A Study For School Media Center Program Improvement, Glen W. Jordan Jan 1985

A Study For School Media Center Program Improvement, Glen W. Jordan

Graduate Research Papers

The school library-media specialist holds an interesting position. They are not usually classroom teachers, but they are involved in the educational process. They select, purchase, catalog, and provide access to a great many materials in book form as well as in audiovisual and computer format. It is this material and its usage that puts the library-media specialist in such a unique and interesting position within the context of a school's educational program.

A Content Analysis Of Books Depicting Adopted Teenagers In Adolescent Novels Published Between 1965-1981, Myrna Griffith

Graduate Research Papers

Since .adolescents can find answers to their questions by reading fiction, fiction that portrays teenagers like themselves, adolescent books on the subject of adoption may serve as a source of current information on adoption and society's attitudes of searching. This researcher proposed that an annotated bibliography be developed in this study. The technique of content analysis was used and young adult fiction titles were selected which might enable the young adult readers to determine if they can find answers to some of their questions about their birth parents and whether to search for them.

The Relationship Between High School Curriculum And Collegiate Academic Success, Nancy Bramhall Jan 1985

The Relationship Between High School Curriculum And Collegiate Academic Success, Nancy Bramhall

Graduate Research Papers

Newspapers and magazines have bombarded the American public in recent years with reports that national test scores on the American College Test (ACT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) were steadily dropping. Many people believe this drop in scores meant the quality of education was declining. Are the educational standards of our high schools lower today than they were twenty years ago? If so, what are the ramifications for our colleges and universities? The Advisory Panel on the SAT Score Decline stated, "There is a clearly observable evidence of diminished seriousness of purpose and attention to mastery of skills and …

The Teaching Of Student Responsibility, Respect For Self, Others And Property, Mark Douglas Farland Jan 1985

The Teaching Of Student Responsibility, Respect For Self, Others And Property, Mark Douglas Farland

Graduate Research Papers

One of the district-wide goals of the Cedar Falls Community School District during the 1980-81 school year was to "emphasize the importance of teaching student responsibility, respect for self, others and property." The writer was appointed to a district-wide committee charged with the responsibility for identifying a program to achieve that goal. For students, educators, and society the importance of the goal is unchallenged. While much has been written on the topics of student responsibility and student respect, the terms have a vagueness and complexity which seemed to the writer to warrant additional research.

Black And White Students' Test Scores: Factors Leading To Decreasing Discrepancies, Diane Anita Fortenberry Jan 1985

Black And White Students' Test Scores: Factors Leading To Decreasing Discrepancies, Diane Anita Fortenberry

Graduate Research Papers

What exists when there are two lines approaching one another, but fail to join in order to form one line? -- a gap. There has been a mysterious proliferation of gaps in recent years. For instance, there's the generation gap. That's where a wide area of misunderstanding exists between the young and the old. Then there is the communication gap. That is not being able to effectively relate to another. But what of the testing gap? More specifically the chasm that exists between test scores of black and white students. Throughout the years it can be said that this gap …

Liberal Education And Moral Development: An Integrated Model Of Moral Education, Roderic Lewis Owen Jan 1985

Liberal Education And Moral Development: An Integrated Model Of Moral Education, Roderic Lewis Owen

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Two central questions are raised: at a college level, what should be our educational goals and methods in the realm of moral development? and, what curricular or instructional model is most logically consistent and ethically acceptable with the mission and philosophy of liberal education? The major purpose of this study is to answer these questions and develop one reasonable, clearly defined model of college-level moral education.;As a normative inquiry into the goals of moral education, this philosophical study rests on the assumption that statements of moral value can be rationally understood and taught and is guided by an awareness of …

Foreign Demand For United States Higher Education: A Study Of Developing Countries In The Eastern Hemisphere, Vinod B. Agarwal, Donald R. Winkler

Economics Faculty Publications

(First Paragraph) Foreign student enrollments in the United States have increased rapidly over the past 25 years. The total number increased from 36,494 in 1954 to 336,990 in 1982. While foreign students still represent less than 2% of all higher education enrollments in the United States, this proportion is likely to grow over the next decade as enrollments of American citizens decline. One consequence of the growth to date has been that many colleges and universities depend on foreign students for an important part of their tuition revenue or enrollment-determined budget, and this dependence is also likely to grow over …

The Effects Of Teacher Behaviors On Students' Reading Strategies, Karla Rekers Ostby Jan 1985

The Effects Of Teacher Behaviors On Students' Reading Strategies, Karla Rekers Ostby

Graduate Research Papers

The reading achievement of school-age children has been a major issue in education for many years. Numerous articles have been written about declining reading achievement scores and the result has been a great deal of research focused on identifying effective instructional programs. Many basal reading programs have been written in an attempt to develop the "perfect" reading instruction program. However, as Bond and Dykstra (1967) concluded, the most important variable in reading instruction is not the reading program but the teacher.

Validity Studies Of The Leiter International Performance Scale For An International Middle School Population, Marvin E. Jones

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to investigate the construct and short-term predictive validity of the Leiter International Performance Scale (LIPS) for an international population of middle school students in an overseas school. The 141 subjects were 13, 14, and 15 year old students from many nations who came to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with their parents who were professionals, highly skilled technologists, and foreign embassy employees.

The sample represented 15 nations and was functionally divided into four groups: (Group A) Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States; (Group B) Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden; (Group …

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In previous volumes, we have tried to include one of the keynote addresses from the annual conference. We are pleased this year to continue that tradition with Susanne and David Whitcomb's article, "The Kahuna as Professional and Organizational Development Specialist." In their session and the essay based upon it, the Whitcombs encourage us to step outside our familiar world and to see what other cultures have to teach us about our surroundings. Their analysis of the ancient Kahuna provides both specific and general hints for those of us concerned with identifying important values in our universities and colleges and establishing …

One Sentence Is Worth A Thousand: A Strategy For Improving Reading, Writing, And Thinking Skills, Lois Cuddy

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

I teach literature-which also means teaching how to write critical, analytical papers. Until I developed the assignment that will be presented in this paper, I was almost defeated by the quality of writing that students assumed to be acceptable, expecially for their first essays in the course. The papers were disorganized and without a clear focus (or thesis); the writing style was grammatically poor and filled with vague, incoherent sentences and what passed as paragraphs; and there was no sense of evidence to support the statements being made. Since I had not initially established a common vocabulary for my expectations …

Parents' Day at St. Olaf College is like Parent's Day at any number of small colleges. School has been in session about a month. The leaves on the maples are starting to tum. In the distance, one can hear the pep band warming up for the football game, while in lounge or classroom, parents of freshmen and teachers of freshmen stand about holding coffee cups and making awkward conversation. Awkward, because they tend to talk past each other. Teachers try to keep the conversation light, offering general information about their courses. They don't know their freshmen well yet. The parents …

Group Problem-Solving Exercises: An Application In Economics, Yngve Ramstad Jan 1985

Group Problem-Solving Exercises: An Application In Economics, Yngve Ramstad

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

I often teach Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory, one of the courses economics majors are required to take. Macroeconomic theory is primarily directed to questions concerning inflation, employment, and economic growth. Currently, there are two professionally sanctioned "ways of thinking" about these issues-"Keynesian economics" and "monetarism".

Intermediate macroeconomics is of little value to our majors if they leave the course unable to "think like an economist". Accordingly, it is my principal objective in this course that, by the end of the semester, students be able to "do" both Keynesian economics and monetarism - that is, to think their way through concrete issues …
