The Academic And Behavioral Benefits Of Auditory Integration Training In High School-Aged Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jenny Lauterbach

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study is a double-blind experiment that assessed the effectiveness of auditory integration training (AIT) on the academic performance and behavior of 10 high school students between the ages of 15 and 17 years, all diagnosed as having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The subjects were administered a standardized test of auditory processing skills (TAPS) (Gardner, 1996), after which they participated in 15-20 minute sessions of auditory integration training (AIT) once a day for a period of four weeks. Some participants were exposed to filtered music, whereas others were exposed to non-filtered music. At the end of the 4 weeks, …

It Works For Me As A Scholar-Teacher: Shared Tips For The Classroom, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Dec 2007

It Works For Me As A Scholar-Teacher: Shared Tips For The Classroom, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

The authors’ purpose in this book is to provide “a collection of practical tips drawn from real-life experiences.” We believe this particular book is so important to share with today’s audience, we almost called it Take My Book, Please! On the other hand, does the scholarly world need another book on the importance of scholarship? Further, if the book standard for tenure is slowly disappearing because so many academic presses are closing, why would we bother to write one? And recent studies show that new faculty members consider university employment a 9:00-5:00 job, so doesn’t that leave out time for …

A Chronological Review Of Literacy Policies And Programs Of The Department Of Education & Training, Victoria, 1980-2005, Marion Meiers

Marion Meiers

Throughout the period 1980-2008 the influence of national and international theory and research in literacy is evident, in a variety of ways, in the policy and program responses of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. A review of Australian and international literature on the issue of literacy from 1980 to 2008 highlights the connections between policies and programs in the Victorian context and developments in theory and research in national and international contexts. This review covers the 25 years from 1980 to 2008, a period that has been characterised as a time when theory and research in the …

Case Study: United States, John Comings, John Benseman

John P. Comings

As with many other OECD countries, the United States of America (U.S.) estimated the literacy skills of its adult population as part of the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS). The U.S. published the results of its National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS), which employed what became the English version of the IALS test (National Center for Education Statistics 1993), and then published the results of a second estimate in 2006 after the completion of the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL), which employed a new version of the same test. The NAAL (National Center for Education Statistics, 2006) changed the familiar …

Total Cost Of Ownership & Total Value Of Ownership, Kathryn Moyle Dec 2007

Total Cost Of Ownership & Total Value Of Ownership, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle

School leaders are regularly required to make decisions concerning the effective integration of ICT into their schools’ teaching and learning programs. School leaders however, face challenges about the processes to use to inform their decision-making. These challenges include knowing which data to draw upon; how to collect the data and how to analyze it so that meaningful decisions can emerge. As such, this chapter examines some recent activities aimed at using data to inform leadership and management strategies in schools as they pertain to teaching and learning with educational technologies, and focuses in particular on total cost of ownership and …

Lorelei Lingard

BACKGROUND: Teaching is an important professional role for most faculty members in academic health sciences centres. Careful delineation of educational workload is needed to foster and reward teaching efforts, and to facilitate equitable allocation of resources.

AIMS: To promote recognition in teaching and facilitate equitable resource allocation, we developed, piloted, and qualitatively assessed a tool for delineating the educational workload of pediatric faculty in an academic health sciences centre.

METHODS: A prototype educational workload measurement tool was developed. Between 2002 and 2004, three successive phases of pilot implementation were conducted to (1) assess the face validity of the tool, (2) …

International Civic And Citizenship Education Study : Assessment Framework, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley, Bruno Losito, David Kerr

Dr John Ainley

The International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) is the third lEA project investigating the role of schooling in preparing young people for their roles as citizens in society. The first study in this area began in 1971. The second Civic Education Study was undertaken in 1999. Almost 10 years on, global change has again prompted a new survey of civic and citizenship education. Amongst other considerations, the growing impact of the processes of globalization, external threats to civic societies and their freedoms, and the limited interest and involvement of young generations in public and political life. Introducing New Content Into A School Mathematics Curriculum: The Case Of Cryptology, Kalvin Whittles, Ole-Einar Torkildsen, Cyril Julie, Trygve Breiteig

Kalvin Whittles Dr.

Developing learning resources forms an important part of a school mathematics curriculum implementation. This chapter argues for a change in the way we do analysis for developing learning resources. An argument is forwarded for an undertstanding of the main concepts within the topic as well as a historical and didactical analysis thereof in order to make statements with respect to the teaching and learning of the topic. For this analysis, the topic of cryptology is used as an example. The chapter concludes with recommendations to curriculum designers to revisit the accepted practice to adept already historicalle en didactically analysed materials, …

Graduate Course Experience 2007 : The Report Of The Course Experience Questionnaire, Daniel Edwards, Hamish Coates, B Guthrie, S Nesteroff

Dr Daniel Edwards

This report analyses the course experience perceptions of those graduates who completed the requirements for a coursework degree from an Australian higher education institution in 2006 and who responded to the 2007 Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). It is the fifteenth report in a series that began in 1993 but it may also be considered to be the sixth in a new series of reports on the expanded CEQ because the structure of the questionnaire since 2002 differs considerably from earlier versions. Several further revisions have been incorporated into this report, such as a greater emphasis on results pertaining to postgraduate …
