Literacy Coaching: Roles And Responsibilities, Pa Thao Jan 2013

Literacy Coaching: Roles And Responsibilities, Pa Thao

Education Dissertations and Projects

Literacy coaching has emerged as a popular strategy for school reform to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement in reading. Unfortunately, districts are hiring literacy coaches without a clear job description for the position. This is resulting in a broad focus for coaching and minimizing the impact of the work to support teachers in the classroom. A plethora of research (Bean, Draper, Hall, Vandermolen, & Zigmond, 2010; Collet, 2012; Elish-Piper & L'Allier, 2011; Lucas, 2011; Matsumura, Garnier, & Resnick, 2010; Peterson, Taylor, Burnham, & Schock, 2011; Steckel, 2009; Stephens, Morgan, Deford, Donelly, Hamel, & Crowder, 2011; Vanderburg & Stephens, 2010) …

This no-cost study began with the collection of student achievement data (from state reading and math assessments), coaching data (from time logs), and demographic data (from the district database). Data were analyzed within a three-level hierarchical linear model to determine the predicted effect of coaching on student achievement outcomes.

Coaching In An Interactive Virtual Reality To Increase Fidelity Of Implementation Of Discrete Trial Teaching, Krista Vince Garland Jan 2012

Coaching In An Interactive Virtual Reality To Increase Fidelity Of Implementation Of Discrete Trial Teaching, Krista Vince Garland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In teacher preparation, more effective pathways and practices are needed for preparing, placing, and supporting beginning teachers and principals (Darling-Hammond, 2010; U.S. Department of Education, 2009b). A common issue in the field of special education is the lack of skill transfer from one setting to another (Dieker, Hynes, Hughes, & Smith, 2008). It has been posited that “practicing up” is not ethical in that novice teachers must attempt to teach with a limited knowledge of appropriate pedagogy and skill (Dieker et al., 2008). The new challenge becomes finding an effective mechanism that provides essential learning experiences and opportunities to refine …

Participants included teachers (n=144) and their instructional coaches (n=19), from elementary …

This quantitative study examined fifth year teachers’ perceptions of their induction programs in terms of teacher retention. The 280 eligible teachers from three different school districts were asked to participate …

School-Based Coaching: An Interpretive Study Of One Model Of Professional Development, Michele De Bellis Jan 2009

School-Based Coaching: An Interpretive Study Of One Model Of Professional Development, Michele De Bellis

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A trend developing over the last decade in professional development has been to provide teachers with support and guidance through engaging and interactive experiences (Boston Plan for Excellence, 2004). The assumption is that teachers who are provided with hands-on professional development experiences will make connections and add meaning to new content or pedagogy being taught and increase the likelihood of transfer of those practices to the classroom. Another current approach to professional development, known as school-based, delivers support to teachers in the eye of the storm, at the school site and in the classroom (Barkley, 2005). Proponents of school-based professional …

Examination Of Preferred Coaching Behaviors As Predicted By Athlete Gender, Race, And Playing Time, Glenn Parrish Burdette Jan 2008

Examination Of Preferred Coaching Behaviors As Predicted By Athlete Gender, Race, And Playing Time, Glenn Parrish Burdette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Multidimensional Model for Sport Leadership (MML) (Chelladurai, 1980) states that athlete performance and satisfaction are functions of the congruency between the preferred leadership of student-athletes, the required behavior of the coach as dictated by the situation, and the actual behavior of the coach. The model was developed nearly 30 years ago and while research outside of sport has indicated that leadership preferences have changed with generations, the MML is still the most widely accepted model for sport leadership. As such, research in sport should examine how appropriate the model is to todays athletic culture. Gender, one member characteristic, has …

Effective Administrative Policies In Conducting An Interscholastic Program In The High School, James N. Rodgers Aug 1963

Effective Administrative Policies In Conducting An Interscholastic Program In The High School, James N. Rodgers

Graduate Student Research Papers

Athletics had a long, bitter struggle to find its way into the schools. The corruption that grew out of the pre-school athletics finally awakened the school administrators in the early part of the twentieth century to do something about it. The first step was to receive the program into the schools. However, this did not solve all the problems. Administrative problems have prevailed in the schools ever since the entrance of athletics into the educational curriculum. It can be safely said, however, that the problems are fewer, primarily because of the education of the administrators. The current problems are centralized …
