Critical Multiculturalism And The Globalization Of Capital: Some Implications For A Politics Of Resistance, Peter Mclaren, Ramin Farahmandpur Jan 1999

Critical Multiculturalism And The Globalization Of Capital: Some Implications For A Politics Of Resistance, Peter Mclaren, Ramin Farahmandpur

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"Despite the historic defeat of Marxism and constant attempts by so-called progressive educators to exorcize any residual Marxist discourse from the literature on multiculturalism, the contradictions of capital playing themselves out in the theater of contemporary social relations are beckoning Marx's spectre to return and further trouble those theories proclaiming that the "end of ideology" is upon us and that all we need to do in order to rescue humanity is to heed the clarion call of diversity. Too often overlooked in the debates over multiculturalism at present engulfing the academy are the myriad ways in which globalization is shaping …

Snapshots Of Success: Examples Of Imsa Graduates In The Arts & Humanities, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Examples of Student Diversity

We are very proud of the arts and humanities programs at IMSA. Our faculty and students have distinguished themselves in countless ways and in our Longitudinal Study of IMSA graduates, our alumni often cite arts and humanities learning experiences as among their most valuable and cherished experiences at IMSA.

From IMSA's perspective, the arts and humanities serve as a unique structure for the integration of knowledge among disciplines and provide students with a set of cultural and ethical perspectives that frame understanding of mathematics and science. We believe that the integration of disciplines, if done so in a meaningful and …

1998-99 Annual Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Jan 1999

1998-99 Annual Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

For far too long, too many educational environments have been schooling environments focused on teacher- delivered and student-received information rather than learning environments focused on teacher- facilitated and student-generated knowledge. This must change. Young people are capable of extraordinary achievements and significant contributions, and it is the responsibility of educators, parents, taxpayers, policymakers and the business community to provide learning environments that make this possible. With your continuing support, IMSA will work continuously, diligently and resolutely to model and help others become such a learning environment.

Doing Academic Work, Stephen Matthias Harney, Frederick Moten Jan 1999

Doing Academic Work, Stephen Matthias Harney, Frederick Moten

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

When professors get together outside the university they talk about that thing which dominates them, their work. This conversation may take the form of discussing a product of that work-a lecture in class, a research paper, committee deliberations-but most often it seems to be about conditions of work. One hears talk about course load, the trials of tenure and promotion, salaries and compensation, and of course the quality of the students on which some of academic labor is supposed to fall. In themselves, these conversations are not surprising. Mail carriers have very similar conversations, as do primary school teachers, subway …

Dimensions Of Roles, Responsibilities, Training Background And Needs, Policies, And Procedures For Paraeducators Dealing With Students With Special Needs, Beverly Anne Plagge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of this research study was to delineate and synthesize the roles, responsibilities, skill level, and training background and needs of paraeducators working with students with special needs from a state that requires paraeducator certification and a state that does not require paraeducator certification. The five core areas of roles and responsibilities were: (a) instructional support, (b) behavior management, (c) diagnostic support, (d) classroom organization, and (e) personal care assistance from the special education paraeducator and the special education teacher who teams with the paraeducator. Very few differences existed between what paraeducators and their teachers felt were appropriate and …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

American society is changing. Consequently, public schools are being called to change as well. Previous reform efforts have failed to bring about substantive change and improvement. What role does leadership, school size, and socioeconomic levels play in developing school culture?

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of leadership, school size, and socioeconomic level to school culture utilizing the Competing Values Framework. The Competing Values Framework provided four ideal culture types and eight leadership roles. Culture types included group, developmental, rational …

Making Sense Of The At-Risk Phenomenon, Karri Elizabeth Beath Jan 1999

Making Sense Of The At-Risk Phenomenon, Karri Elizabeth Beath

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this qualitative study is to help in making sense of the at-risk phenomenon. The implications throughout this study are based on the constructivist paradigm in that we create things such as at-risk and not discover them, therefore, allowing us to change the way things are. The data collected throughout this study developed into four main contradictions. The first contradiction, We Can't Define At-Risk, but Treat It Like a Thing, presents a variety of definitions of at-risk which represent the inability to define such an ambiguous term. The second contradiction, Moving Towards Inclusion During the Creation of Another …

Participants completed a questionnaire packet which consisted of a written informed consent form, a background questionnaire, the CSWQ, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Beck …

Are We Going To Cyberspace, Or Is This Just Another Trip To Abilene?, William K. Jackson Jan 1999

Are We Going To Cyberspace, Or Is This Just Another Trip To Abilene?, William K. Jackson

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

The costs of technology are high, and the options for its use are varied. In order to avoid arriving at a technological Abilene, we must continually ask and answer the question "what ought we do with technology?" and not "what can we do with technology?" Purpose must lead deployment. Otherwise, we risk expending great efforts and scarce resources to produce the educational equivalent of "Thank you for calling, press 1 if you. . ."

Honors Programs At Smaller Colleges, Samuel Schuman Jan 1999

Honors Programs At Smaller Colleges, Samuel Schuman

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

This little pamphlet first appeared in 1988 which, from the perspective of American higher education, is either just yesterday or eons ago. At the end of the '80s, in that First Edition, it was still possible to suggest that a fully-equipped Honors office space should have "a computer or typewriter," a suggestion which today sounds more appropriate for a museum of antique office machinery than an up-to-date operation. On the other hand, some of the same questions about access and elitism which troubled us over a decade ago continue to be contemporary concerns. This revision, like most, seeks to preserve …

Developing A Vibrant Model For Improving The Quality Of Elementary Education In Pakistan, Muhammad Memon Jan 1999

Developing A Vibrant Model For Improving The Quality Of Elementary Education In Pakistan, Muhammad Memon

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

The public education system of Pakistan mostly offers children a prescriptive catalogue of knowledge what Freire (1972) calls it a 'banking concept' in education. Hawes and Stephens (1990) argue that today's schools and children are invariably the victim of yesterday's system. During the last three decades, the quality of education has become a serious concern among the policy makers and donor agencies. In general terms, quality is defined in term of efficiency in achieving the desired students learning outcomes predetermined in the policies. In Pakistan, three types of education reforms namely efficiency; quality; curricularbased (Riddell, 1998) were launched but these …

What Is Critical Literacy?, Ira Shor Jan 1999

What Is Critical Literacy?, Ira Shor

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

We are what we say and do. The way we speak and are spoken to help shape us into the people we become. Through words and other actions, we build ourselves in a world that is building us. That world addresses us to produce the different identities we carry forward in life: men are addressed differently than are women, people of color differently than whites, elite students differently than those from working families. Yet, though language is fateful in teaching us what kind of people to become and what kind of society to make, discourse is not destiny. We can …
