An Analysis Of Spending Patterns In Dissimilar Revenue School Districts In The State Of Michigan, M. Scott Korpak

The primary purpose of this study was to compare two districts with somewhat similar demographics but with dissimilar revenues to see whether or not additional funding per child resulted in enhanced learning opportunities for students in the higher funded district. In addition, although not a primary function of this study, student achievement was considered as a possible outcome for students who had enhanced learning opportunities.

Because public school funding is determined by policy makers, three public policy questions were the basis for comparing the two districts. The three questions were as follows: (a) Should a child’s zip code determine the …

The "Great Experiment" And The Michigan State Normal School: An Institutional History Analysis, Ronald D. Flowers

This study examines the historic development of teacher training in the western world and the United States, focusing on the establishment and institutionalization of teacher preparation in the normal schools of the mid-nineteenth century. This study presents the institutional building blocks that formed the foundation of teacher preparation in America.

In addition, this study examines these building blocks as they became manifest in the establishment of the Michigan State Normal School from its founding in 1849 through its transition to a four-year college in 1900.

This literature review examined the recent literature on the subject of the role of today's kindergarten program. While the methods of teaching reading are constantly changing due to advancements, the purpose of this research has been to determine the effectiveness of two particular reading methods that are currently being practiced. The "scientifically based" reading program demands explicit and systematic instructional strategies as outlined in the No Child Left Behind Act-Reading First Grant while the optional reading method allows the teacher to selected reading material, time allocations, and reading techniques based on local objectives and expectations (Nevada Reading First). Every year more and more children become clinically overweight. One vital aspect of a child's overall health is their fitness level. This paper explores the correlation between cardiovascular activity and fitness levels. The research will be conducted at Monaco Middle School in two periods of sixth grade physical education. Pre and post fitness testing were used to evaluate fitness levels. The fourth period class will receive increased amounts of cardiovascular activities several days a week. Despite a rich history of research and reform, educational scholars have not yet formulated a working definition of effective teaching that encompasses the complexities of the learning process. Today, as policy makers demand measurable outcomes, teachers are increasingly aware of their need to be effective in motivating their students to achieve. In order to do so, teachers need to establish balanced practices that incorporate all three of the domains of learning: (a) affective, (b) behavioral, and (c) cognitive. This study examined teachers' perceptions about the efficacy of study groups as a means to better prepare them for guided reading and incorporated comprehension strategy instruction. The questions this study addressed related to teacher perceptions about the effects of study group participation on teacher practice and student learning, as well as characteristics of effective study groups and obstacles hindering their effectiveness. School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports : An Evaluation Of An Elementary School Program, Lisa Andreasen

The outcomes of a school-wide positive behavior support program at a rural elementary school were evaluated to determine the effects of a school-wide program on the behavior of students. A program evaluation was conducted using student office referrals that were collected over a six year period. The results indicated that student office referrals significantly decreased from Year 1 to Year 6 and that specific behaviors of aggression and inappropriate language also decreased significantly from Year 1 to Year 6. Data were investigated to indicate trends in total office referrals by gender, grade, month, location, and problem behavior.
