Plurilingualism In The Fsl Classroom And Beyond, Rachel L. Wohlgemut Aug 2021

Plurilingualism In The Fsl Classroom And Beyond, Rachel L. Wohlgemut

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

In Canada, there are 269 different languages that are spoken daily (Statistics Canada, 2016). So why should we limit ourselves to French and English, when we have a multitude of other languages to explore? Here is where plurilingualism comes in. Plurilingualism is “[a]n approach to language learning that incorporates multiple competencies in different languages working in tandem to promote learning” (IGI Global, 2021). It “aims for transfer of knowledge and skills across languages” (Cummins, 2005). In my presentation, I will explain how teachers can use plurilingualism to the benefit of teachers and their learners alike through digital identity texts. I …

Using A Self-Paced Reading Task To Examine The Comprehension Monitoring Abilities Of Children With And Without Adhd, Olivia J. Ward Aug 2021

Using A Self-Paced Reading Task To Examine The Comprehension Monitoring Abilities Of Children With And Without Adhd, Olivia J. Ward

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The current study examined how children with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) deployed their attention while reading and the cognitive processes thought to be related to successful comprehension. 42 children between 9 and 14 years of age read passages during a self-paced reading task. Half of the passages contained semantic inconsistencies. Of interest was the two groups of children’s subsequent comprehension and the extent that they noticed the inconsistencies. The children’s working memory, inferencing ability, verbal and non-verbal intelligence and decoding ability were also measured. Only the typically developing children’s reading times were impacted by the passages’ consistency. …

Governance In Post-Secondary Institutions, Kyla Johnson Aug 2021

Governance In Post-Secondary Institutions, Kyla Johnson

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

The concept of collegial governance is well understood in the post-secondary sector. The basic premise of this is that colleagues make decisions collectively for the benefit of the unit. While collegial governance does aim for consensus, unanimity is not necessary the outcome. The organizational structure of a university is a mediating factor in terms of collegial governance. This research will explore governance structures, specifically in Faculties of Education across Canada. Some comparative analysis will also be undertaken with relevant jurisdictions (i.e., US.) This was done through data collection and conducting a literature review in the area’s collegial governance and governance …

Virtual Interviews In The Era Of Covid-19: Expectations And Perceptions Of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Candidates And Program Directors, David A. Brueggeman, Garrhett G. Via, Andrew W. Froehle, Anil Krishnamurthy Aug 2021

Virtual Interviews In The Era Of Covid-19: Expectations And Perceptions Of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Candidates And Program Directors, David A. Brueggeman, Garrhett G. Via, Andrew W. Froehle, Anil Krishnamurthy

School of Health and Exercise Sciences Faculty Publications

Orthopaedic surgery residency program directors (PDs) and candidates consider interviews to be central to the application process. In-person interviews are typical, but virtual interviews present a potentially appealing alternative. Candidate and PD expectations and perceptions of virtual interviews during the 2020/2021 orthopaedic surgery application cycle were assessed.

Methods: Candidates and PDs were surveyed electronically. Questions covered pre-virtual-interview and post-virtual-interview expectations and perceptions, and past in-person experiences (PDs and reapplicants) on the relative importance of application components, ability to assess fit, interview costs, and preferred interview mode. Identical questions allowed between-group comparisons.

Results: Responses included n = 29 PDs and n …

An Investigation Of Students' Use And Understanding Of Evaluation Strategies, Abolaji R. Akinyemi Aug 2021

An Investigation Of Students' Use And Understanding Of Evaluation Strategies, Abolaji R. Akinyemi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One expected outcome of physics instruction is that students develop quantitative reasoning skills, including evaluation of problem solutions. To investigate students’ use of evaluation strategies, we developed and administered tasks prompting students to check the validity of a given expression. We collected written (N>673) and interview (N=31) data at the introductory, sophomore, and junior levels. Tasks were administered in three different physics contexts: the velocity of a block at the bottom of an incline with friction, the electric field due to three point charges of equal magnitude, and the final velocities of two masses in an elastic collision. Responses …

Embodying Resilience In The Writing Center: A Study Of Tutor Training Handbooks And Videos Towards An Understanding Of The "Ideal" Tutoring Session, Katelyn Emily Parsons Aug 2021

Embodying Resilience In The Writing Center: A Study Of Tutor Training Handbooks And Videos Towards An Understanding Of The "Ideal" Tutoring Session, Katelyn Emily Parsons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines two distinct datasets (handbooks and videos) to explore whether writing tutors embody their training. This research project was grounded in Bruffee’s (1984; 1995) work with collaboration and its link to conversation (both verbal and nonverbal communicative acts) to analyze the peer-to-peer relationships that are observable in writing center tutorials. Research on collaboration and conversation provided a useful framework for qualitatively coding six (6) tutor training handbooks and sixteen (16) tutor training videos. In taking up Thompson’s (2009) and Olinger’s (2014; 2020) calls for further research on writers’ embodied understandings of language, the video component of this research …

Ouachita To Build 144-Bed Student Apartment Complex For Fall 2022, Ouachita News Bureau

Press Releases

Ouachita Baptist University will break ground on a 144-bed, $12.6 million student apartment complex this month, with plans for it to be open for the Fall 2022 semester.

The apartments are phase two of Project Foresight, an initiative the university launched three years ago. Project Foresight encompasses eight acres and 30 properties on the southwest edge of campus, including many that were vacant and seriously deteriorated.

Phase one of Project Foresight included leasing land to alumni-owned Pediatrics Plus, a children’s specialty healthcare clinic. The company built an $8 million facility adjacent to Ouachita’s campus that opened in January 2021. It …

Rejecting Abyssal Thinking In The Language And Education Of Racialized Bilinguals: A Manifesto, Ofelia Garcia, Nelson Flores, Kate Seltzer, Li Wei, Ricardo Otheguy, Jonathan Rosa Aug 2021

Rejecting Abyssal Thinking In The Language And Education Of Racialized Bilinguals: A Manifesto, Ofelia Garcia, Nelson Flores, Kate Seltzer, Li Wei, Ricardo Otheguy, Jonathan Rosa

College of Education Departmental Research

Following Boaventura de Sousa Santos, the authors of this article reject the type of “abyssal thinking” that erases the existence of counter-hegemonic knowledges and lifeways, adopting instead the “from the inside out” perspective that is required for thinking constructively about the language and education of racialized bilinguals. On the basis of deep personal experience and extensive field-work research, we challenge prevailing assumptions about language, bilingualism, and education that are based on raciolinguistic ideologies with roots in colonialism. Adopting a translanguaging perspective that rejects rigid colonial boundaries of named languages, we argue that racialized bilingual learners, like all students, draw from …
