On the evening of February 19th, 2008, we had the distinct honor and pleasure of meeting Ms. Erin Gruwell, teacher, motivational speaker and author of The Freedom Writers’ Diary and Teach With Your Heart. Upon being introduced, Ms. Gruwell focused the attention of the audience on her greatest passion, the students. After asking the teenagers to stand and be recognized, she ardently requested that the adults in the room purchase a copy of her book The Freedom Writers’ Diary, for every student present so that they might be inspired by students like themselves.

Emotional Labor: Re/Membering Juan, Randall Wright, Kathryn Schofield

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

This paper finds its home in a graduate student’s essay which led to the realization that teaching for social justice in a foundations course cannot ignore the emotional labor of teachers. Critical concepts such as ideology, hegemony and domination must be considered as cognitive frameworks and emotional management systems that delimit and prescribe proper “feelings” for teachers as well. Current educational discourses serve a similar emotional management function. Schools are thus considered battlegrounds for dominance and control of teachers’ emotional lives. Seeing your students at Wal-Mart does not constitute “meaningful interaction”. This fact alone makes the GEAR UP Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA), held at California State University, San Bernardino in the summer of 2006, an epic event. Educating singles on how to develop healthy, romantic relationships can be beneficial to their subsequent dating and marital satisfaction, and for Army soldiers, their satisfaction with military life. A new relationship program, the P.I.C.K. program, was delivered to single Army soldiers, and at the conclusion of the program participants demonstrated an increase in their understanding of the crucial areas to explore and discuss in a premarital relationship, gained a better understanding of how to pace their relationship, and exhibited more realistic attitudes and beliefs about marriage and mate selection.

This study focuses on two prospective teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) who were enrolled in a master's program and were being tutored as they prepared to write a scholarly review of literature. The methodology involved videotaping four tutoring sessions, each tutor was assigned to participate in two tutoring sessions each with the same participant. The videotaped data was then transcribed and analyzed for significant scaffolding occurrences that may have promoted successful transfer of responsibility facilitating autonomy for the learner. Critical Analysis Of Total Physical Response As Pedagogy, Rachel Lynn Anderson

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language-teaching method, developed by James Asher in the 1960's. In this critical analysis the theoritical origins of TPR were explored along with the work of James Asher. Twenty-three studies by Asher were examined in conjuction with others who have studied TPR, in order to understand the effectiveness of TPR as both theory and pedagogy. In all studies examined, TPR (which focuses on listening comprehension) was found to be an effective means for producing near perfect retention even long term. TPR was found to be a powerful method for teaching a second lanuage.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between a social story intervention and non-academic social behavior in young students in a special day class. In this study, three participants with a variety of disabilities were selected from a special day class. When individual undesired behaviors are taken into account along with functional equivalents, identified through a functional behavior assessment, it is hypothesized that undesired behaviors will decrease with a corresponding increase in appropriate behavior. A Four-month intervention project consisting of regular parent training meetings and weekly take-home parent-child interactive literacy activities was implemented to examine the association between quality of mother-child interaction and preschoolers' early literacy development for five families enrolled in a state subsidized preschool program. The Palm Vista Family Home Literacy Program located in the high desert region of San Bernardino County was offered free of charge to all parents and their preschool aged children who were enrolled.
