The Rhetoric And Reality Of Teacher Education: Towards A Praxis Model, John Smith
The Rhetoric And Reality Of Teacher Education: Towards A Praxis Model, John Smith
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The preparation of teachers has unfortunately been characterised by a distinction between the theory and practice of educating. Historical antecedents such as the justifiable move away from teacher training approaches have resulted in a de-emphasis of practice. The preparation of teachers has become an academic study at the expense of teaching experience. Current models of teacher preparation are, as a result, discipline oriented rather than practice-referenced. It is argued in this paper that there are some difficulties in operationalising such models; in fact, it is argued that the rhetoric sustaining such models is not at all a portrayal of the …
Management, Organisations And Effectiveness: A Literature Review Of This Area With An Emphasis On Schools And Educational Institutions, Michael W. Small
Management, Organisations And Effectiveness: A Literature Review Of This Area With An Emphasis On Schools And Educational Institutions, Michael W. Small
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Identifying and measuring the concept of effectiveness in an organisational setting has been a major concern for many years. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the more recent research literature on the topic of organisational effectiveness, and to present some of the current ways that have been tried in an endeavour to measure this idea. Many researchers have tried to define what "organisational effectiveness" means, but while they have stated that they know "effectiveness" when they see it, they cannot really provide an adequate definition of the term. One of the difficulties, according to Cameron and …
Research And Reconstruction In Teacher Education - Editorial Introduction, Tony Fielding
Research And Reconstruction In Teacher Education - Editorial Introduction, Tony Fielding
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In 1983 this Journal published a paper outlining a model of teacher development (Fielding, 1983). The model employed concepts drawn from personal Construct Psychology (Kelly, 1955). Kellyian concepts were chosen because it was thought they affirmed the model's basic assumption that human experience may be and frequently is both non-deterministic in character and non-functionalist in its outcomes for individuals.
Teacher Curriculum: A Failed Paradigm Of Practise And Proceedure, D. M. Cavanagh
Teacher Curriculum: A Failed Paradigm Of Practise And Proceedure, D. M. Cavanagh
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
An examination of recent literature concerning teacher training suggests that in many parts of the western world it is constantly under review. Major Reports (Martin: 1964; Bell: 1971;James: 1972; The Senate: 1972; Williams: 1979; Coffey: 1980; Auchmuty: 1980) and the popular press have written and continue to write about various aspects of the teachers life. Some of these are anlyses of what is the case, others are about what could be the case whilst others dwell on the shortcomings of the teaching profession. The U.K. for example has its infamous Black Papers whilst in Australia the same concepts concerning standards …

Understanding the culture of other nations contributes to the development of responsible citizens in a democratic society. A classroom teaching team proved these activities to be successful. Five initial lessons introduce students to the study of China by teaching Chinese geography. To enhance cultural understanding; 10 additional lessons focus on the following aspects of Chinese culture: (1) flags; (2) agriculture; (3) calligraphy; (4) calendar; (5) inventions; (6) karate; (7) tangrams; (8) crafts; (9) folk tales; and (10) Confucius. Obesity Of Mentally Retarded Individuals: Prevalence, Characteristics, And Intervention, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Robert A. Fox, Anthony F. Rotatori
Obesity Of Mentally Retarded Individuals: Prevalence, Characteristics, And Intervention, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Robert A. Fox, Anthony F. Rotatori
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Research on the prevalence, characteristics, and treatment of obesity of mentally retarded individuals within the context of research findings with the obese nonretarded population was selectively reviewed. According to the available literature, obesity is a prevalent problem in the retarded population, and there is a greater incidence among females than males. The literature also suggests that obese retarded subjects as a group can be distinguished from their nonobese peers by their physical condition, but not by their eating style or personality characteristics. Behavioral self-control strategies have been found to be effective in producing weight loss in obese retarded children and …
Reflection Upon The Intangible Process Of Professional Development In A Graduate Program In Counseling Psychology, Judy Iris Fletcher, Mary Randa Kapp
Reflection Upon The Intangible Process Of Professional Development In A Graduate Program In Counseling Psychology, Judy Iris Fletcher, Mary Randa Kapp
Theses
The following narrative is a personal account of the experiences, observations, and awarenesses of two students completing their Masters degrees in counseling psychology. It represents an effort to document what we view as an identifiable and stress-producing process of growth occurring within an academic framework. We feel that this duality of personal growth and professional development is inadequately addressed in graduate programs. Yet, we have found this unstated, underlying, and inevitable threat of uncertainty, risk, and change to be as predictable a reality as the theoretical coursework required.
This paper is written not so much to prove a point as …

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
In previous volumes, we have tried to include one of the keynote addresses from the annual conference. We are pleased this year to continue that tradition with Susanne and David Whitcomb's article, "The Kahuna as Professional and Organizational Development Specialist." In their session and the essay based upon it, the Whitcombs encourage us to step outside our familiar world and to see what other cultures have to teach us about our surroundings. Their analysis of the ancient Kahuna provides both specific and general hints for those of us concerned with identifying important values in our universities and colleges and establishing …

I teach literature-which also means teaching how to write critical, analytical papers. Until I developed the assignment that will be presented in this paper, I was almost defeated by the quality of writing that students assumed to be acceptable, expecially for their first essays in the course. The papers were disorganized and without a clear focus (or thesis); the writing style was grammatically poor and filled with vague, incoherent sentences and what passed as paragraphs; and there was no sense of evidence to support the statements being made. Since I had not initially established a common vocabulary for my expectations …

Parents' Day at St. Olaf College is like Parent's Day at any number of small colleges. School has been in session about a month. The leaves on the maples are starting to tum. In the distance, one can hear the pep band warming up for the football game, while in lounge or classroom, parents of freshmen and teachers of freshmen stand about holding coffee cups and making awkward conversation. Awkward, because they tend to talk past each other. Teachers try to keep the conversation light, offering general information about their courses. They don't know their freshmen well yet. The parents …

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
I often teach Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory, one of the courses economics majors are required to take. Macroeconomic theory is primarily directed to questions concerning inflation, employment, and economic growth. Currently, there are two professionally sanctioned "ways of thinking" about these issues-"Keynesian economics" and "monetarism".
Intermediate macroeconomics is of little value to our majors if they leave the course unable to "think like an economist". Accordingly, it is my principal objective in this course that, by the end of the semester, students be able to "do" both Keynesian economics and monetarism - that is, to think their way through concrete issues …

The Letter Writing Technique, Linda Mae Axelrod
The Letter Writing Technique, Linda Mae Axelrod
MA TESOL Collection
The thesis is designed to enable the teacher/practitioner to use the Letter Writing Technique as an adjunct to intensive ESL courses that equally stress the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The areas discussed include an overview of correction techniques, integration of the letters with other skills and integration of the letters with a variety of recent language teaching approaches. The issues of fluency versus accuracy and deductive versus inductive learning are also discussed. The paper stresses the "intrigue'' and naturalness of letters by the incorporation of letters to the Readers within the content of the paper. The …
