We live in an environment where the success of many educational programs are directly proportional to the amount of external funds appropriated. When federal funding for a program dries up, unfortunately, the program may come to an end. This end is in sight for many of the Secondary Science Training Programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation throughout the nation. However, at the University of Iowa, the SSTP programs are i n t he process of expanding beyond a firm foundation.

Two high school students from Iowa have been selected by the 32nd Annual Science Talent Search. Craig J. Schaefer from Bettendorf and Gordon L. Waite from Maquoketa High School were the winners. Craig's award winning paper was Schlierenography: A Study in Applied Optics and Gordon’s was the Development of a Solar Observatory System.

The study assessed current adult education personnel needs in Iowa of people administering and teaching career supplementary courses by surveying 22 administrators; 228 coordinators; 39 teachers; and 662 students. The first phase of the study was the conducting of a workshop for administrators to assess personnel needs and provide programing experience. A needs assessment questionnaire was developed and mailed to workshop participants; the next phases consisted of surveying teachers and coordinators through the questionnaire. A shortened version of the final report of a Federally-funded developmental curriculum research project; the publication presents the findings of a workshop (University of Northern Iowa; 1973) for the purpose of identification of job tasks for entry-level office occupations from research-based materials. Studies by Lamb (Mary Lou); Lanham (Frank W.); and Perkins (Edward A.) were used by the workshop participants to identify job tasks for selected entry-level office occupations. For the past several years; much emphasis has been placed on open enrollment plans involving bussing that enable black and white students to attend schools together. The Laboratory School of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has been involved in such a program since 1968. As the project developed; the potential for very serious problems relating to racial tension and student frustration became evident. The special education training program at the University of Northern Iowa provides a systematically integrated program designed to develop professional personnel with the requisite competencies to (a) diagnose and teach; (b) organize and supervise programs; (c) evaluate instructional programs; and d) train professional educators to implement programs for children and youth manifesting retardation and behavioral; learning; and multiple handicaps. Traditional categories of special education have been de-emphasized; and a systems approach has been applied within a conceptual model to guide the integration of didactics with practicum activities. This study was undertaken to determine if a mass production project could be used as an effective method to acquaint third grade students with the world of work through practical experience and provide information about specialization of labor and industrial organization.
The literature reviewed included three areas concerning career education at the elementary school level: general education, industrial education, and guidance. The objectives of this study were (1) to reveal the status of career-vocational development practices taking place now in the junior high school science departments of Iowa, (2) to describe the type of career-vocational development experiences being offered to approximately 55% of Iowa pupils in grades 7, 8, and 9, and (3) to identify the amount of emphasis being placed upon career-vocational development education at these grade levels of the science curriculum.

The purpose of this study was to (1) determine how many institutions of higher learning (ones listed in the 1972-73 Industrial Teacher Education Directory) offer courses in elementary school industrial arts, (2) to examine the status and content of industrial arts for the elementary school courses offered by these institutions of higher learning for elementary teachers, (3) to determine if they have changed since the last comprehensive study, (4) to compare the content of elementary school industrial arts courses with these standards set up by a National Conference on Elementary School Industrial Arts and other specialists in the area.
