Creating A New University Through Object Oriented Enterprise Modeling: A Study Of Communications Knowledge Management & Distributed Cognition, Armando A. Arias Jr., Beryl L. Bellman
SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations
Enterprise based object oriented (OO) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) modeling makes it possible to build the needed visual environments to organize people, technologies and activities (Arias, 1999d). In our modeling approach, the focus is on "things and relationships between things" described in commonly used terms. The modeling software bridges the so-called "semantic gap" between the people and the computer language (Booch, Rumbaugh & Jacobson, 1999). An object can be a product, a process, a person, a team, a company, an application or the inter-relationship between other objects. Objects can be pictured on the screen as maps formed by personalized …

Reform Of Preservice Science Education: An Example From A State-Supported University, R. Adams, G. L. Stringer
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The ongoing movement to reform the teaching and learning of mathematics and science began as an effort targeting grades K-12. This movement, however, also has significant implications for institutions of higher education, especially in the area of teacher preparation. Northeast Louisiana University has utilized an extensive system of support, including vital National Science Foundation funding, to redesign its science curriculum for elementary education majors. Four courses featuring the content areas of biology, chemistry, geosciences, and physics and integrated with respect to content and methodology were collaboratively developed by education and science faculty. and were approved as requirements for all preservice …

A Summer Academy Program For Prospective Teachers: Model Teaching Experiences, M. Neathery
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This article describes the project, A Summer Academy Program for Prospective Teachers: Model Teaching Experiences, of the Oklahoma Teacher Education Collaborative (O-TEC), one of the nation’s Collaboratives for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (CETP). To recruit highly qualified teachers in science and mathematics, O-TEC institutions promote a program of summer academies that provide prospective teachers with opportunities to become familiar with effective teaching methods. During the academy, high school juniors and seniors explore inquiry-based teaching strategies, exemplary curricula, science and math content, and state and national standards in math and science education-all under the tutelage of mentor teachers, a Master-Teacher-in- Residence, …

Educational Research Abstracts, G. Bass Jr.
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Editors' Note: As noted in previous issues of the Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations, the purpose of this Educational Research Abstract section is to present current published research on issues relevant to math and science teaching at both the K-12 and college levels. Because educational research articles are published in so many different academic journals, it is a rare public school teacher or college professor who reads all the recent published reports on a particular instructional technique or curricular advancement. Indeed, the uniqueness of various pedagogical strategies has been tacitly acknowledged by the creation of individual journals dedicated …
Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Ronald Lee, William J. Seiler
Protecting Communication Departments: Reflections On The Nebraska Experience, Ronald Lee, William J. Seiler
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Eight years ago, in the first week of the 1991 fall semester, the Acting Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs announced a series of vertical budget cuts that included the elimination of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s department of Speech Communication (now Communication Studies). Over the next seven months the department fought against the proposed action. In March 1992, the Budget Reduction Review Committee voted against the Vice Chancellor’s recommendation. Later in the month, the Academic Planning Committee also voted to rescind the budget cutting measure.
These actions ended the battle and assured the continuation of the department. In an earlier …

The Times, They Are A Changing: A Review Of Raising Children In A Socially Toxic Environment, Susan M. Sheridan, Richard J. Cowan, Tanya Meegan
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Rarely does a book come along that we believe to be essential reading for all psychologists, educators, child care workers, physicians, clergy, and concerned community members. Garbarino’s Raising Children in a Socially Toxic Environment is one such book. In this book, Garbarino sets out to offer his views on what childhood ought to be, how children map their own worlds (thus define, themselves), what their basic needs are, the levels in which those needs are being met, as well as offer suggestions for ways in which readers can change the “toxic environment” to aid in the healthy development of children …
Alcohol Use Among A Sample Of Thai Adolescents, Ian Newman, Saranya Innadda
Alcohol Use Among A Sample Of Thai Adolescents, Ian Newman, Saranya Innadda
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Beverage alcohol use is common in almost all societies and has been for thousands of years. Societies that use alcohol have rituals and traditions that tend to regulate alcohol's negative effects and enhance its pleasurable effects. Modern alcohol production and marketing methods have tended to break down these traditional controls and encourage irresponsible use. In many western countries, irresponsible use of alcohol is associated with crime, violence, and disease. In particular, for adolescents, alcohol use is linked to automobile crashes, injuries, and deaths. Alcohol use is associated with so many deaths and injuries that most western countries now consider alcohol …

Short-Term Memory For Nonsense Strings In Children With Reading Disabilities, Linda K. Lane
Short-Term Memory For Nonsense Strings In Children With Reading Disabilities, Linda K. Lane
Theses : Honours
A large body of evidence exists that demonstrates strong correlations between reading ability, phonological awareness and memory. The current study was designed to compare the performance of 24 10-year-old students with reading disabilities and a group of 24 8-year-old average readers, who were matched according to reading age. These students were given a decoding task requiring the recall of nonsense strings. This task was designed to measure working memory for phonological elements. An ANOVA yielded a significant main effect for group in favour of the older students, and a main effect for total errors and vowel and space location. Participants …
The Effects Of Nationality And Educational Background On World Music Preference Of A Sample Of Expatriate Students In Singapore, Karen Ann Niedermeyer
The Effects Of Nationality And Educational Background On World Music Preference Of A Sample Of Expatriate Students In Singapore, Karen Ann Niedermeyer
Theses : Honours
The purpose of this study was to examine expatriate students' World music preferences and investigate the relationship between the number of years students have spent in international school education and their preferences for World music, and their ability to identify its origins. The researcher was of the view that two prime determinants probably influence World music preferences: a) the length of stay in an international school. b) positive cultural exposure in a harmonious, multi-cultural society. The research methodology used in examining the above determinants on World music preferences involved two separate tests, taken consecutively. Firstly, The World Music Preference Inventory …
Stories Of School : Perspectives Of The Low Literate Adult, Anne Shipway
Stories Of School : Perspectives Of The Low Literate Adult, Anne Shipway
Theses : Honours
This thesis explores the school experiences of low literate adults through their perspective recognising that the 'voice' of the low literate adult is absent from the arena of adult literacy research. Stories are co-constructed by the participant and the researcher with particular emphasis on mai1uaining the voice of the research participant. Through this thesis I argue that the inclusion of the low literate adults perspective is an essential element in gaining a deeper understanding of themes and issues which impact on literacy attainment.

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter
Each morning I wound my way up the steep hill along the deeply rutted dirt path, exchanging daily "maaa's" with five bleating sheep and shouting out, "¡Hola!" in response to the children who gleefully identified me as "¡Gringa!" Women and children, colorful bowls of cooked maize balanced atop their heads, sauntered to and from Maria Elena's where their maize would be ground; at home the dough would be shaped and flattened into tortillas, the mainstay of every meal in the small Guatemalan village of San Juan.
