This paper examines the use of mixed methods for analyzing users’ avatar-related activities in a virtual world. Server logs recorded keystroke-level activity for 595 participants over a six-month period in Whyville.net, an informal science website. Participants also completed surveys and participated in interviews regarding their experiences. Additionally, the study included online ethnographic observations of Whyville and offline observations of a subset of 88 users in classroom and after-school settings during their participation. A mixed-methods analysis identified a major user emphasis on avatar appearance and customization that was invariant across user typologies. Implications for the use of mixed methods in online …

Entering The Virtual Teacher’S Lounge: The Efficacy Of Community In Computer-Mediated Communication Based Environments For Professional Educators, Randall S. Dunn
Faculty Dissertations
This study seeks to illuminate an understanding of naturally forming online communities of professional educators in the context of off-line communities. Essentially, an online discussion forum for educators is evaluated for the purpose of determining whether the forum provides a “space” conducive for the development of a community of professional educators as benchmarked against an understanding of offline community formation and existence. The foundational works of Ferdinand Tonnies, James Coleman, and Ray Oldenburg are used to develop 13 characteristics of community - as understood in the context of informal social communities as opposed to the types related to more formal …

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
In matters of health and culture, For some, uncertainty is the motor of life; For others, anything only is because it is explainable; Not just any explanations, but those that are “data-based.” Still for some individuals, phenomena can be both certain and uncertain. For this third class, “believables” are found in-between what is and what can be. Subjectivity and context may be primordial in many things HUMAN, but Equity in opportunities and access to social goods and services, Dignity for all human beings under every circumstance, and Respect for self and others at all times, are even much more basic. …

Perceptions Of Special Education And General Education Teachers On Co-Teaching Of Students With Disabilities In Outheast Georgia School Systems, Deborah Richardson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The researcher's purpose of this study was to understand perceptions of co-teaching by special education and general education teachers, and how those perceptions make the implementation of co-teaching for students with disabilities in the general education classroom successful. The study examined teacher perceptions on training for co-teaching, recommended practices for co-teaching, and supports needed for the co-teaching team. The researcher administered a Likert-scale survey, Perceptions of Co-Teaching Survey developed by Vance Austin (2001) to 45 special education and 98 general education teachers with co-teaching experience from three school districts in southeast Georgia.
