The Effects Of A Study Strategies Course On College Students' Academic Performance, Melanie L. Mccalley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was undertaken to determine whether the completion of a study strategies course had an effect on college students' grade point averages and attrition rate. The 50 experimental subjects were freshmen students at the University of Northern Iowa enrolled (during the fall semester of 1985) in "Effective Study Strategies", a non-credit six-week course offered by the Office of Learning and Instruction. A comparison group of 50 freshmen students, also from fall semester, 1985, and who did not take the study strategies course, were matched to each of the 50 experimental students on the basis of gender, ACT composite scores, …

The Rhetoric And Reality Of Teacher Education: Towards A Praxis Model, John Smith Jan 1985

The Rhetoric And Reality Of Teacher Education: Towards A Praxis Model, John Smith

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The preparation of teachers has unfortunately been characterised by a distinction between the theory and practice of educating. Historical antecedents such as the justifiable move away from teacher training approaches have resulted in a de-emphasis of practice. The preparation of teachers has become an academic study at the expense of teaching experience. Current models of teacher preparation are, as a result, discipline oriented rather than practice-referenced. It is argued in this paper that there are some difficulties in operationalising such models; in fact, it is argued that the rhetoric sustaining such models is not at all a portrayal of the …

Management, Organisations And Effectiveness: A Literature Review Of This Area With An Emphasis On Schools And Educational Institutions, Michael W. Small Jan 1985

Management, Organisations And Effectiveness: A Literature Review Of This Area With An Emphasis On Schools And Educational Institutions, Michael W. Small

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Identifying and measuring the concept of effectiveness in an organisational setting has been a major concern for many years. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the more recent research literature on the topic of organisational effectiveness, and to present some of the current ways that have been tried in an endeavour to measure this idea. Many researchers have tried to define what "organisational effectiveness" means, but while they have stated that they know "effectiveness" when they see it, they cannot really provide an adequate definition of the term. One of the difficulties, according to Cameron and …

Research And Reconstruction In Teacher Education - Editorial Introduction, Tony Fielding Jan 1985

Research And Reconstruction In Teacher Education - Editorial Introduction, Tony Fielding

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In 1983 this Journal published a paper outlining a model of teacher development (Fielding, 1983). The model employed concepts drawn from personal Construct Psychology (Kelly, 1955). Kellyian concepts were chosen because it was thought they affirmed the model's basic assumption that human experience may be and frequently is both non-deterministic in character and non-functionalist in its outcomes for individuals.

Teacher Curriculum: A Failed Paradigm Of Practise And Proceedure, D. M. Cavanagh Jan 1985

Teacher Curriculum: A Failed Paradigm Of Practise And Proceedure, D. M. Cavanagh

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

An examination of recent literature concerning teacher training suggests that in many parts of the western world it is constantly under review. Major Reports (Martin: 1964; Bell: 1971;James: 1972; The Senate: 1972; Williams: 1979; Coffey: 1980; Auchmuty: 1980) and the popular press have written and continue to write about various aspects of the teachers life. Some of these are anlyses of what is the case, others are about what could be the case whilst others dwell on the shortcomings of the teaching profession. The U.K. for example has its infamous Black Papers whilst in Australia the same concepts concerning standards …

A Comparison Of The Career Assessment Inventory And The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory In A Minority, High School Drop-Out Sample, David Stanton Halferty

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII), an inventory with some validity, was directed at the professionally oriented client. The Career Assessment Inventory (CAI) appeared in 1976 as an inventory normed on the non-professional, blue-collar worker, directed at the non-baccalaureate student. There had been little research on minority, non-college oriented youth. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the predictive and concurrent validity of these two inventories for a drop-out, non-college oriented population. These inventories were compared for predictive validity to short-term occupational outcome, and for concurrent validity to Expressed Interest. Also, the distribution of interests across the six …

Obesity Of Mentally Retarded Individuals: Prevalence, Characteristics, And Intervention, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Robert A. Fox, Anthony F. Rotatori Jan 1985

Obesity Of Mentally Retarded Individuals: Prevalence, Characteristics, And Intervention, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Robert A. Fox, Anthony F. Rotatori

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Research on the prevalence, characteristics, and treatment of obesity of mentally retarded individuals within the context of research findings with the obese nonretarded population was selectively reviewed. According to the available literature, obesity is a prevalent problem in the retarded population, and there is a greater incidence among females than males. The literature also suggests that obese retarded subjects as a group can be distinguished from their nonobese peers by their physical condition, but not by their eating style or personality characteristics. Behavioral self-control strategies have been found to be effective in producing weight loss in obese retarded children and …

Social Environment As Related To School Achievement In Early Childhood, Ida W. Goldwire Jan 1985

Social Environment As Related To School Achievement In Early Childhood, Ida W. Goldwire

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social environment as related to school achievement was investigated. It was found that the importance of the model which the parent sets for the child in addition to the role assumed by the teacher play an important part in the development of the early childhood student. The environment in which a child lives and the person with whom the child interacts both affect the child in complex ways to influence the child's development and life chances. Research also shows that academic and intellectual gains are produced during the Head Start program year and that children who attend Head Start programs …

Mobility As An Element Of Learning Styles: The Effect Its Inclusion Or Exculsion Has On Student Performance In The Standardized Testing Environment, Linda Miller

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mobility and the standardized testing environment. The project focused on nine students who had a pronounced need for movement while learning and/or being tested. The study was conducted to determine whether the achievement scores of these nine students would be influenced by the denial or availability of movement while they were administered a standardized reading test. Twenty-one second grade students were the subjects. Two forms of Level B of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test were used. All subjects were tested in a traditional environment with no movement allowed. The same …

Changing Negative Attitudes Of Elementary Children Toward The Aged Through Positive Interaction And Aging Education Within The School Curriculum, Mary Emily King Jan 1985

Changing Negative Attitudes Of Elementary Children Toward The Aged Through Positive Interaction And Aging Education Within The School Curriculum, Mary Emily King

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Children develop attitudes at an early age, both positive and negative. Negative attitudes toward the aged can be changed through direct contact between the elderly and through aging education within the curriculum. Children have negative attitudes toward the elderly and the aging process. Direct contact can change these views by providing interaction between children and the elderly while aging education can bring about an awareness of the aging process and of the aged. With aging being an inevitable and important part of being human, it is necessary as well as important for educators to help children develop positive attitudes toward …

Technology And Its Implications For Early Childhood Educators: Considering The Microcomputer In The Kindergarten, Linda Lasalle Campbell Jan 1985

Technology And Its Implications For Early Childhood Educators: Considering The Microcomputer In The Kindergarten, Linda Lasalle Campbell

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Kindergarten teachers can effectively and sensitively integrate the microcomputer into a curriculum which strives to meet the needs of the total child. This study indicates, through a review of professional journals and current books on the microcomputer in education, the need for technological skills. It demonstrates the presence of microcomputers in today's schools, even in the early years. Uses of the microcomputer in the kindergarten classroom are presented for consideration. Recommendations are included which call for informed and caring teachers to use the microcomputer to meet the social, emotional, and cognitive needs of the individual child.
