A Study Of Attitudes And Beliefs Of Teachers And Site Council Members Toward Parental Involvement Within The Framework Of Four Models Of Home-School Relations, Beverly Ann Smith
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes and beliefs of faculty and site council members toward the type of parental involvement model desired in their schools and to assess whether or not a consistent opinion of parental involvement existed between the two school role groups. This study investigated the prevalence of four models of home-school relationships developed by Swap (1993). The four models are the Curriculum Enrichment Model, the Partnership Model, the Protective Model and the School to Home Transmission Model. Participants of the study consisted of faculty and site council members from five selected schools in …

The language pedagogy literature stresses the importance of the quality of second/foreign language teaching/learning in learners' acquisition, development of communicative competence, or both. The change literature equally emphasizes the importance of the quality of innovation in change audience’s resolution to reconceptualize current practices and espouse the new practice being advocated. Both literatures underline the need to use multiple research strategies in order to depict the product and process of learning and/or shifting experiences. To contribute to the educational literature in these areas, the present research incorporated two different but interrelated studies.
Study One utilized both between- and within-method approaches (Denzin, …

A Non-Authoritative Educational Metadata Ontology For Filtering And Recommending Learning Objects, David Wiley, Mimi M. Recker
Faculty Publications
Digital libraries populated with learning objects are becoming popular tools in the creation of instructional technologies. Many current efforts to create standard metadata structures that facilitate the discovery and instructional use of learning objects recommend a single, authoritative metadata record per version of the learning object. However, as we argue in this paper, a single metadata record -- particularly one with fields that emphasize knowledge management and technology, while evading instructional issues -- provides information insufficient to support instructional utilization decisions. To put learning objects to instructional use, users must examine the individual objects, forfeiting the supposed benefits of the …

Teaching Effectiveness In An Introductory High School Honors Physics Course As Measured By The Force Concept Inventory, April Crawford Moore
Teaching Effectiveness In An Introductory High School Honors Physics Course As Measured By The Force Concept Inventory, April Crawford Moore
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Of importance to many teachers is that students emerge from a course of study with an acceptable level of comprehension of the subject matter presented and that students' course grades reflect that understanding. The primary question of this research was, "How effective in promoting comprehension of Newtonian concepts is this teacher's use of selected interactive strategies?" Secondary questions were: 1. What modifications to instruction, if any, have to be made for implementation of interactive-engagement strategies? 2. Following instruction in mechanics, which misconceptions probed by the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) are retained by students, and which misconceptions are corrected? 3. How …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 18, Issue 01, published in 2001. The theme of this issue is Appalachian Rivers, Lakes, & Streams. This issue examines the central role of waterways in Appalachian environmental, economic, and cultural life, addressing both their vulnerability and vitality. Through articles on regional water shortages, aquaculture-based science education, and industrial heritage initiatives such as Southwest Pennsylvania's Rivers of Steel, it highlights tensions between development, resource management, and sustainability. Essays, fiction, poetry, and reviews further reflect on memory, labor, recreation, and loss connected to rivers and streams, presenting water as both a life-sustaining resource …
Aquatic Plants Of Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer, Robert B. Kaul
Aquatic Plants Of Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer, Robert B. Kaul
University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information
More than 100 species of aquatic plants grow in Nebraska. Some are entirely submersed for their whole lives, others produce floating leaves and flowers, and still others stand upright, with only their lower stems in water. Examples of these are shown here in this publication.
Vigorous and diverse colonies of aquatic plants are usually a sign of healthy and stable aquatic environments. In fact, the plants themselves stabilize the shorelines, underwater soils, and water chemistry. Waters rich with aquatic plants are rich with aquatic animals and waterfowl, which find cover, breeding habitat, and abundant food. Non-alkaline waters have more aquatic …

Something To Sneeze At: Nebraska's Airborne Pollen, Margaret R. Bolick
University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information
For those of us whose noses know (and don't like) pollen, late October is a time for celebration in Nebraska because it is the end of the hay fever season. When one's nose is a sensitive bio-detector of the presence of pollen, one's brain usually appreciates putting a name to whatever is causing the itchy eyes and runny nose. The job of putting names on the types of pollen in the air has been done by a dedicated team of pollen counters in the Division of Botany, University of Nebraska State Museum. This group, led by Curator Peg Bolick, has …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 18, Issue 02, published in 2001. The theme of this issue is Always a Love Story: Fiction from the Appalachian Mountains. This issue centers on Appalachian fiction as an expression of love. Love of place, family, memory, and even the tensions that compel departure. Through interviews with contemporary writers, reflections on literary truth-telling in the anthracite region, and award-winning short fiction, it explores how authors resist stereotype while portraying complex attachments to the mountains. Essays, poetry, and reviews further emphasize the enduring emotional landscape of Appalachian storytelling, presenting regional literature as both …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 18, Issue 03, published in 2001. The theme of this issue is Conserving and Developing Appalachia's Natural Resources. This issue examines the ongoing tension between economic development and environmental stewardship in Appalachia's resource-based industries. Through articles on native plant entrepreneurship, federal energy policy, mountaintop removal mining, post-industrial land recovery, and state park systems, it explores competing visions of prosperity, sustainability, and ecological responsibility. Essays, fiction, poetry, and reviews further reflect on personal and collective reckonings with land use, memory, and inheritance, presenting the region's natural landscape as both a source of livelihood …

Scholarship Unbound: Assessing Service As Scholarship In Promotion And Tenure Decisions, Kerryann O’Meara
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
Scholars of higher education have long recognized that existing reward systems and structures in academic communities do not weight faculty professional service as they do teaching and research. This paper examines how four colleges and universities with exemplary programs for assessing service as scholarship implemented these policies within colleges of education. Case studies suggest that policies to assess service as scholarship can increase consistency among an institution’s service mission, faculty workload, and reward system; expand faculty’s views of scholarship; boost faculty satisfaction; and strengthen the quality of an institution’s service culture.

Retention is an important area of concern for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). This project involves devising initiatives to identify and retain students with a high potential for academic success as outlined in the Strategic Plan for the Future of Virginia Commonwealth University, Phase II. It is theorized that by concentrating efforts on students (both in-state and out-of-state) with a cummulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, an improvement in the six-year graduation and freshmen retention rates can be realized. This would serve to enhance VCU’s status in the academic community (moving from Tier 3 to Tier 2 status) since twenty percent …

Involvement in community partnerships at Virginia Commonwealth University has its roots in the institution's history. The Medical College of Virginia, founded in1838, and the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, both sought to extend knowledge into the community to change peoples' lives for the better. Today, the VCU campuses are even more entwined with the City of Richmond -- physically, and increasingly so as a partner in the economic and social challenges and opportunities facing the City.

The purpose of this project is to develop a plan for expanding and funding the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute (GEHLI). Currently, teams of leadership scholars selected from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) develop projects relating to the academic community in addition to studying the dynamics of effective leadership. Consistent with VCU's vision of partnering with and service to metropolitan Richmond, we propose that future teams of leadership scholars develop outreach projects that involve and benefit the local community. The training in which scholars would participate would include learning about the Richmond community, its needs and goals, as well as the …

Taking It Personally: The Role Of Memoirs In Teacher Education, Sharon A. Hollander
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
The current popularity of memoirs and book groups is a cue to education faculty. When complemented by discussion groups and writing assignments, memoirs can be used to facilitate the process of inclusion in the schools by teaching both general and special educators about children with disabilities and their families. These works can also promote quality reading and writing, inspire original and insightful responses from students, and foster a sense of community in class. Some advantages and previous applications of this method are described and recommendations for implementation are made.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
Welcome to the fifth edition of the Electronic Journal of Inclusive Education. With this edition the conversation concerning the inclusion of student with special needs in regular education classroom continues with a number of scholarly articles.
The edition begins with Kathy Adam's discussion of inclusive practice for students from urban and low socio-economic backgrounds. These students are often wounded in the high stakes results of poor proficiency test scores. Ms. Adams provides insight concerning inclusive decisions for these children.
Dr. Mary Ellen Bargerhuff provides a qualitative look at the necessity of strong leadership when implementing inclusive practice. Her research reveals …

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
In a special education program, working with paraprofessionals can be either an asset or a nightmare of tension and conflicting role expectations. As a supervisor of student teachers, the complaint that is heard most often is the difficulty establishing a smooth, coherent working relationship with paraprofessionals in the classroom. Often many school districts do not adequately define the roles and expectations for paraprofessionals and do not provide training and preparation for this position. The purpose of this text is to provide a format and structure for creating just such a working relationship.
