Dropout And Graduation Rates In Nevada, Sandra D. Owens-Kane Jan 2006

Dropout And Graduation Rates In Nevada, Sandra D. Owens-Kane

Social Health of Nevada Reports

This report spotlights the high school graduation and dropout rates in Nevada, shows how the trends in our state compared to the trends in other states, and outlines community resources available to Nevadans seeking to improve their educational achievements. High school dropout and graduation rates are key indicators by which we judge an educational system. The importance of these indicators stems from the fact that higher educational achievement correlates positively with individual and community social health – e.g., the higher the graduation rates of individuals within a community, the greater the level of personal fulfillment and community development. Conversely, high …

Academic Achievement And School Resources In Nevada, Teresa Jordan Jan 2006

Academic Achievement And School Resources In Nevada, Teresa Jordan

Social Health of Nevada Reports

For several decades there has been a growing concern in the United States over the student achievement in our public schools. In 1983, the National Commission on Excellence in Education issued a report, A Nation at Risk, http://www.ed.gov/pubs/NatAtRisk/index.html, that called for educational reform. As student achievement scores declined, even with increased investment in education, the business community, policy makers, and educators rallied to address a vital issue for our future: how to improve student achievement and ensure that the 21st century workforce has the knowledge and skills to compete in a global economy.

Government Information Research, Susie Skarl Jan 2006

Government Information Research, Susie Skarl

Library Faculty Research

Prior to the mid-1990s, much government information lay outside the mainstream of library catalogs and core indexes and, consequently, was greatly underutilized. Finding government information required negotiating cumbersome search tools, specialized indexes, and separate call number systems. By the end of the 1990s, government information had become more accessible on the World Wide Web. Although the Internet has made searching and finding government information less taxing for patrons, most still require instruction from library staff in order to satisfy their needs in the best possible manner.

E-Learning In The Corporate Sector: A Case Study In The Oil And Gas Industry, Frank Bate

Theses

This research examined the implementation of an e-learning tool at Apache Energy, an oil and gas company operating in Western Australia. The e-learning tool was developed to help facilitate an understanding of site safety at an oil and gas facility characterised by an increasingly contracted workforce. The study’s research questions were formulated to describe and explain the implementation, looking particularly at relationships between the design of the e-learning tool, the way in which it was implemented, and the outcomes that emerged. The study adopted an interpretive-case study approach focusing on 256 contractors who engaged with the e-learning tool at a …

The Effectiveness Of A Literature-Driven English Programme In Improving The English Language Skills Of Secondary One Students In Singapore, Mary Delfin Pereira

Theses

The aim of the research was to discover whether an integrated Literature and English curriculum would be effective in enhancing the English language skills of students in schools. These schools included a girls’ only school, a boys’ only school and two co-educational schools. These schools were also of different types: independent, government-aided and government schools. "Change Based On What Students Say": Preparing Teachers For A Paradoxical Model Of Leadership, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2006

"Change Based On What Students Say": Preparing Teachers For A Paradoxical Model Of Leadership, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article discusses how a radical approach to teacher education encourages both pre‐service teachers and high school students to embrace a paradoxical model of leadership. A project that positions high school students as teachers and learners in an undergraduate secondary teacher certification course challenges pre‐service teachers to learn to teach by listening to high school students, and it challenges students to learn to speak and take action within their school lives. As participant reflections illustrate, this project enacts the paradoxical model it advocates: it contradicts received notions of leadership as hierarchical, top‐down, and synonymous with a single person—in this case, …

Reconceptualising The Professional Development Of In-Service Science Teachers In Pakistan, Nelofer Halai

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

Pakistan is a society in transition in more ways than one: politically it is still trying to find its place in the democratic nations of the world; economically it is taking steps to move closer to a market-based economy; and socially it is nurturing a more liberal and just society by reining in the religious extremists. In the aftermath of 9/11 stress has been on educational reform in a number of areas including – updating curriculum, improving access to schooling and developing teacher education. Teacher as the agent of reform is slowly gaining currency in Pakistan. The Institute for Educational …

Deconstructing The Frame: Siting Absence, Jason Wallin Jan 2006

Deconstructing The Frame: Siting Absence, Jason Wallin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Our contemporary social landscape is increasingly inscribed and articulated through images. With the proliferation of televisual mediums, the image has become the primary vehicle mediating social relationships, impinging on our experience of both self and other (Debord, 1978). As Virilio (2002) avers, the drive of capitalism seeks to appropriate the imagistic code as a bid for mastery over the symbolic order. In this manner, the media/ted images that flood the social terrain are often cites of ideological del sign. In other words, signs are often ideologically 'stabilized' as connotations of other signs, forming an abstract, positive calculus of signification. In …

Sound, Presence, And Power: "Student Voice" In Educational Research And Reform, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2006

Sound, Presence, And Power: "Student Voice" In Educational Research And Reform, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Every way of thinking is both premised on and generative of a way of naming that reflects particular underlying convictions. Over the last 15 years, a way of thinking has reemerged that strives to reposition students in educational research and reform. Best documented in Australia, Canada, England, and the United States, this way of thinking is premised on the following convictions: that young people have unique perspectives on learning, teaching, and schooling; that their insights warrant not only the attention but also the responses of adults; and that they should be afforded opportunities to actively shape their education. Although these …

The "Constant Changing Of Myself": Revising Roles In Undergraduate Teacher Preparation, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2006

The "Constant Changing Of Myself": Revising Roles In Undergraduate Teacher Preparation, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this article the author describes the revision of the traditional roles of teacher educator, experienced mentor teacher, high school student, and preservice teacher required by a project based in the undergraduate secondary teacher education program she directs. Although role revisions can pose profound challenges to peoples identities and relationships, participants in the project find the “constant changing of myself.” That the role revisions require to be liberating, empowering, and educative. The role revisions foster the development of more dynamic and productive relationships than exist among individuals in traditional roles in teacher preparation and inspire participants to develop a more …

The Effect Of Instructional Technologies On The Finance Classroom, Steven D. Dolvin, J. Michael Morgan, Mark Pyles Jan 2006

The Effect Of Instructional Technologies On The Finance Classroom, Steven D. Dolvin, J. Michael Morgan, Mark Pyles

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Using a survey technique, we evaluate the effect of PowerPoint, online lecture notes, financial calculators, and machine readable forms (MRF) on students' assessment of the quality of instruction, perceived knowledge level, satisfaction, post-course interest in the subject, and average grade in introductory finance courses. We also examine these opinions on a relative basis by comparing the responses of Finance majors versus non-Finance majors. The results suggest that certain technologies are received better than others and further, that the perceived quality of instructional techniques is largely contingent on the student's choice of major.
