Swosu Fact Book Fall 2001, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the tenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Early Language Learning With And Without Music, Douglas Fisher Oct 2001

Early Language Learning With And Without Music, Douglas Fisher

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Eighty students who spoke Spanish at home were randomly assigned one of four teachers. Two of the teachers used a great deal of music in their classrooms while the other two did not. The students and their teachers remained together for two years - kindergarten and first grade. Literacy achievement data suggests that music had a positive effect on oral language and reading scores. Differences focused on the use of music for morning opening, music and signing while working with words, and the use of music during listening stations.

Flarr Pages #23: Nahuatl Contributions To English And Spanish, Part I, John F. Schwaller

FLARR Pages

Nahuatl is the language of the Aztecs, and other Central Mexican peoples. At the time of the Spanish conquest it was easily one of the most widely spoken native languages of the Americas, with a geographical extent from what is now the northern reaches of Mexico to the southern border of Nicaragua. It continues to be widely spoken in Mexico and ranks as the most common native language in that country, with approximately a million speakers. It is part of a larger language family called the Uto-Aztecan family that includes North American Indian languages such as Shoshone and Ute, spoken …

Stranger In A Strange Land: Baptist Dean Of A Jesuit Law School, Mack Player Oct 2001

Stranger In A Strange Land: Baptist Dean Of A Jesuit Law School, Mack Player

Faculty Publications

In early 1994 when I was first approached by Santa Clara about beIng dean of its law school, I had to do basic, very basic, research before I returned their call. (This predated Web pages and my ability to access the technology that then existed.) A university guide book gave me the basics.

This sent me scurrymg to an atlas. Where is Santa Clara? As it is to most non-Californians, the profusion of California communities (and universities) with the "Santa" or "San" prefix was bewildering.

Herein foretold one of the princilpal issues that would confront me as dean, namely, the …

Promoting Curiosity Through Students’ Questioning, Harcharan Pardhan, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta Oct 2001

Promoting Curiosity Through Students’ Questioning, Harcharan Pardhan, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Asking questions is central to intellectual effort; it is instrumental in bridging the gap between the known and the unknown. Questioning existed even before the time of Greek philosopher Socrates and still prevails in classrooms. Questioning is a major teaching and learning strategy for teachers in Pakistan. Unfortunately, teachers’ questioning overrules students’ questioning, leaving neither space nor time to create an interactive environment that promotes curiosity and meaningful learning. Using an innovative approach, we attempted to implement students’ questioning in an upper primary science classroom. The encouraging findings of our study and their implications are discussed in this article.

Assessing Observation Focus And Conference Targets Of Cooperating Teachers, Margaret M. Coleman, Murrary F. Mitchell Oct 2001

Assessing Observation Focus And Conference Targets Of Cooperating Teachers, Margaret M. Coleman, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to develop a strategy to assess two facets of the supervisory responsibilities of Cooperating Teachers (CTs): (a) what CTs choose to observe during a lesson when preparing to offer comments to a student teacher and (b) what CTs choose to bring to the attention of student teachers after observing a lesson. The purpose also was to determine the usefulness of the strategy in discriminating among CTs that may have different preparation backgrounds for supervisory duties. Eighteen elementary level CTs participated by individually watching a videotaped lesson, preparing a written critique, and responding to interviews …

Using Online Learning Resources To Promote Deeper Learning, Roger Bruning, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Neal Grandgenett

Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This paper describes research on four web-based learning applications that employ a variety of assessment approaches and student tracking and data aggregation mechanisms. These applications are aimed at promoting deeper learning in web-based learning applications and courses and at facilitating a research-based, design experiment approach to prototype development and improvement. Developmental research on two of these tools, Affinity Learning and Critical Thinking, is discussed in this paper. Affinity Learning uses database-driven software to capture the teaching skill of a master teacher. Students are guided through online activities and assessments in accord with their skills and rate of learning. When a …
