dried, how-to-do-it book. But it is a collection of numerous learning experiences within the context of a unit setting. The various disciplines are not, and cannot, be separated; learning overlaps. With a central theme, young children will have many opportunities to examine, investigate, explore, experience and discover concepts of meaning. As the children approach the same concept from a number of experiences, they will have opportunities to formulate ideas, to …

Dbae And Clae, Nancy Johnson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The foundations upon which knowledge is organized and presented in both discipline-based and cultural literacy approaches to art education are addressed. It is argued that the foundations for these two approaches are a result of conflicting views on the standardization of curricula and the perceived need for achievement oriented evaluation; these in turn are reflective of a fundamental difference in beliefs and assumptions as to the nature of education.

Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of A Course To Enhance The Cognitive Learning Strategies Of Freshman College Students, Curtis Miles Jan 1989

Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of A Course To Enhance The Cognitive Learning Strategies Of Freshman College Students, Curtis Miles

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Many American students appear to learn orally and/or passively, often not linking new information to existing information, knowledge structures, or broader perspectives. National study commissions, researchers, and teachers point to a lack of systematic and comprehensive student learning strategies as a key contributor to the high level of student failure and attrition in college. Piedmont Technical College Shared this problem, with 23% attrition across two quarters and two-thirds of entering students requiring developmental studies.

Traditional study skills courses have proven largely ineffective in leading students to change their learning behavior. This development of research studies sought to determine the efficiency …

An Investigation Of The Causes Of Early Withdrawal From High School And A Proposed Alternative Education Program For The Hopewell Valley Regional School District, Diane L. Paul

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to (1) conduct an investigation to determine the causes of early withdrawal from high school; (2) design an alternative education program; and (3) suggest an implementation plan for the Hopewell Valley Regional School District to increase the system's holding power of young people and to prevent school dropouts. With an annual dropout rate of two percent, Hopewell Valley school officials believed that an alternative school program needed to be developed to offer a viable and suitable non-traditional educational option to meet special needs, interests, and aspirations of the students. Four basic …
